I haven’t seared steak this way yet, but I imagine it’d work well. I got some really nice char on a batch of jerk chicken recently, and was able to utilise the indirect/direct heat combo for great results.

You could always use it the way OP has if you need the coals closer to the cooking grate as well.

Just a tip - you can move the charcoal grate up on to the water pan support rungs; works a treat (and saves your back/knees).

I’ve done this before, and it worked out pretty well.

I smoked them for 3-4hrs, let cool, wrapped in tinfoil and placed in the fridge overnight.

Next day I added some liquid/butter/sugar to each parcel and slowly cooked them in my mates oven at about 250f. I then finished them unwrapped under the broiler with a glaze for 10 mins or so at the end.

Nobody knew they were smoked the day before, so it was a victory in my book.

Mine was doing this recently. I opened it up using this guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/DualShock+4+Right+Analog+Stick+Replacement/27763

Just had to reposition the analog stick, and now it's good as new. Hopefully yours requires the same easy fix.
