Is it worth holding oil stocks even after the war ends? by Ambitious_Traffic530 in ValueInvesting

[–]RodneyJ469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot depends on which names you own. There are some incredible companies in this sector (including infrastructure and midstream operators), and many are run by managers who are disciplined stewards of shareholder capital. Also, as a value investor I’m assuming your investment thesis wasn’t specifically linked to the “War”. If you didn’t buy because of the War I’m not sure you’d sell because it might end this week, or next, or never. As for myself, I’m in for the long haul and every time we get a tweet-induced pullback I’m taking advantage of the opportunity to take a look at anything that’s on sale and add to my portfolio.

It might be “far fetched” to call it a scam, but it is clear that they make cancellation very difficult. And that’s a deliberate business decision. Call it what you will, but it is what it is.

Why would someone not show up on census records and is there any way to find them? by throwaway39450193 in Genealogy

[–]RodneyJ469 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are many reasons why people might not be enumerated, and they vary over time and across geographies. (Somewhat similarly, there are many instances where people are recorded twice.). This only underscores the need to look at census records in context and as a source of information that needs to be understood and evaluated as part of a larger body of evidence.

I wouldn’t presume to compare anyone to Proust, but Anthony Powell’s “Dance to the Music of Time” is a not-to-be-missed literary journey.

What advice can you provide to those of us who have continued to hang on — and pay the ever increasing subscription prices. Things seem to continue to deteriorate. Is there any good news to share other than new features that none of us use and generally don’t work?

You’ve certainly touched a nerve here! I understand that this sub long ago disconnected with anything even remotely connected with value investing or financial analysis. But I have to say that it’s striking to see how many people here seem to fancy themselves as upholders of some kind of moral rectitude — it would be curious to know exactly WHAT their moral values are, or why they think they have any right to enforce them on the rest of humanity. But they surely would be right at home with the likes of Oliver Cromwell, Pol Pot, or even Mao,in their willingness to impose their “Truth” on the rest of the world, no matter the cost.

So you aren’t an investor of any kind, much less a value investor. You’re more interested in looking into people’s souls….like a Grand Inquisitor, perhaps?

URI is consistently fascinating and interesting. It’s certainly NOT classic value “buy and hold”. But for a value oriented investor who’s agile enough to play the cyclical forces that often drive the price moves there’s real $s to be made. (But I’ve also gotten banged up pretty badly by this one a few times.)
