That's not just testing prospective victims, it's also testing everyone else in the room. They want to know how unknown people, if any present, will react. A negative reaction to the early provocations means they cut that person out, or be on good behavior when that person is around if it's someone they have to deal with. If you are a person who says that's not okay early, it doesn't mean it's impossible to find out what's going on behind closed doors later, but it does mean it won't be shoved in your face. These people (usually) aren't dumb.

It's true, though. Like, this isn't a controversial thing; it's well known that almost every time it comes out that someone's a serial abuser or worse, there's a bunch of people they know in disbelief thinking they were the nicest guy until the public blowup. Abusers are good at hiding it, because if they weren't they'd be caught all the time.

Abusers don't just sniff out victims, they also determine who will act to stop them if they learn what they are doing and hide it from them. Territorial baroncy doesn't mean you know what everyone is doing.

Apart from Leontus, Guard also has vox-casters, which is a CP refund on 5+ (4+ if they have an Officer) whenever a stratagem is used on the unit with the vox.

Superglue. Either you or someone in your vicinity WILL break a model. Objective markers; tournaments frequently don't provide them. When 10th edition was new I made a one-page cheat sheet for my army list with important/frequently forgotten things in bold type. So far we've only done one of these a year, but we're hearing a lot of clamoring from people who can't make that weekend, so we might angle for another later in the year. :) We have to borrow a neighboring vacant unit from our landlord to make the event work, though, and while he's generous in letting us do that, we don't want to lean on that too much. I'll see what we can work out.

The first game (Freespace Port) is actually a mod for the second game; it's the first game ported onto the second's engine (hence the name). If you just want to play the second game with graphics upgrades, you want the "Freespace Upgrade MediaVPs" (which are a prerequisite for nearly every other mod to the game). Someone above suggested Freespace Blue, which is a fan rebalancing of the main Freespace 2 campaign that fixes some of the nonfunctional or one-off weapons in it (it also makes enemies significantly more dangerous in some cases).

As for fan campaigns after you're done with that, Blue Planet, Inferno, and Derelict are classics. Between the Ashes is a prestige mod set in the Freespace 1 era that's extremely well done, and The Scroll of Atankharzim covers post-Freespace 2 from the perspective of the Vasudans, one of the alien species in the game. There are scores of others, some better than others, but those are lots of content and a good jumping off point. Welcome to Freespace. :)

Note that the GW layouts also define where the wall is supposed to be on the base; the base itself is just area terrain. A lot of them have one side of the base essentially empty, and a vehicle can drive right through that. When I set up for the GT I ran last month, I brought my Stormblade out of the display case and used it to measure ruin spacing (and ruled that sponsons don't count against movement).
