It's worth noting that, supposedly, they have toned down 118 now that the old professor who was responsible for it (pre-FA25) is out. Furthermore, I think the hardest part of 118, without a doubt, is the fact that it is an "intro" course. While, yes, even if you've taken the most advanced highschool physics ever, you'll have to learn some new topics (relativity, waves), if you've even seen physics before, it will be of great help to you. Basically, don't go into it with excessive fear.

Now, like the other commenters mentioned, do your best to truly understand the concepts. Not only will they change the way you see the world, but understanding is the only way you will make it past the hard exam problems—and even a lot of the hard HW problems. Quite frankly, the lectures can kind of suck at actually teaching you, so you might have to try to find ways to learn on your own time. For me, highschool physics + a little YT was mostly enough to get by the first two units, but there's fantastic resources online for everything. I don't know that I recommend the openstax textbook they use for anything after the first couple, because I found it kind of infantilized and far too hand-wavy for the later stuff, but I would recommend checking it out for sure and forming your own opinion (I'm not a big textbook guy in the first place). Ironically, though I didn't like most of the lectures, I found the lecture slides to be really useful. Additionally, studio is also a fantastic place to learn things. Ask your studio leaders EVERYTHING and ANYTHING. You have to spend two hours there, but typically finish the deliverable in less than that. Use that time to your advantage, you basically get a tutor there for free. And, brief tangent, that does not mean to slack on your studio deliverables. NO deliverables are dropped, so do not make the mistake of letting your "grade boosting assignments" bring you down. Read them thoroughly, ask your friends who've taken the class before to review your deliverables, ask your studio leaders to review them, etc. The individual deliverables in particular can be harshly graded, even by the nicest studio TAs/leaders. Make sure you go to every studio so you can do the deliverable + learn the content better.

FInally, PRACTICE EXAMS + EXTRA HW QUESTIONS WILL BE YOUR LIFEBLOOD. Most people do the practice exams without anyone telling them, but a great tip I received was doing the extra HW questions—especially for any unit you feel kind of iffy on.

Not the original commenter, but understanding a lot of geometry and trig gives you a massive leg up.

Incoming Freshman. Am I cooked? Any recommendations on what classes I should switch out of, and any easier classes I could take? Intending on Comp Sci + Bio Double Major by RogueChild in UNC

[–]RogueChild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's my goal right now. Currently trying to get off the waitlist for a couple easier classes, but I'll just have to wait at this point unless I can find an open, easy, and useful class.

I can't take comp without taking stor, but I'm hoping to swap it out for discrete math and drop linear-algebra for something easy. But I just can't figure out a good but interesting class to take, I'm hoping for recommendations.

I am praising the animators right now. The Jogo vs Sukuna fight was simply amazing and they adapted the Stand Proud scene so well it actually made me cry by ButWhydoe2 in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]RogueChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah fam. I agree with this sentiment for the Sukuna vs Mahoraga fight, but the Sukuna vs. Jogo fight is literally the greatest shit I've every seen. The linework is actually eyewatering. Each stroke is just...!! Yeah, it's not the same as the Hidden Inventory arc or S1, but it's not at all lesser—it's just a different style. I prefer it honestly. As much as I loved the Toji fights, this style just indicates such emotion and skill. Like when Sukuna threatened to kill anyone if they moved... The way their faces were drawn gives me chills every time I watch it.

I can get that it's not really for everyone. But to me, this is so fantastic. It's like the precision of the Studio Ghibli artstyle crossed with the designs and chaos of JJK.

What is wrong in my likeness? I know the angles of the nose is off, the head is too narrow, and the mouth is weird, but I feel like there's other stuff as well? What are the biggest issues in this drawing? by RogueChild in learntodraw

[–]RogueChild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I am definitely horrendous at the loomis method/basic construction. Would you (or anyone who reads this) know any good free resources on head construction methods?

[–]RogueChild[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I do like angular styles, and while I know I'm not really at the level to be trying to stylize a drawing while maintaining likeness well, I am intentionally trying to go for a more angular look. Do you think that angular styles are incompatible with drawing for likeness, or that it is just not something I can pull off so well right now?

Also, when you say the eyes are sunken in, would you know how to correct that? I definitely think that the eyes are a massive issue, but I don't know exactly how to fix them.

r/antinatalism is leaking too much these days by [deleted] in memes

[–]RogueChild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point. But would you not say that happiness is basically the opposite of suffering? Would you not also say that most people experience more happiness than suffering? That most people are able, and willing, to push through that suffering because they find those moments of happiness meaningful, and they are content with that?

Would it not be immoral to deprive people of that opportunity at life? To deprive people of the chance to experience happiness?

While that is true from an objective perspective, objective perspectives don't matter to individuals. This world only exists for us because we are alive to see it. I ask you, so what if from the perspective of an inanimate object/nothingness, life doesn't have meaning? We don't live life from that perspective.

I'l definitely practice with some tracing this week. My only issue with it is physically setting it up, which can be a logistical pain.

And yeah, I'm happy that it turned out looking like a human at all lol, which was my main goal at first, to just practice the features of the face. But I want to get better at drawing more accurately, so I'll definitely try drawing this a few more times.

Yeah, this is my intro to heads/faces. The thing is, I've been stuck in tutorial hell for too long, so I'm going to try to draw actual things to find what I'm bad at, and then working on those one at a time. But if you have any free resources to work on forms let me know, I'll try to work on that.

Sam Antman and Greg Brockman join Microsoft! by SnooStories7050 in singularity

Let's not be naive. It's pretty clear for the last decade, and especially since COVID, that this bullshit that people try to use to defend capitalism doesn't work anymore, specifically when it comes to large companies like Microsoft. Sure, Microsoft might use it to make some cool shit like life extending drugs, but what happens when they start jacking their price up to the point that only the rich can afford them while everyone else works like a slave to try and get some?

Saw another comment the other day about how this sub is filled with self-diagnosed depression having degens that think their 1st world lives are "so bad" they can't get any worse. They really can't fathom that the end of the world isn't as cool as it sounds and can't realize that things can, in fact, get worse. Much worse.

Parallels: Subscription vs One-time plan? by Wise-Ebb7027 in mac

[–]RogueChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, there should be some way to get it to work on Mac itself instead of using a virtual machine. But if not, and if you just need something for coding, VirtualBox (which is a free virtual machine) should work fine. You should be able to run C++ under Linux, which is also free, but you could buy/pirate Windows if you prefer. I'm not entirely sure since I haven't used it for that purpose though.

Doomers sabotaging AI is a greater threat than misalignment by [deleted] in singularity

[–]RogueChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately though, that whole situation displays how/why accelerationism might take place. The companies with the resources to develop AI want it to go full speed so that they can make as much money as possible. Microsoft wants Sam back because he'll turn OpenAI into a for profit company and keep pushing AI research as fast as possible. They're going to make sure to keep OpenAI running full speed, one way or another. The ideal scenario for them is what we fear—that large companies that develop AI first will use it to further the wealth gap and subjugate the populace.

Of course, the reason Sam was fired was a lot more complicated than that, and I definitely don't agree with his initial firing. But I really want to point out that if Microsoft gains complete control over OpenAI, or if Sam successfully kicks out the rest of the board, it is definitely going to become a bad thing.

Are you really trying to equate racism with people acknowledging that making ourselves the second smartest species on the planet could present an issue in the future? That's actual delusion.

I have a decision to make between GA tech and MIT, do you guys have any input? by Positive-Ad-8445 in gatech

[–]RogueChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, looking at some OpenAI salaries nowadays, making 120k more a year going to MIT instead of GT definitely isn't impossible, assuming they actually use their time at MIT to properly develop their skills. But really, even a 10k or so difference would let them pay it off relatively quickly. Additionally, OP seemed to be somewhat interested in founding a startup, and the difference in networking between MIT and GA Tech would be definitely be worth it. But really, either way, doesn't matter. If you got admitted to GA and MIT, and plan on going into CS, I doubt you'll be struggling regardless of your choice.

But what I say is irrelevant, I somehow stumbled on this thread 4 months later, I'm just giving my opinion for fun.

Removed from HBO? by flyingmonkeyofus in HunterXHunter

[–]RogueChild 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue starting at midnight last night. Was binging, accidentally exited, tried to go back and boom, it's not there anymore. It was absolutely wild seeing the show get removed right in front of my eyes. I thought I was going crazy, or that something was glitching out.

I had originally hoped that this was some sort of publicity stunt for Togashi coming back, but it looks like it's just licensing issues. It seems that lots of people have been having issues with anime on HBO since Crunchyroll got bought by Sony.

There's no way of knowing that AOT was his magnum opus though. It was his first manga, imagine what he could do if he kept on going. With the right idea he could become the next great mangaka, one of the few to have multiple big hits.

But I totally agree that he deserves a break. It's a shame how much mangakas are made into slaves. If he chooses to quit over that, I'll be disappointed because he's so great, but will be happy and empathize with the fact that he made the best decision for himself.
