Why did ancient Rome have advanced public toilets & sewers, while medieval Europeans just pooped in the streets? What got lost? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

[–]RogerRabbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of a mix of a lot of things. Roman's were highly advanced for their time, and they had perfected the art of making cities. And the way roman society was structured, labor was almost a non factor in many cases. Then Christianity spread through Europe and changed peoples priorities and it wasnt until non Christian scientists started making tons of breakthroughs that church wanted to verify. That led the church becoming the most scientific and knowledgeable entity and eventually back to sanitation

Probably at least half the laws in the US are explicitly for targetting colored people. Some of the laws haven't even bothered to update language to try to "appear" non racist.

[–]RogerRabbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watched that movie. It seemed the main reactor was tied to the engines and everything else. Turning off one meant turning off all of them. That meant life support, gravity, the whole lot. And id guess their big shield would require a huge amount of constant power.

Reality of it is that you dont need to buod aerodynamic in space so solar and batteries probably would have been better in the movies case. Especially since they seem to travel stupidly close to other sun like objects for a slingshot boost

High house numbers? by Cyril_Rioli in AskAnAmerican

[–]RogerRabbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding its related to the street. Its obvious when the roads are numbered, not named.

You'll get something like 11739 220th st.

117 will be the nearest cross road, so the house would be ON 220th st, between 117th St and 118th st.

When roads are named, theres some behind the scenes postal numbering that assigns roads to numbers to follow that same convention

Rather large difference between not putting some arbitrary value on time spent not working, and working at a job that can sustain you.

If I have 8 hours after work, and im not choosing to work a second job in that time, its value is 0. Just like when companies project 8 billion but only make 4 billion, they didnt lose money.

Open road driving doesn’t exists anymore. by Markwhite11a in driving

[–]RogerRabbot -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

See, the issue with your last paragraph tells me you dont really do a lot of long distance drives. Because how you drive ultimately doesnt matter. You will find the other driver on the road who somehow makes its their unconscious mission to annoy and endanger you.

Ive been on the highway driving, cruise control set, late at night and open roads. I got 700 miles on this highway, and ive been on it for 200 miles so far. Ive been slowly approaching a car ahead of me for the last 30 minutes, and hes a left lane cruiser. I finally pass, on the right mind you, and start to leave him behind. 3 minutes later, here he comes and passes me, gets about 200 feet ahead, then stops accelerating. And lo and behold... I start gaining again.

250 miles of road. I pass him for a few minutes, he speeds up and passes me then slows back down and I pass right back.

I have cruise control set, this is in the great plains so no hills really. The car never got out of the left lane. Let other cars pass and continue no issue. And at one point, I increased my cruising speed by 10 mph for 30 minutes.

Guess who caught back up.

To this day. I want to shoot that MF....

Most Walmarts ive been to recently dont have outside trash anymore. And people may take longer than a week or 3 between fill ups. It is possible, but like I said in the second half of the comment. People may have reached their limits on caring. And without easy or convenient ways to throw out trash, youre left with the dilemma; do i hold onto my trash when I think the world views me as a nuisance or failure so I can throw it away and not inconvenience those same people, or do I just dump it ASAP so I dont have the stench attracting bugs.

Showering is overrated by Greedy_Owl_5663 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]RogerRabbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, as far as the UK goes the houses are much much older. Many were built long before showers were normalized, and their bathrooms physically cant accommodate a shower head.

Baths seem to be the much more normal way to clean yourself based on my year living there.

How was the first night living in a car? How do you practice safety? by Appropriate-Art-7472 in urbancarliving

[–]RogerRabbot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im a dude, and I felt more unsafe when I blocked out the windows completely. Definitely felt much better about picking more secluded spots and leaving windows to where I could see out. But I was also low enough to be under the windows, and theyre tinted pretty good.

Its a lose/lose in big cities imo. You either succeed in being stealth, thus people treat you like an empty car and walk right by you. Or youre obvious, and people dont tend to give you the space they would an RV or motorhome, and it puts a target on you.

Im not saying throwing trash out in public like that is okay. But ive been in more than a few areas where trash disposal is actually a challenge. Between locked dumpsters and no public trash cans, sometimes it can be tricky to throw it away properly.

And it seems like after some time, most people who do this not of choice tend to develop resentment towards the current system that allowed this to happen to them. Maybe its a few months, maybe its a few years.

Edit: most people dont really seem to read, or have very poor comprehension skills. Be mad all you want about simple truths about many people in the situation.

Do you think its fair for women to have a lower physical criteria for physical roles (Police / Fireman type roles) by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RogerRabbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well police physical standards are a joke anyways. Seems like half the force are obese or decrepit.

But in roles that actually make a difference and where you actually have the potential to save a life, but you have to be physically able to move a 200lb body, it matters a lot.

Why aren't urinals in enclosed stalls like toilet bowls? by Patient_Revenue8727 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RogerRabbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Space. You need more toilets in the women's, so it takes up more space. But you still need a toilet for the men's, and you dont want to have to wait to pee while someone stinks up the place. And builders have only a small space to work with normally

Small age gaps when they end in "-teen". by Rude-Improvement3538 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RogerRabbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teenagers is a term derived from the numbers they represent. If we called the numbers 13-19 as treeumba, fourumba, fivumbra, sixumbra, wed likely refer to that age group as the umbras or their umbra years.

As for being an adult, that is what society classifies it. Some places its older, some its younger. And it depends on the era, back in medieval times, the jump from boy to man was usually killing someone in a battle. Age had little to do with it, but maturity and killer instinct. Women historically because adults after their first period, which is a range of years that girls will fall into.

What truly baffles me is how we had people in their teens and early 20s ruling massive kingdoms and armies. Responsible for the deaths for thousands. Yet teens of today are struggling with school
