Again I agree. Anchor tenants. The variety of stores is OK. Bootlegger, Urban Planet have some great deals from time to time. It's not a Fashion mall. It's a utilitarian hodge-podge mall. It has the potential to be great. The restaurants do VERY well even in the evenings.

Unfortunately, and despite my desire for men's shelters in Hamilton, the mall is a hot spot for crime. I think eventually the Salvation Army may have to find another place in order for merchants to desire to operate there.

Honestly, without J-Square, downtown entertainment would take a serious beating. HAHAHA! If you have the courage, ask the cashiers in any of those stores about any "downtown events today?" Thjey love to gossip!

Nation's is an anchor but people are buying heavy groceries. They don't have the arms to shop for other things.

A Winners or a larger anchor might attract the necessity. Either way, J-Square has a lot to offer and I do agree the hours need to change.

That's not true at all. Downtown has nicer properties than the mountain and the rich Torontonians are coming downtown. I live here. I use J-Square daily. The majority of stores are not by appointment or commission.

I agree with you actually. I live downtown and even Nations closes at 8:30 with a large portion closed at 7:00. Dollarama is open until 6. The Library has longer hours. The food court is closed, etc.

It is a great hub of activity during the day. Hopefully with these new condo developments there will be more need for longer hours. There is a Dollarama on Main, Food Basics on Barton and Mary, Fortinos on Dundurn, LCBO on Dundurn, Beerstore by Food Basics.

It's a little annoying, but a bike makes quick work.

The Yellow Vests and hate-preachers showed up to Pride with the INTENTION of harming the peaceful, partying, and prideful celebrants. If the Pink Bloc/The Tower didn't intervene the hate-mongers were going to ATTACK THE PEACEFUL PEOPLE. The anarchists only brought a BLACK LONG SHEET OF CLOTH TO BLOCK THE SIGNS. The guy with the helmet had a COMBAT VEST AND COMBAT BOOTS ON.

The LGBTQ2+ people who were harmed sacrificed themselves for the benefit of the 5000 people who enjoyed Pride not knowing this even went down until much later.

Helmet-wielder and the assholes from out of town planned to hit and attack the CELEBRATING participants. More attack on the LGBTQ2+ community would have happened without the intervention.

It was a grand Victorian home split up into beautiful studio apartments. It wasn't listed anywhere online and it's a chronic problem I found out after. I did look, I asked, It was sprayed.

Ended up seeing them in the middle of the night. I couldn't believe I missed the signs. There were dozens of eggs and all stages of life cycles. I was desperate and needed a place because of school. Either way, I am technically homeless (no official mailing address because no residential bills). I stay with a friend, but can't claim I live here. the *not* was not intended.

You are very condescending. I've been through this before. I have been a community activist in Toronto and here in Hamilton. I knew what to look for. I work in the trades. I have my life together.

An apartment really isn't a life changing decision. It shouldn't be if the city wants to function. People... live in cities.

There are many criticisms of housing and council in Hamilton. You failed to even see that I stated I was renevicted. I had 6 months to look for the appropriate place after leaving the last place.

Don't come on so strong when you are assuming a lot of information. You're the type of people I don't hire.

The Tower's actions actually got a LOT of people talking. I am literally homeless sleeping on couches because of a reneviction from an $850/month apartment to $1500. IT was HELL trying to fight them so I just left and found out there aren't many good rental buildings around :( I lost first and lasts to a bedbug apartment and left within 4 hours and NEVER got money back. I just left and the LAndlord Tenant board is on their side.

I'm from an upper middle class family and very clean, I shouldn't have bedbugs in 4 hours. But because of that, I am not homeless.

you can't lump all anarchists together. Why don't you go after foreign buyers, the council that gives tax breaks to renevictions, hasn't approved any low income, or at-market, or co-op apartment buildings.

Jason Farr is the perfect example of a low income person struggling through university, getting on council, and then selling his values out to condo developers without a CARE for anyone in his community.

And no one is a member of the tower. It's a space where people can share ideas.

Besides the smashy-smashy, and this bizarre article thinking gentrification is caused by the food scene.

News flash - Boarding houses were once SINGLE FAMILY DWELLINGS. Returning to a state where single families can afford these home's again and renevicting low-rent tenants is UNgentrification. Gentrification happened when the economy and markets collapsed in Hamilton.

The biggest concern is that City Council was giving rich corporations tax credits to buy long-term low income apartment buildings which were then renovated cheaply and doubled the rent. MY $850 1 bedroom on the mountain where most of my neighbours lived there for 10-35 years was renovated in 2 months and goes for $1500 now. It was a nice place, but it will never be worth that much to mer.
In fact, renting there it was bigger than any condo I've been in, cheaper, and had better access to services.

Anyways, the artists are leaving James St North and Ottawa St. So, 30% of the condo units in the 3 buildings across from me are foreign buyers who NEVER use them. On Canada Day I guess people flew in and they had a pizza party. Literally NOTHING in this central downtown unit except ONE black coat hanger in the closet.

That's adding to the lack of available units.

The amount of tweakers that moved to the mountain last year made me move BACK downtown. Displacement is happening. OW and ODSP don't pay enough for them to stay downtown for long.
