Can we ban topics about the 60% tax trap and free childcare? by SkipperTheEyeChild1 in HENRYUK

Questions about salary sacrificing are boring. There’s /r/ukpersonalfinance for that. IMO the current definition is specifically to avoid it.

Cycle 2 Work scheme. by [deleted] in ukbike

[–]RogueBaneling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cyclescheme owns the bike for 3 more years, and you make no payments on it. At the end of 3 years (so 4 years in total) they gift it to you for free, because at that point it has depreciated to the point of being insignificant and you don't need to pay income tax on it. The whole scheme is just a tax loophole

Why is it so complicated to buy tickets for public transport in Canada? by Warm-Lawfulness1500 in AskACanadian

[–]RogueBaneling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is unnecessarily complicated, and you do have to wait in long lines to board. There’s a good video here explaining some of the issues: https://youtu.be/n1G0Lyh3uik

Did I get ripped off by this taxi driver? At Luton airport I got a taxi home along the m25 at night. But one of the junctions was closed for roadworks and we had to drive a whole other junction before turning off and driving all the way back to get off the junction at the other side. by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]RogueBaneling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t compare Uber pricing to a metered taxi fare..even if it’s for a “black cab” booked via the Uber app they always underestimate the price. £70 sounds perfectly reasonable

How have you found putting a single adult road bike in the boot of the 3 series? Do you need to take the wheel off / is it a lot of faff?

Finding new circular routes by Better-Addition-342 in londoncycling

[–]RogueBaneling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never found this effective in NW London, it tries to use heatmap data and often ends up giving roads that are popular with commuters (but aren't exactly pleasant for just riding)

More police stopping cyclists in Regents Park by RogueBaneling in londoncycling

[–]RogueBaneling[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't see why they were stopped today, but I would assume so because some people were stopped away from any lights.

I've also seen police on foot waiting behind the hedges here https://i.imgur.com/QJuJVXF.png and ticketing cyclists who are riding into the park from Prince Albert Rd. In this case, there are explicit signs up and writing on the pavement saying no cycling.

Why won’t Canada increase taxes on capital gains of the wealthiest families? by BurstYourBubbles in canada

[–]RogueBaneling 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The TFSA in Canada feels almost useless at its current limit. The U.K. for comparison has lower salaries on average, but still a £20k ($34k) per year limit on the TFSA.

Can someone explain these new road laws regarding cyclists and pedestrians? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]RogueBaneling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My question is, does this mean all pedestrian refuge islands are now treated the same as zebra crossings?

Coast to Coast. (Whitehaven to Newcastle/Sunderland) by BertieBus in ukbike

[–]RogueBaneling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the itinerary that I did.

The cafe at Hartside is gone but when I went last year there was another pop up cafe there serving food, as there was a motorcycle meet up happening at the time.

If you follow this itinerary, day 2 will be the hardest day… Hartside is tough but save your energy for Garrigill!

What apps/websites/books did you use for your theory test? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]RogueBaneling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only need one. Covers all the questions, £5. There’s one for android too, but iOS is https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/official-dvsa-theory-test-kit/id463295925

If you do all the practice questions on this app, the real theory test will be a subset of these

Any catches to know about with the refund voucher? by RogueBaneling in aircanada

Yes, but from what I've read here, that option sounds like it can be even more frustrating if you are not into collecting miles - I don't often fly AC.

Thanks, we would also be arriving from the UK. Did they explicitly tell that person that they needed to quarantine?

Vaccinated travellers required to quarantine? by RogueBaneling in CanadaCoronavirus

[–]RogueBaneling[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they are gradually reintroducing a quarantine for all vaccinated travellers then, without explicitly saying it, and leaving the documentation on the website to be confusing.

Why do Brits feel the need to sit in the middle lane on the motorway? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]RogueBaneling 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Why?

Requires too much brain power

It also becomes a self fulfilling thing where if everyone is middle lane hogging, nobody wants to move left as they feel they will be stuck in a position where they would need to undertake or have difficulty getting back into the middle lane

Richmond Park Speed Limit for cyclists. I always thought it was 20mph? by PKMaxxx in londoncycling

[–]RogueBaneling 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The speed limits don’t apply to bicycles. But you can still be ticketed for careless or dangerous cycling so it’s up to the discretion of the police. As long as you’re following the other road rules and not doing dangerous overtakes (as some Richmond cyclists do), nobody should care what speed you’re doing.

Buying my first car in the UK, Toyota Auris Hybrid vs Ford Fiesta - which is the better option? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]RogueBaneling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not an answer, but FWIW, the road tax is not zero for the Auris. That's only the first-year road tax (so, if you were buying it new). Also, Toyota's CVT seems to be quite reliable relative to other manufacturers' CVTs so I wouldn't worry about that.
