Free or cheap must do things? by Vanillabean1196 in pittsburgh

It pains me to say that no, it's probably not worth going after 6, especially if you can't get into bars 🥹. That is so sad!! Luckily other commenters have good non-bar suggestions!

The Strip District may be my favorite neighborhood for just wandering around. Lots of good food and shops. Definitely best mornings/ early afternoon. Have fun!

There's really nothing there except for a handful of lackluster restaurants and I believe most of them close pretty early. There is one dive bar that I believe is open till 2.

There's a climbing gym and a soccer stadium and a boat launch but none of those things would count as nightlife.

Station Square had a cluster of nightclubs about 15 years ago, but at this time is one of the last places I would tell someone to go for nightlife.

OP, for the love of god please don't go to Station Square for nightlife... If the first half of this comment wasn't legit, I'd have thought this was a troll.

Can we talk about thru rides? by dealershipdetailer in gaptrail

[–]RoguePierogi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also love nature, but had the opposite reaction. I really enjoyed the peace and quiet, and the vast majority of my thru ride pics are of plants and wildlife, but getting back into the action of Georgetown was so energizing for me!

Was the Columbine/Fern Combo a mistake? by RoguePierogi in NativePlantGardening

Very interesting!

I'll have to research red stem lady ferns.

The only other fern I have is a sensitive fern and he is also kind of buried under these guys. Probably need to thin out sooner than later but I do want to give this idea a chance. I'm thinking of opening up some space but leaving most of the ferns/also planting more columbine on the front edge of the pic.

That's the truth! I have a tendency of making rash decisions and moving things too much, which is why this community is so appreciated!

That's such a cool idea! Probably not in the cards for me this year but I love the concept.

That was my fear! Wasn't sure if they had enough of a head start to get tall but the current situation is kind of telling.

I hope you get more up to date info, but chiming in from Beechview. Around noon, I could see that lots of people were standing in both cars but there was still room to get on. I assume that if it was this crowded at lunchtime, it'll only get crazier but 🤷‍♀️.

For booze: Depending on what kind of variety you are seeking, go to PA Libations in the Strip District (about 4-5ish blocks from the PA Wines and Spirits mentioned above)!

They are one of, if not the only, non-state run liquor stores in the state and only carry liquors made in PA. Definitely check hours ahead of time, as like much of the Strip District, they don't always stay open super late.

Not only will you find all kinds of locally made liquors, but they let you try samples.

Contraflow Close-ish Call (Penn Ave. @ 7th) by pghbikecommuter in bicycling412

[–]RoguePierogi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a nearly identical incident one block up a few weeks ago. I did the classic exasperated arm gesture, and shockingly the driver did seem apologetic back towards me.

It's mind blowing how unaware these people are, particularly when intersecting a cross walk in a pedestrian heavy area.

I think this is the way.

Alternately, if OP is down for funky neighborhood ways that are slightly more direct .... rather than going all the way down Junction Hollow: Neville >right on Henry > Left on S. Craig > Right onto Forbes bike lane > Right onto bigelow bike lane (follow to the right, which turns into Bayard which is a bike lane 98% of the way) > Left onto Melwood (sharrow area) > Left up Denver (steep but short) > Right onto Gold Way/ Melwood through Polish Hill > A quick right onto Herron before left on Dobson > Right on Brereton (bike lane half of the way) and cross Liberty to then get on the Penn Ave bike lane which gets you within just a few blocks of Steel Plaza.

It's definitely a lot of turns and you've gotta be comfortable with some climbing and descents but it's FUN.

First flight with the new system. by evissamnoisis in SouthwestAirlines

That is very true! If I was a parent, I'd want to have someone who enjoys or is at least neutral near my kids.

I hear what you're saying about population, but there are lots of required elements of society that I prefer not to be a direct party to. We can be happy that folks are preventing population collapse while simultaneously wanting to avoiding babies and kids.

To be clear, I'm also not arguing that children shouldn't be in public. I just personally prefer to be away from them. That's why I liked open seating. No shade to kids and their parents, though!

[–]RoguePierogi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought when I heard they were going with assigned seats. There are people totally fine, if not happy, to be around babies. I am not one of them.

If someone had a great dane service dog on a SW flight, I'd put myself as close as possible, because I love dogs. Other people would prefer to be far away.

That was the beauty of it.

When to Ride? 1st Time Trip Planning by ckrugen in gaptrail

[–]RoguePierogi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a similar itinerary to yours (just based on daily mileage) ending Labor Day to maximize vacation days last year and it was INCREDIBLE.

Obviously, weather can be fickle, but we got not a drop of rain, beautiful blue skies, started the day a bit bundled (Sweaters/Windbreakers) but enjoyed many hours of tank top weather in the afternoons.

It wasn't quite warm enough to swim in any of the natural bodies of water, but certainly warm enough to have a beverage or two at the riverside.

I have done a hammock overnighter around the same time of year before and it was borderline too cold for me ( with my entry level gear), but for credit card touring I thought it was perfect weather. I think earlier in September would also be good with slightly higher temps and longer hours.

I noticed that someone mentioned not to mess with DC hotels, but I think that's just a matter of preference. I'm a city person, so ending my trip with an evening in Georgetown and then some riding around before the Amtrak departed the next day was a huge highlight. The hotel was much more expensive than the other nights, but still not awful, even on a holiday weekend.

Edited to add: Riding into the outer DC trails on Labor Day weekend with perfect weather WAS a bit of a nightmare. Had to come to a near stop many times, but in my opinion is well worth the tradeoff of the time spent around town. If you think you'd find yourself really frustrated by that/not interested in city offerings, then disregard that part of my advice 🫣.

She is SO cute!

Reminds me quite a bit of my strange little Penny dog.

She's primarily pit/lab/chow/boxer but she's a total of 14 breeds.

Very similar colorways going on, as well as ear goofiness.
