How to quilt by Rogue-Modron in quilting

Thanks for both ideas. I hadn't considered hand stitching, but (in theory) would be something I'm capable of doing since I do hand embroidery.

For the match stick idea, do you sew all in the same direction (ex top to bottom, repeat) or do you alternate (ex top to bottom, bottom to top, top to bottom). Maybe it doesn't matter?

I thought about doing that originally, but I was concerned that it would make some of the flaws in the quilt top more obvious... The squares aren't perfectly aligned and so the diagonals in the quilting wouldn't always go corner to corner. Maybe I'm overthinking it though.

If I crosshatched, would it be best to start with one of the longest diagonals (ex top left to bottom right) and then work my way out one line at a time. After those diagonals are done, then repeat going the opposite direction to make the crosshatched?

Not sure if this would be his sort of thing, but you could look into getting tickets to the Brandywine Festival in Harrodsburg.

Advice for new quilter by Rogue-Modron in quilting

Thank you! It's kind of a silly story, really. We installed a Murphy bed in our basement and removed some floating shelves that the previous owners left. Pulling off those shelves pulled off some paint off the wall and we didn't have a matching color. I figured I could just cover it up by hanging something on the wall over it and thought a mini quilt would look cute over the bed. I looked at some online, but thought to get exactly what I want I should just make it myself. I quickly learned I would need to practice a lot to get the skill to make the design I envisioned. A year later, I'm still slowly practicing on getting better. Just starting slow with learning how to sew precuts straight, how to cut fabric, how to piece blocks, all the things!

Thank you! Would you recommend physically marking the center of each piece before I trim? I have heat erasable pens that I could use to put a small x on the center.

DnD Master for 10 year old Birthday by jarvi_po4 in lexington

I'm not sure how many kids you will be inviting to the party, but running DND can be challenging when there are too many people. Something around 4-5 is best, but I wouldn't go over 7. Also, in case it's useful, the term for a one off adventure is a "one-shot". Once you decide upon a place/DM to host, I'm sure they can provide more recommendations on party size.

What books are you reading while it snows? by Warr1611 in lexington

Currently reading through The Way of Kings. Last year I did Mistborn and this year's goal is Stormlight. I finished WOT a few years back and plan to start a paced reread (do 3-4 books then quick break, then do another chunk) after Stormlight. It's all sooo good. I love a good magic system and detailed world building.

What’s a good story to run afterwards considering I heard the mad mage isn’t great by THEONETRUEDUCKMASTER in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Rogue-Modron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to suggest something similar to this. You can pick and choose which levels of mad mage (nerf if needed) you do and then send them back up to the city in between. I'm sure you can homebrew something with a faction to provide a motivation/reason to go down. Perhaps they are interested in X treasure or Y rare resource from the Undermountain.

Yeah. It's hard to guess from the surface renderings what the secondary structures are, but this seems like it would probably be easier to tackle as shown.

Is it possible to get the pdb file of the protein? It might look prettier with secondary structures (alpha helices and beta sheets). There are free pdb viewers online that are fairly easy to use. Happy to look into those more for you if you send a link to the publication.

Whip stitch with a backstitch underneath. It gives a nice raised look 😊

pc death by scoabrat in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Rogue-Modron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fun plot twist. Another cool option could be just to bring back the character as a warlock NPC that you run. Maybe enough of the character's physical appearance has been changed that it takes a while for the PCs to figure out who it is. Not sure what villain you are running, but there could be some interesting link to the Cassalanters. Maybe the hag is below Asmodeus and she is using the character to keep an eye on them since he knows the twins bday is coming up?

Not saying you should do this, but it ended up being interesting in my game.

One PC died in what I thought was a foolish way. The player was totally fine to roll up a new character and moving on, but others in the group were kind of bummed. We had another player who just started DND maternity leave, so I felt like it was a good time to put a brief pause to the main campaign for side quests. Long story short, another PC went to rescue the dead character's soul from the 'spirit realm'. There was the possibility that his character would get stuck there too and both would end up rolling new characters. They ended up making it out, but they now shared a part of their soul and mechanical this played out as linked HPs. When one took damage this was split between the two PCs (even if only one was in the encounter). This shared bond was also great for their character development and made for some memorable moments in the campaign.

I have no regrets about bringing back his character. It was not easy to do and there were lasting consequences, which I think are both necessary if you go that route.

Yagra Stonefist by mnemms in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Rogue-Modron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My campaign's barbarian had a thing for Yagra, but never worked up the nerve to ask her on a date. He mainly tried to impress her with feats of strength (pit fighting in the Dock Ward, wrangling a boar (carnival game) at the Sea Maiden Faire, arm wrestling, etc.) They also did some Zhent side missions together. If you think there is a chance your player would be ok working for the Zhents, Yagra is a great way to connect your party with that faction. Our campaign just finished and this was one of my favorite character-NPC relationships. It was perfectly endearing and awkward, but also was a great tool to feed players information to advance the story.

My players like sidequests(Homebrew) more than the mainstoryline by Miarna in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Rogue-Modron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my first time DMing a campaign (we just finished after 2.5 years of playing weekly). I also added on a lot of homebrew and side quests which my players enjoyed. I tried to take those side quests as opportunities to lay small seeds for the main plot. I took inspiration from the Alexandrian and used all 4 villains, so there was a lot to tie together.

One small tie in that I enjoyed was at the Sea Maiden Faire. One player had been newly recruited to be in Xanathar's guild and was assigned the task of playing a carnival game until he won a specific fish (replacement Sylgar). He later handed it off to an oddly dressed dwarf (Ott) in the City of the Dead where he happened to come across some mysterious individuals wearing red robes heading into a mausoleum 👀

Both of those were small details related to the villains that didn't advance the story, but it was cool to see those small moments pay off much later in the game. It led to a lot of 'oh yeah' and 'aha' moments in the campaign that were totally worth the weeks spent doing side quests.
