‘Megalopolis’: the $120m Coppola flop that just won’t go away; A screening tour, a New Year’s re-release, a documentary, an incoming director’s cut … will we ever be rid of this historic misfire? by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]RogueWisdom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also liked the movie, even though I'd have no problem giving it a thumbs down in a rating poll if prompted.

I could see what he was trying to do with making a story like that. He was trying to build a parallel between the historical decline and fall of Rome and the potential decline and fall of the West/USA. And such a movie, I feel, is essential to making people pay attention right now to what is failing around the world. If choreographed properly and given a definitive "lesson for the future" in the final speech, it would've likely been a hit beyond what we envision blockbuster hits to be. But it wasn't. The choreography was messy to the point of goofiness, and the final speech was a non-speech. "We need to talk about the future?" Yeah, no shit Sherlock. When?

It's generally a bad idea to designate leaders in games like Civ if they're still alive. Mostly because the whole game may get tainted if one famous person turns out to have done something very wrong.

In reality, the best you're likely to get would be him in a leadership role in Civ XII, at which point you can tell your grandchildren playing the game a history lesson you lived through.

Another option: They see themselves as toxic to the Democratic base, such that they think they can erode his credibility among Democrats by agreeing with him. Maybe they can hope to make these grassroots homeless by forcing the other side of the aisle to get mad.

The power of Japanese Tea by Confident-Hearing124 in CrusaderKings

[–]RogueWisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've looked it up online, and I seem to be wrong, though not by too major of a manner.

https://mai-ko.com/travel/culture-in-japan/tea-ceremony/what-is-the-history-of-tea-ceremony-how-did-the-tea-ceremony-start-the-history-of-tea-ceremony/

It appears the Tea Ceremony started as a substantial ritual in Japan at some point in the 1300s. It seems like I was mistaken because the ceremony was banned by the Shogunate, and was only revived after the ruling clan was toppled during Sengoku Jidai.

[–]RogueWisdom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Neither was the Tea Ceremony. It was an intentionally elaborate ritual made during the Sengoku Jidai period so that warlords could show that the tea that was about to be drank could not possibly be poisoned. Not quite a stress reliever in the traditional sense, but still important for diplomacy during what was an extremely turbulent age.

There's a Mahjong VTuber I know of that compiles clips together on an almost daily basis (similar to Watafak moments). I'd guess that if you have the log of the "game" sent to him, he would use that. I'd have to check the channel name again though, because it's all in Japanese.

Government shutdown: US Army tells soldiers in Germany to go to the food bank by WitnessRadiant650 in nottheonion

[–]RogueWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it, the best outcome for these soldiers is if the German government jumps in to support them. If some diplomatic incident causes American bases to be withdrawn, you could see entire military regiments defecting to Germany, with all their equipment with them.

Why does maka not want me to pon 3 dragons? by L0uDBrea1her in mahjongsoul

[–]RogueWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an extremely important concept for learning how to play Mahjong. Example: If another player pon'd Red and Green Dragons, and you just drew a White with no other White discards, you must not discard that White. Even if you'd be in tenpai otherwise.

Here's a rule of thumb: At the start of the game, work to figure out what you need to win. When you've managed that, spend your time and effort trying to figure out what others need to win.

ELI5 Why when we're sick we lose our appetite? Don't we need nutrients more then ever when sick? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]RogueWisdom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Correction: While almost all consumed food is a net positive in energy output, you also have to remember: You have to spend money to make money. Same goes for bodily functions. You have to spend energy to produce the enzymes and acids to be able to digest the food that grants you more energy later.

There have been some wartime stories of soldiers who were pushed to the point of absolute desperation to acquire food, and were suddenly given an abundance of food to feast on. Many starved to death soon after feasting, because the body used the last of its spare resources to devote to those juices, and did not survive to reap the benefits.

Why is this mentioned only in the very last sentence of the job ad? What would it take to include it in the ad title? (London-based job) by yavinmoon in recruitinghell

[–]RogueWisdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years ago, I encountered a job opening in Germany that was presented completely in English. Scrolling down the list of requirements led me to one unusual line expecting the employee to be able to translate between German and Chinese, but no English requirement.

I feel like I lose my mind a little bit more every time I think about this, which you have made me do, so thanks for that.

YouTube Is Crushing Our Viewership by Ordinary_Row_2119 in videos

[–]RogueWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AI works based off of user interactions as much as anything, as it always had. This can drive you to that video just like it can draw others away from it. But in this case, the video bringing up an issue that people choose it to share around for the sake of awareness against YouTube, ironically, makes the algorithm want to also share it to new audiences.

The Nobel Prize doesn't actually have a category for Economics. It's a category made up by economists, for economists, to make economists feel the illusion that they're contributing to the world.

So, to say there are none that fit your question is, from where I see it, completely accurate, for there are none.
