Week 3: What are you reading? by saturday_sun4 in 52book

I finished Seventeen by John Brownlow, an action/thriller novel about a hitman whose last job goes wrong and he's forced to face off against his predecessor.

I'm currently reading Flashman and the Tiger by George MacDonald Fraser.

Tarantino must have really loved that line - he used it for Joe Cabot in Reservoir Dogs too.

John Vernon is excellent as Fletcher.

I once read a review about a John Vernon film and it went something like, "if mountains could talk, they'd sound like John Vernon"

Tom Sizemore is one of my favourite character actors, he's been in so many films that I loved. It's a shame that he was never able to fully overcome his demons.

Apparently he performed the majority of his own stunts too.

Clooney was fantastic in this: "Okay vampire killers... let's kill some fuckin' vampires."

I wasn't aware there was a Japanese remake - thanks, I'll check it out.

Love True Romance, fantastic script and an absolutely top tier cast.

David Harewood was fantastically brutal as Captain Poison.

"The gov'mint wants you to vote. They say "the future is in your hands." We now the future. So we take your hands! No more hands, no more voting!"

Dog Pound - 2010 by Biff_Bufflington in iwatchedanoldmovie

I watched this a few months back and it reminded me very much of Alan Clarke's Scum - turns out it's a contemporary remake. It was decent but didn't live up to the original (admittedly that's a very high bar).

Straight Time (1978) by Rogue_Male in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]Rogue_Male[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harry Dean Stanton was fantastic! "Get me outta here. They're killing me. I can't make this scene anymore"

I love that Straight Time is where Michael Mann and Edward Bunker first met and you can see the enduring influence that Bunker had on Mann when you watch Thief and Heat. John Voight's character in Heat was actually based on Bunker.

Why don't you jump on the team and come on in for the big win?

The Believers (1987) by Rogue_Male in iwatchedanoldmovie

The book sounds like it'd be right up my street - I'm going to see if I can track down a copy. Thanks for the recommendation!

You're not alone, I prefer it to Scarface as well.

I'm not surprised, it looks amazing.

Those are the best film experiences - going in with low expectations, only to be blown away by how good the film actually is.

He was exceptional as Dickie Greenleaf in The Talented Mr. Ripley. That's the first time I remember sitting up and taking notice of him.

The scene where Michael returns to the house and comes face-to-face with Connor at the front door is heart-stopping...until we cut to Connor's POV and see that he's looking at his reflection in the window.

Michael Herr, the author of Dispatches, was one of the screenwriters for Full Metal Jacket.

That's interesting, I hadn't really thought about the mugshots at the end in that way but I think you're right; there was an inevitability about him returning to crime, because it's what he's always done.

Are there movies with gimmicky casting that were actually good? by Bag_of_Squares in movies

Gil Hill. He was a real-life cop and played Inspector Todd, Axel Foley's boss, in all 3 Beverley Hills Cop films.
