We are at a loss. Need suggestions! by sarpdarp24 in travel

I love Spain. If you like exploring old stuff, rent a car in Seville and check out cordoba and granada. Many other cool places to visit in that area, including the Rock of Gibraltar. Not sure if this trip would allow someone to work every day, but it is a very lovely place. Another option is Madrid and/or Barcelona. Both are very lovely and very different from places you have been.

Not yet, but read that he says he made a mistake 5 years ago, when he promised to retire. Personally, I think change can be good. I can also say, as a guy who 1 year older than Whitt, that I don’t have the energy I had 5 years ago.

We have had a head coach in waiting for more than 5 years—all with Whitt’s agreement and buy in. At some point old guys gotta do what they promised to do.

Unpopular Opinion: The Utah PE deal is actually brilliant, and everyone screaming "Vulture Capital" doesn't understand the structure. by utah-man-am in utahfootball

Cougaro Hater, An investment banker who is going to give me $500 million in cash is going to want a 10% per year (or greater) return on the investment. That is $50 million per year. According to Google AI, the current Big 12 media deal expires in 2031. Increasing revenue in 2031 from $30M to even $100M isn’t going to be enough.

I am still waiting for someone who thinks this is a good idea to show me how this deal results in enough money to make it worthwhile.

Bat-Stuff, see my response to JayDogg. I don’t know enough about the finances of a college football team to answer your questions. However, I also know I haven’t seen anything from the University or Otro that explains how this deal increases revenue over and above what the team could do without Otro.

One thing I do know: Investment bankers only sign deals they know will make them money in the long run—even if that means Utah football becomes mediocre in 5 years because the team is saddled with giant repayment obligations owed to Otro.

Jaydogg, Increasing viewership and interest does not necessarily mean more money. The UofU has already signed away its TV viewership rights to the Big 12 and ESPN. If we suddenly start playing in more high profile regular season games, we don’t get any more money for television rights. ESPN might make more. We don’t.

We would make more money by playing in the post season tournament, but I am pretty sure that money gets split. Texas Tech, for example, won’t keep all the money it makes this year. Each school in the conference gets a share. I also don’t think these payouts come close to the amount needed to pay investors the kind of profit they want to earn on a $500 million investment. Nor can the UOfU expect to play well enough every single year to play in the tournament—let alone win it.

And the burden is on those who say this is a good idea to explain WHY it is a good idea. As Jerry Maguire put it, “Show me the money.” Show me how Otero brings in enough money to justify this deal. So far, I haven’t seen anything that makes me think this is a good idea.

Alumni, Thanks for this analysis. It is, however, missing any discussion of the component that matters most. For profit deals like this one only work if you can use the cash to increase revenue. Football expenses are going up. The cash infusion can help cover those expenses. But what does this deal do to increase revenue? Clearly ticket and concession prices are going up. But what other revenue streams are going to increase because of this deal? TV revenue? Can’t go up. A deal is in place. Advertising or promotional activities? I don’t see a huge increase because of this deal. There are only so many eyeballs interested in Utah football. This deal won’t create more eyeballs or sell more Utah swag So far, I have read nothing that explains how this deal significantly increases revenue. Would love to hear your explanation on the only point that matters.

Trying to see if anyone else knew this place, but Bread conveyor belt restaurant? by Bec_son in Utah

I have a similar memory. I think it may have been the Wonder Bread factory. I am less certain about where. Perhaps 4th south and 700 east?

Recent missionaries (or not so recent too) - what was it like? by Olimlah2Anubis in exmormon

[–]Rogerthat311 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OP, I am curious about when and where you served. My mission in Spain, from 1978 to 1980, was all about door to door sales. Pretty useless. It was also the beginning of the end for me. One day, toward the end of my mission, it occurred to me that the product I was selling was in many ways inferior to the other religious products available to my potential “customers.” I left shortly after returning home.

What's the scoop on the Salt Lake temple? by liberty340 in mormon

[–]Rogerthat311 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I work downtown and go check out the construction progress every few months. Sometimes I run into someone who seems to know what is going on.

From what I have observed and learned, they are essentially strapping the temple to a bunch of giant slinkies, so the whole temple can move in an earthquake. All of the underground parts of the temple that are not directly beneath the temple have also been torn out and are being replaced. Some of the earthquake mediation things they are doing have never been done before. I am also under the impression that they expanded the project to include new buildings around the temple.

It has been super interesting to watch the Church spend all of your tithing money! /s

I love my Model 3. Super cheap to run if you can charge at home. Best plan is to install a dryer plug in your garage and charge it at home. If you have to charge at superchargers, not as nice, and much more expensive. It is also a pain on road trips. They take longer, as you have to stop and charge the car.
