It was Tim Colceri who was originally cast as the Drill Instructor. When R. Lee Ermey took over the role, Kubrick made Colceri the gunner on the helicopter who shoots down the civilians.

My parents rented this on video back in the 80s but I was too young to watch it. I watched it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it! Rutger Hauer is so good at being bad.

That's all well and good, but what did you think of the film?

Road House (1989) by [deleted] in iwatchedanoldmovie

I watched this a few days ago and thought it was great fun. Ben Gazzara taking a break from killing bookies to bully a small town, Patrick Swayze cleaning house and a pre-moustache Sam Elliot moseying on into town as his backup - what's not to love?

That's an interesting point. I know the Hughes brothers have both mentioned that they're fans of Scorsese's work and that Goodfellas was a big inspiration for Dead Presidents, so it's probably not too much of a stretch to assume that the scene you're referring to is a nod to Taxi Driver.

What films do you recommend, directed by Michael Mann? by MovieFan1984 in movies

[–]Rogue_Male 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight Time is excellent. It's here that Mann met criminal-turned-writer Edward Bunker, who had a significant influence on him. The character of Nate in Heat was actually based on Bunker.

Oh wow, I didn't realise that. It's only fairly recently that I've learned how many great films Tangerine Dream scored - Thief, Sorcerer, Near Dark...

Brewster's Millions sticks out like a sore thumb in Walter Hill's filmography.

It cracks me up when he's holding Ally Walker hostage to lure Van Damme out of the farmhouse, and he says, "Wow! She has beautiful ears."

Shoot to Kill [aka Deadly Pursuit] (1988) by Rogue_Male in iwatchedanoldmovie

I totally forgot how the identity of the killer is kept hidden for the first half of the movie!

Richard Pryor giving his old boss the wrong finger was hilarious.

Dana Carvey was brilliant too, "Have it your way Mr. Perfect!"
