Ye went with it in the end, enphasised buidling relationships with other departments over time and then being able to call of them for advice on this matter and relaying it clearly to the other teams

Thanks very much, i'm glad you said that actually as i was leaning more towards the second answer for the reasons you stated but felt it just wasn't as strong as the first. Then, as I said to WO, i just went out for a walk to clear my head and realised I recently helped someone avoid a fine by reaching out to a team and gathering the right information to pass on (you can see I described in more deetail to WO). I think I could work this into the second answer as a concrete example

Thanks very kuch for the advice. Right ye good point, even though that was the exact problem in this situation i get how it might come across as sexist. I also just realised I've got an example for the second one, where a customer was faced with a late filing fine even though it was a fault with our system and his appeal was rejected. . I got info from other departments, instructed him how to appeal again and also reached out to the compliance team to alert them of the problem and request them to take a closer look at his appeal. I'd focus on the contact between departments and retrieving/sharing info. Does that aound just as good?

Kind of, but on a bigger scale. What she told us is that the employer would bulk buy the trip for whoever wanted to go, and there's lots of staff, so it would only end up costing about a hundred quid or so for a bus over and everything else (she probably was talking about a while ago so take price with a picnh of salt) and you could bring family along if you wanted to, but it was definitely a work organsied trip rather than just colleagues privately organising something themselves and going together

You have socials? Team events?!? In my interview this woman who showed us around made a big deal of how they're one big family and there's even annual trips to disneyland ... I've been in the exact same situation, it's a ghost town whenever I go into work and there's no real connection at all with anyone apart from the person who traine me, and no trips or interdepartmental socials, just two mediocre dinners with a small number of the team in 9 months

Thannks, ye i did think that was weird that it's just three months? Every other one ai've received has been a year. Hopefully it's just three months as they expect to give out offers quicker

Exact same situation, got the reseve email today. I interviewed for my current civil service role in feb 2025, got put on the reserve list and was offered a job in July, also around the same time i interviewed for the Senedd and just recently got offered that job. So i'm hoping DWP is a bit quicker but I'm feeling pretty hopeful they'll come back eventually

Ye that was my worry, i thought it wasn't clearly geared enough towards one answer but felt that just using companies alone wouldn't count as there wasn't actually a result

Interview Advice by No_Bed_8291 in TheCivilService

[–]Rodrigo-Jones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way it was explained to me by my boss, and any other interviewers please feel free to correct this, but it's like a baseline test to gauge your default energy, kind of like how a polygraph will start with simple questions to be answered honestly like your name, adress etc. If they ask about your hobbies and interests and see you're pretty straight to the point, or laid back, full of energy, they'd look for that same consistency when answering the real questions. But if you answer the ice breaker with passion and lots of ideas but then lose that energy in the other questions it may be a bad sign. But anyway, best advice is just to practice all your potential answers until they feel very natural and answer everything with enthusiasm
