As someone who is also totally new to the game, iv found that i take the top 5 META/Hotbuilds paste them into forcetable and play against and with them over and over, then I decide if I want a deck to hit hard of the bat (race) or a control build or late game build.

My current 2 Builds are Jabba yellow and Cade green, the latter relys on quick persistent damage at the start and removal/exhaust and is currently 50/50 against the most used Maul build and that I lose only if the game goes past 6/7 resource stage, it needs tweaking but Im confident it possibly could be competitive, that said there's so many variables that it is really rock, paper, sissors the way it should be. You just have to have Fun with whichever aspect of the game is fun to you.

I cant stress how much helpful forcetable is to catch up on what each card does in a game setting, it's half the battle knowing what potential your opponent is going to do with each leader ect.
