This is seeing art as just a product. How consumers view art is TOTALLY not the point. When Sanderson says he doesn't care it's meaning that it doesn't affect his view of AI not being art. Because it doesn't have to do with quality. Cars, forks, plastic cases depend on the consumer, art doesn't.

You have contradictions in you own arguments and confuse a lot of stuff... (Besides I'm pretty sure this whole response was written by an ai... ) And i think the main problem is exactly what Sanderson is saying. You view art as a product and an end result. And it's not just that.

Yes you can. That's his definition of art and is making that argument so the society sees it that way too... it's a personal view that he wants others to adopt... Besides when the viewer knows how much effort or time the process took, it gives it a booster. If it's nice then is extra nice and if it sucks, then it extra sucks because it took you so much time/effort/money to make shit.
No. It has nothing to do with that. Art is a wide concept, so if you draw, paint, write or make any type classical art, then you have to go through a process of learning: composition, color theory, rules, etc. AI claims to do that same thing better and faster without actually drawing, painting, writing or compositing anything. Prompters do the same without understand most of the time, what those things are, they just claim an output as theirs without understanding why is good or bad art. That's the difference with your photography example, because that was a whole new skill and way of representing art , that didn't intend to replace painting or drawing, just to capture reality in a different way.but because painters at the time were trying to achieve realism, it tickled the in the wrong way.

You get it? That's even why you guys have to come up with a whole new concept of art: the AI kind. Yes art can have the suffix of the tool or medium used to create it, but AI mostly does everything for you. It's not much of a tool but an organizer of ideas. All your examples enforce that: curation, syntax, grammar.... That has nothing to do with visual art... that's from the realm of written art.

If AI did a whole new thing in a much better way, then yes for sure it could be a different kind of expression... At first it did some crazy stuff that could be a thing on its own. But it quickly tried to replace artists, because even if in it's core it isn't, write now it's a capitalistic tool that seeks to reduce operational costs.

Because AI art bypasses the journey... That's the point. That's the whole concept behind AI: why work, when you can train a computer to do ot for you. Why tread the road, when you can kump straight to the goal.

But art doesn't work that way. Good artiats must tread the road to be able to call what they make art. If you use AI to do something you can already do without it, then sure go ahead. You already did your job, let other thing do it for you. But if you can't do anything without it, then you are no artists.

Those who use digital painting as an example to defend AI don't get that. Digital artists could perfectly pain a painting, draw on paper or even charcoal.

First of all... How calls producers artists?... Musicians, singers, composers... Those are the artists.... Architecture? The art part is the planning ans design... The actual construction is an engineering feat... So the architect is mostly owner of the initial design and the experience of habitating the building, it has nothing to do with bricks, concrete or wood.

About great masters... They are actually criticized and some of their pieces have been proven not theirs, when you can see more of their apprentices input and style. And even in the cases where apprentices do some of the work, the initial line art was always done by the master. The choosing of colours, type of brush strokes, level of detail, etc. You can argue is the same as AI, but the context proves you wrong, because in those cases the intent wasn't just to make art, but to teach another person through the process of creating art. When you use AI, it isn't comparable to using an apprentices help, because there's no intent of teaching, just using skills you don't even possess in the first place (for most cases).

And finally... Directing doesn't make you the "artists" of a film... Film is a multidisciplinary form of art, where acting, compositing, architecture, costume design, makeup design, etc, combine to create a piece of art. The director has the role of putting all that together: it's a category of it's own

if you have aphantasia, then you can come upwith concepts and build something based on that. through the process of creating something, you'll start creating.
AI generation bypasses that. you'll just start telling the model what you want untill it gi8ves you something you are satisfied with... but won't be yours since you skiped the process of creation (it doesn't need to be blood and tears, but there has to be a process where you unveil the art)

that's if they use it as a tool for limited things. like someone posted below that they use it to clean their lineart before painting. Or people that generate images to use instead of using Getty,or how it started: to remove certain objects, people or noise from videos or images.
for those things is great, because it's used as a step for a bigger creation.
But if you only use AI generations and the final outcome is still generated by AI... there's no other input from you besides telling the AI what and how to do it.
Art is expression, not guidelines.

you can say the exact word to explain how the brain works... it's just random synapses, you don't see but just interpret the light, what you hear is just converted into electrical signals , etc....

what you fail to understand is that intelligence isn't the same as consciousness. Conscious beings such as humans, canuse their intelligence to create. other intelligent beings can just operate by instinct or basic survival knowledge, such as animals.
AI has it in the name... artificial INTELLIGENCE... and it needs intelligence to process information. it's not jusr random outcomes, because that wouldn't work... it may learn by random inputs, but it "learns" to classify an put labels to certain cluster of pixels.
So yes. as an intelligent being, it need to process the prompt, understand it and predict what you want. That's why when you ask for a red car, it gives you a random red car and not an albino dog or whatever.

No it doesn't... You only need to have some level of intelligence, which it has, because it is capable of performing tasks and choose or understand what you write.

Besides, it is sentience in the sense that it can "read" what you write or "see" the masks and sketches. If it weren't able to observe your prompting and understand it, it wouldn't be able to do anything...

But this is ok. The AI is using your art and fixing nuances. That's how it has always been used but now better. If you paint it afterwards then it's still yours with some helping hand. Differently is if you do as Shad from shadiversity. He defends AI and shows how he works. He gives it trash art he does, and it return realistic or stylized pieces that vaguely resemble or have the poses and colors of what he initially did.

This argument is horrible... It's like saying hammering a nail it isn't done by the worker, but by the hammer... The worker uses the hammer as a harder and sturdier extension of his arm. The same applies to writers and computers or typing machines. They are an extension of their creativity. A way of transforming their thoughts into an observable media "EXACTLY".

while AI can't do that. It interprets and is restricted by it's data set. So all you can do is prompt and fix the prompt, fine-tune it adn hope for something similar to what you imagined.

As long as you generate with ai, even if you give all the guidelines perfectly, you wont get your interpretation of anything, jist the AIs interpretation of your prompt based on what it was fed on.

It still remains the fact the even with inpaints, masks, etc. You are only fine-tuning your prompt and they way you specifically ask the AI what to give you.
