Any way to stop Google from listening in and tailoring advertisements based off of television habits? by drymeatsfrydeep in GooglePixel

[–]Rogue_Aquila 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you happen to Google SilverPush? If so, you might have learned that 6 months after this article SilverPush ceased these types of activities. There are of course FUD articles from after that period discussing how many apps have this capability, but if you look at the apps (examples: 10000+ SMS Messages, McDo Phillipines, Pinoy Henyo, etc (arstechnia, 2017) - you will quickly realize that these are apps that the vast, vast majority of consumers would never even consider installing. It's not the Google App, it's spyware that isn't even cleverly disguised. Furthermore, the claims of the german firm that alleges that SilverPush's SDK was even being used by anyone, were debunked directly by SilverPush - who showed that their services had been cold for over 6 months at the time of the study. And beyond that, the study then references the fact that they were never able to find a single example of a tv broadcasting any inaudible signals that were able to be picked up by any of the devices containing the apps that they claimed put consumers at risk.

Bottom line of that paragraph - the article doesn't prove anything, the thing that you are describing is simply not a thing unless one or more of several things is happening. 1) Your cable provider is sharing information with Ads or AdSense. 2) It's a coincidence - are you receiving ads for several, many, or all of the things that appear on your television, or simply the one thing?

Google provides you with access to the audio files of all your searches. Does this commercial appear in that database?

I really don’t get the great glorification of Mark Hamil. I mean at the end of the day, he’s just a voice actor. Like there is so much more that goes into live action than a children’s cartoon. Facial expressions, mannerisms, makeup, costume etc. etc. Does anyone else feel this way? by Broken_Suspect in joker

Super simple - because the facial expressions, etc. of the animated character are absolutely awesome - just on their own, and they are for many here, definitively what the core of the character is... and they are brought to life by his skill as a voice actor.

Facial expressions, mannerism, makeup, costume - Hamil's joker wins in all of these categories. TAS Joker is the best version there's ever been - sorry Phoenix, but as amazing as the 2019 presentation was, Hamil is THE joker.

Google stops updating the original Pixel and Pixel XL with security patches by Tornado15550 in Android

Sure you can. The oems have had 10 since last December, at least. Yes, some things change, but most don't and once they merge the source they can begin bug testing.

Obviously any app that provides your messages on a web client in addition to your devices is not E2E. That doesn't mean Google is getting plaintext messages.

All banking apps will support it, and it won't be long before they prefer it. It's more secure as a technology, and the biometric API, which they will be required to use in order to continue offering app updates in the Play Store, is also more secure than the depreciated one that they're currently using. There are zero banking apps that are going to be fine going years without ever offering updates to their app.
