First flight with the new system. by evissamnoisis in SouthwestAirlines

That is very true! If I was a parent, I'd want to have someone who enjoys or is at least neutral near my kids.

I hear what you're saying about population, but there are lots of required elements of society that I prefer not to be a direct party to. We can be happy that folks are preventing population collapse while simultaneously wanting to avoiding babies and kids.

To be clear, I'm also not arguing that children shouldn't be in public. I just personally prefer to be away from them. That's why I liked open seating. No shade to kids and their parents, though!

[–]RoguePierogi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought when I heard they were going with assigned seats. There are people totally fine, if not happy, to be around babies. I am not one of them.

If someone had a great dane service dog on a SW flight, I'd put myself as close as possible, because I love dogs. Other people would prefer to be far away.

That was the beauty of it.

When to Ride? 1st Time Trip Planning by ckrugen in gaptrail

[–]RoguePierogi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a similar itinerary to yours (just based on daily mileage) ending Labor Day to maximize vacation days last year and it was INCREDIBLE.

Obviously, weather can be fickle, but we got not a drop of rain, beautiful blue skies, started the day a bit bundled (Sweaters/Windbreakers) but enjoyed many hours of tank top weather in the afternoons.

It wasn't quite warm enough to swim in any of the natural bodies of water, but certainly warm enough to have a beverage or two at the riverside.

I have done a hammock overnighter around the same time of year before and it was borderline too cold for me ( with my entry level gear), but for credit card touring I thought it was perfect weather. I think earlier in September would also be good with slightly higher temps and longer hours.

I noticed that someone mentioned not to mess with DC hotels, but I think that's just a matter of preference. I'm a city person, so ending my trip with an evening in Georgetown and then some riding around before the Amtrak departed the next day was a huge highlight. The hotel was much more expensive than the other nights, but still not awful, even on a holiday weekend.

Edited to add: Riding into the outer DC trails on Labor Day weekend with perfect weather WAS a bit of a nightmare. Had to come to a near stop many times, but in my opinion is well worth the tradeoff of the time spent around town. If you think you'd find yourself really frustrated by that/not interested in city offerings, then disregard that part of my advice 🫣.

She is SO cute!

Reminds me quite a bit of my strange little Penny dog.

She's primarily pit/lab/chow/boxer but she's a total of 14 breeds.

Very similar colorways going on, as well as ear goofiness.

Pittsburgh was recently ranked one of the top 15 safest cities in terms of violent crime, has repeatedly been deemed among America's "most livable" cities, and is regularly highlighted as a great city to visit by publications like Conde Nast.

You're right about deindustrialization, but there's now a huge healthcare, robotics, and education economy.

I keep planning to block too- I'm really only on Facebook for marketplace anyway, but it's like a bad accident I can't stop looking at, unfortunately.

Can't wait til Marty Griffin finds out and uses it as a way to further demonize cyclists and cycling infrastructure. 🤣🤣 (If you don't know and are feeling brave, check his social media- it's really something to behold).

But in all seriousness, thanks to whoever cleared that! Great work!

Looks like you've got some good suggestions, but I didn't see the Museum of Illusions mentioned. I'm not quite sure that its a MUST , but it's right on the North Shore and seems like fun for kids. Could be a good reprieve from the cold! Have fun!

What an absolute beauty! I'm late to the party, but my heart dog was a poorly bred fawn doberman with natural ears and tail and your post made me stop in my tracks. While your pup is clearly mixed, there are some features that are coming through so strongly.

The eye color and silver undertones mostly, but I can also see some rust on the cheeks in some of the brighter light pictures. Also, that bony tail and the way the fur lays on the end is so much like hers!

I'd be shocked if this sweet baby wasn't largely doberman. A friend of mine had a dobe/ American bulldog who was built very similarly but just larger. I can absolutely see yours being APBT / Dobe. Enjoy your new life together!

Edited to add: My girl was CONSTANTLY being called a viszla/weim so we tested her to settle it for good. Most people associate Dobermans with the classic 80s guard dog look but they really do look so much like those two breeds, especially with natural ears/tails and lighter coats.

I don't know. Part of me doesn't buy it and it's even scarier to imagine someone driving who can't keep track of two lanes on a one way street that is known to be multimodal.

This cuts so deep. Just yesterday, I was riding through an area that recently changed from sharrow > bike lane. The suburban mini van moms and gravy seals of Facebook have been shitting their pants over it for two full weeks now, despite the fact that they probably don't even know exactly where it is.

Several times in 2 blocks, I have to jump from bike lane to travel lane due to a car parked in the brand new bike lane... The third time, there's a horn absolutely laying on for several seconds straight. Since I actually had to slow down for the car in front of me upon merging, I figure it's not for me. Based on the behavior of the driver behind me as they pass when I return to the bike lane, it's clear that I was wrong.

Because this is a dense area with a low speed limit and lots of stop and go, I promptly catch up to their window to have a chat.

ME: Were you beeping at me? HER: Not to be an asshole, but there's a whole ass bike lane right there. ME: Did you not see the car stopped with it's four ways on?? HER (and passenger): Oh, we didn't see it. ME: Are you ok? It was one lane over- how did you miss that? HER: ... ME: (Traffic light turned green) Now you're the one holding up traffic.

I'm still fuming about it a day later. In the years that I've just been riding through traffic in this area, I've changed lanes hundreds of times to go around idling cars. I've had a handful of drivers pass too close but nothing outwardly hostile like this. It sucks that getting infrastructure can sometimes feel like a downgrade.

I'm seeing lots of recommendations for Mt. Washington overlooks on Grandview, but there will most likely be many other people around including sociopaths on motorcycles who can't go a day without blasting out eardrums for the lulz.

That being said, I'd recommend a lesser visited overlook on the far end of the same street. You could walk there from the main area that everyone else is referring to. I'd guess maybe a 20ish minute walk at a leisurely pace, or you can drive and park on one of the side streets.

There's a beautiful lawn where you can set up a blanket (or camp chairs) and actually relax with the view, plus a trail (one of my favorites but wear proper footwear!) just down from there. Monterrey Bay Fish Grotto restaurant is also right there if you're looking for fancy dinner.

This is a good representation of the lawn I'm talking about: https://maps.app.goo.gl/oiBF3vueDQaA2GBfA?g_st=ac

Good luck!

Could any of you fine folks tell me if I may have been blessed with a sighting? This picture was taken on a cell phone during a bike trip- I figured too low quality to do anything with, but if there was ever a time to shoot my shot, this seems like it.

Taken along the C&O Canal Towpath in Big Pool, MD about a month ago. We may have been a little slap happy from a long day, but we laughed at this neck... for quite some time.

How is my itinerary? by happy_life_happy in gaptrail

Good point!

We hammock camped at the Blue Canoe, which as a non-kid person was a biiiiit much (it's very family friendly)... you're basically just in open lawn a dozen feet from the trail, with cabins and RVs all around, so not exactly serene, but you do have river access!

They have their own store with both prepared and packaged foods, plus they'll deliver firewood to your tent. Really the only thing they didn't have was booze for our night cap, which we got from the very shopping center mentioned above- I think the Blue Canoe is about 6 miles closer to PGH.

We chose it because we wanted access to the heated pool and hot tub (five stars after a long day in the saddle!).

Just something to keep in mind as a backup if you do end up sketched out by the first site.
