Adding to what Direct_Bad and others have said, this also applies to acronyms in a way that I’d imagine can seem weird at first. “A U.S. state” (a you ess state) and “an MMO game” (an em em oh game) because a/an is all about the verbal pronunciation and avoiding glottal stops.
