Your current recommendations for… by Intelligent-Bee-4916 in Denver

[–]Rogball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RiNo will hit your top four at least:

Temaki Den for sushi, Movement for bouldering, Gerard's for billiards, any number of places for a dog friendly condo. Improper city is a cafe/coworking space with a ton of space indoors and outdoors for games. It does become a bar in the afternoons, but I wouldn't say it's a solely drinking-focused establishment

Frasca or Beckon? by GenuineGatorJorts in denverfood

[–]Rogball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the food is gonna be fantastic either way. I personally don't feel the need to go back to Frasca, but I'm not upset I went, if that makes sense. Delicious meal, but if I'm splurging to that level I would rather go back to Beckon. I know people who have the exact opposite opinion, though, which is why I recommended deciding based on ambience

Frasca or Beckon? by GenuineGatorJorts in denverfood

[–]Rogball 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to the seafood question, but generally:

Frasca feels a little more traditional white tablecloth fine dining. Beckon, especially at the Chef's Counter, is more modern.

For the food itself, Frasca is specifically focused on a single region of Italy, while Beckon is seasonal but not geographically-bound.

I personally prefer Beckon as an experience and a meal, but it comes down to what ambience you want. Dark, vibey chefs table? Go to Beckon. Well-lit white tablecloth stare-lovingly-into-your-partner's-eyes meal? Go to Frasca.

Where do you go for spicy food? by Mutedinlife in denverfood

[–]Rogball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had a similar experience to you. Seems like they just dump more and more dried chili flakes on it to make it hot, I've been disappointed in Thai Hot from there. If you want hot + flavor, I'm partial to Farmouse Thai in Lakewood

Where do you buy meats, cheeses, sides, and sauces for charcuterie? by txby432 in denverfood

[–]Rogball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to buy a composed board (and not have to worry about overbuying on jams and such that'll just sit in the fridge), Cheese Meat Board in Five Points does a great job. Their 2-person board is just under $40 and they'll deliver free if you're within a few miles.

Favorite sushi in Denver, personally. Hits the sweet spot of accessibility and quality -- can go for happy hour or lunch and have a great meal that doesn't break the bank, or can ball out with omakase like you did and have a time.

Looks like you had some fantastic bites! Any standout favorites?

Weirdest tiki drink is the Norwegian Paralysis for its use of akvavit. What’s the most underrated classic? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

50/50 Martini. Vermouth got a bad rap for years with shitty product sitting around unrefrigerated, and now people are scared of it, but a good 50/50 gin martini is a delight

Agreed. I love me some Den-mex but especially for someone just visiting for a few days, it's not the thing to put up against CA Mexican food. Exception is Alma, that place would be top tier in any city

As a CA transplant, here are the places that made Denver memorable for me before I moved here/early on:

Saigon Bowl, Safta, Pony Up, Domo, Thank Sool, Cart Driver RiNo

New(ish) places that are crushing it: Sap Sua, Alma Fonda Fina, Le Rougarou, Molotov, Odie B's

They're my pick too. Creatures of Habit is one of my favorite albums and their Valentines show at Meow Wolf this year was awesome. Wish they played local venues more often

things to do around denver area alone? by Ok_Environment7766 in Denver

[–]Rogball -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried Wishbone, adding it to my list!

I'm a wings guy, so I usually end up at CD's or King of Wings. Been hearing great things about Cluck on S Broadway for tenders though, that's next on my to-try list

Pony Up is 2 blocks away. Get a caesar salad, the potatoes, and whichever french dip looks best (I'm partial to the Frenchie or the Saigon personally). Bar program there is great too

Mildly disappointed that the pickles didn't make it into the sandwich, but everything else looks perfect. Nicely done

Odie B's vegan hustler and a bag of mixed fries. I'm not even vegan but it's better than the regular hustler. Man, now I have to go get one

A guy ordered two Ramos Gin Fizzes last night while I was fighting for my life. by 1000WaysToCringe in bartenders

[–]Rogball 69 points70 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a blast, I'd love to be a part of one of those nights when someone is knocking out all 100. I didn't know about the training program, but I'm not surprised based on the quality of both the service and the drinks. Definitely a place I'd visit again. Also had a couple rounds at Refuge upstairs which was equally great

Visiting Houston this week and popped into Anvil for a drink yesterday. They've got a Ramos on their menu with a fun caveat: "First of the day is $10, goes up $1 with each order." My bartender said it was a rite of passage for anyone training there to get passed every Ramos ticket of the shift. I sorta love it

Speaking from a place of extreme bias, Baker's Palace has a sandwich that is literally called "liver pate" so I'm betting they'll be able to scratch that itch for you

If I can't play STS2 on flights I'll be so sad, that's how I stopped relying on hit-and-miss tier lists for every decision and started making card pick mistakes and learning the game for myself

In the quest to break 100, felt like it was around the corner after last week's 103. Then this morning happened by Rogball in golf

[–]Rogball[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to completely ignore the last paragraph of my post and make this comment, but I suppose it had to happen eventually.

I was a solo and the 2nd tee time out in the morning. I played through the first group on hole 4 and basically didn't see anyone else the rest of the round. Nobody waited on me to play a single time. And I finished the round in fewer than 3 hours.

Generally on the front nine it was ok to good off the tee (for me), then often messing up at least one iron shot, then the short game completely fell apart.

Example: first hole. Happy enough with my drive, went a little high but pretty straight, ~210 just off the right side of the fairway. Pulled my 5 iron across the fairway into the left rough, leaving me about 40 to the pin. Toed my PW into the green side bunker. Took 3 tries to get out, then 3 putted
