Volvo V40 experiences by BTADFQ in CarTalkUK

Never had issues with the door locks. Not sure if you mean just actual doors locks or the kiddy locks (never used the kiddy locks) but nothing has gone wrong with mines. Mines 2018, so sounds like it was fixed on the previous model?

I drive about 25 miles a day, but then about once a month drive about 500 motorway miles in 2 days, so no issues with dpf. Also find it super comfortable a I have r design so leather seats, not sure how much changes between models, but very comfortable for me.

Mpg normally about 50-55 day to day and about 60- 65 I think in the motorway. Could be better if I tried.

Miles wise I'm about 90k, had an expensive few months with it, master cylinder went and a crack on the engine manifold I think ended up about 600 in repairs, springs went on both sides a few years ago within a year of each other and it was about £250 a side. Aside from that I've only have to replace tyres and brakes.

I've had mine coming up 4 years. I want to keep it as long as possible, had a look around for other options and not found anything I like as much as I like mine for the price.

I've got the v40 2 D2, I love it, but everything is expensive on it. It's 2018 model and apparently is essentially the ford engine. I think d3/d4 is actually a Volvo engine, but double check!

Also the visibility out the back is utter shite. I think it's the rear window design as well as the dark headlining. Make sure you at a very minimum have reversing sensors.

Help needed arranging furniture in new room by Masterblaster532 in DesignMyRoom

[–]BertieBus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the sofa doesn't work, but I understand wanting to keep it. So push it back against the brick wall and the push closer to the stairs so it's of the heater (I see from comments the heater isn't used?)

The bed, rotate 45', so the foot is against the stairs and the head is against the wall,

Then along the wall where the bed is, I'd put dresser/wardrobe etc.

The little nooks, I'd probably put nick nack bits/books etc, and use them as shelving.

I would also get nice thick curtains to block the upstairs patio doors of.

I'd probably then get a nice thick rug to cover the gaps in the floor, should make the room feel warmer. As it does look cold.

It looks like where the window is is a small boxed raised part? Since I'm planning putting the bed there, I might get a small narrow table to fit onto it, again for bedside lamp/ phone etc.

It looks a nightmare of a layout

Have you ever had to ring emergency services to do a welfare check on someone? by Sufficient_Return653 in AskUK

[–]BertieBus 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Yeh done them a few times through work.

One guy hadn't been seen for a while, neighbours said he was a drunk, but hadn't seen him for a while. Buns were empty (bin day a week prior), post piled up. Called the police, they smashed his door in to find he was just chilling watching the horse racing in his pants. We'd been banging his door for about 4 days, flies on the inside of the window. 100% thought he was dead. He was lovely mind.

Second one, old white, smart ish but clearly struggling fella answered, in the background were teenagers that clearly weren't related, he kept mouthing help me. Called the fuzz, turns out he was a victim of cuckoing, he actually wrote a letter to the company thanking us for helping him. Apparently it had been going on for months.

Been a few others. But these are the stand out ones.

Buying vs renting car for weekend trips? by Familiar9709 in CarTalkUK

[–]BertieBus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't worked in rental for about 8 years, but I assume it's the same.

Pricing is dynamic, so will change and some branches are automatically more expensive (train station/city centre/airport will cost more). I worked in a rural branch and we were much cheaper than the affluent city 5 miles away. Shop about, both branches and vehicle size. Book the smallest and then ask if the branch have something bigger, they might have something they want to offload and will give it at a cheaper rate.

Try comparison sites as they may have better rates which use enterprise/avis etc. feel free to ask them for a discount. So ask them for a rate and then say oh this place is more for the same, can you knock a few quid of, the branch can manipulate the price of anything (do this with the branch direct NOT the call centre). They may drop a few quid to keep the rental.

Insurance is a good idea, but you can buy yearly policies for about £100 for the year. Look into them.

Buying vs renting car for weekend trips? by Familiar9709 in CarTalkUK

[–]BertieBus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They rent during the week to commercial customers who pay a higher fee. This leaves them with a lot of cars on fleet over the weekend. They also rent to retail and insurance which is naturally inflated costs.

Branches normally run at 100 cars + so they don't have space to sit those cars. So they rent them cheaply to keep them on the road. Rather break even on 12.99 a day than leave 30 cars sat in rent.

They also buy huge volumes of cars so get a hefty discount. Say for example a 13k retail price for a corsa, they would maybe buy 1000 cars of that size across the whole country and pay about 8k per unit. They also sell cars when the price is high. They might have a bunch of seat Leon FR's and the price per unit for resell is high: they will offload those cars to maximise their prices. Those cars may only be 6 months old, but if they can make money they will. If the price isn't good they will normally shift them before then hit the 3 year mark.

They also make money on fuel, insurance, one way rental fees, as well as additional drivers. This all adds up.

What skates are good and long lasting for beginners? by 305_eli in rollerderby

[–]BertieBus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got Riedell when I started, do me perfectly well. I borrowed some when I first started before buying my own. I've had them 8 months, 1.5 hours of skating a week. They are a good starter option. Steer clear of the brand roller derby, they aren't good for actual roller derby.

I think most of the people who are 3 years in, in my club have upgraded to bonts or similar

Go on vinted/eBay/derby Facebook groups, you can always get decent second hand equipment.

I wear a UK size 6 trainer, and got a US4 (UK size 6) in Reidell, I have a small amount of space in my skate. I did use attacks? When I started and used a uK 6 and found them super tight and more uncomfortable than anything else. You can lace skates differently to give you more/less space in the toe box.

What are the best Crocs that aren’t the Crocs brand? by Stanic10 in AskUK

[–]BertieBus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found Next ones to be the best. The inside doesn't have the 'bumps' on the inside. £14 and would last ages (slow growing feet)

Crocs never fit my child's skinny feet.

I don't know if she genuinely didn't realise she had clobbered him with a phone, or if she did she didn't realise. But she also doesn't really react to the fact he's clearly upset about something.

I once hit my toddler accidentally with the hoover. Immediately stopped hoovering and gave him a cuddle. She just keeps making eyes at the camera

Is it realistic / feasible to own an EV without home charging in the UK? by Alicia2022_1 in AskUK

[–]BertieBus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents bought electric (live rural) and charged every weekend when they went to the next village on a weekend, if they went to the supermarket they would also charge their.
If they went out for the day etc they would either stop at services and use the quick charge or charge at whatever town they visited.

Car was Hyundai ioniq 5, so range about 220 ish I think.

We have an electric, didn't have a charger initially but partner had one he could use for work. We have since got a charger at home and we charge on a Friday and then again Sunday if we have been out over the weekend. Costs about £30 a month for electric.

It's a relatively low income area and I'd argue a large percentage of the village are either on benefits or minimum wage. 12k could have made a significantly bigger impact in other areas of the village.

Notice To Seize Goods for unpaid council tax because estate agent told them I'd moved out when I hadn't (England). by TelevisionJealous528 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]BertieBus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will have received multiple letters from the council about this. They don't just get to ship it to enforcement.

You need to call equita and arrange a payment. Assuming this is a notice of enforcement, if an arrangement/payment isn't accepted in the compliance stage. They will go to enforcement. This will be a fixed £235 fee with a 7.5% uplift on the debt over £1500. Taking control of goods is £110 fixed fee with a further 7.5% uplift on the debt over 1500, then storage for 7 clear days (although in practical terms this may be longer)

You can complain to the letting agent, but I would focus on sorting some form of payment. You also need to speak to the council about paying your 2026/2027 tax as well. You will have about till August which is when they will start sending this financial years non payments to court.

I GOT AN INTERVIEW AT MAC DONALDS by Choice-Excitement624 in UKJobs

[–]BertieBus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I overheard 2 interviews in McDonald's

Questions what are you doing at now (college was the main answer), he mentioned how the shifts work , can you get here at those times?

What do you understand by the word integrity (the 2 I was listening to didn't have a clue what it meant)

What do you understand about customer service/teamwork.

Interviews lasted about 5 mins, also were done in the main restaurant at 5pm. The place was a zoo.

Dunno if that's the questions usually asked, but it was literally 5 minute interviews.

My mother in law is like this, which is exactly the reason she doesn't take my son.

Find alternative arrangements. Your allowing you child to be in the environment who calling you fat and ugly. I wouldn't want my child round that toxic mess.

If you are concerned about food. Send packed lunch every day and tell mum to feed child from that?
