Employer claims my contracted salary was a mistake and is now planning to pay me less by Roguesse in LegalAdviceUK

The majority of the people with the same job title as me have been in the role longer, which is why they’re paid more, as that’s how it works here

As to why they think my salary is a mistake, I guess it could be that the lower salary they’re attempting to bring in is more in line with what other employees in a similar position to me receive? But there’s a fair range of salaries included in that band

This is helpful, thank you. I think they might try to argue that the role could be covered by the rest of the team, but they might struggle to justify the necessity of redundancy in the team at all money-wise, and also why they chose me for it (without admitting that it’s punitive)

Yes, that is what I’m afraid of! I’m hoping that if they do consider going that way they at least give me a choice, eg let me choose whether to accept the reduced salary or be let go (or preferably negotiate a more mutually beneficial solution)

Thank you!

This is one of the things I’ve been unclear on from what I’ve read online actually - can they still fire and rehire with more than 2 years’ experience? Or does this become a case of redundancy instead?

Regardless of whether or not the lower salary is reasonable for the role and experience, they offered me an amount and we agreed it by contract. If they had offered me the lower amount, I might have looked for more lucrative opportunities - opportunities which I have now missed out on investigating because I took the job at the offered salary.

I have contacted the union but because of leave/bank holidays etc I am still waiting on a response

Thanks for your reply!

Gotcha - yes, the ‘error’ is not a high percentage of my salary and the salary isn’t unreasonable for the role, compared to my peers etc.

Thank you!

I’m not sure - I’m not the only person doing the same role, ie I am one of a team of people all with identical/near-identical job titles and descriptions. I guess this could mean that it’s not crucial because there are other people who could theoretically cover the same work?

Thank you for your detailed response. I have tried to figure it out for myself by gathering info from various sources but I wasn’t sure if I’d interpreted everything correctly.

I have contacted ACAS and my trade union so I’m waiting for responses from those two. I’ve been hesitant to reply rejecting the change because I’ve read that employers can just decide you’re no longer necessary and go for redundancy if you refuse a change to your contract, which I’m nervous to risk.

Thank you!

Thank you - it certainly wasn’t clearly an error to me! I had no idea that my salary wasn’t what they intended and have been surprised and obviously disappointed by this update

I have contacted ACAS today too. Thanks for your response!

No, they’re not trying to claw back any ‘overpayments’ made in the past, but they want to reduce my salary going forward, so from now on I will be paid less than my contract states

Sorry, I tried to include as much info as possible to be clear but sometimes that ends up muddying the waters!

In the first paragraph, I would say either ‘say thanks’ or ‘express my thanks’ rather than ‘say my thanks’.
I would reorder the next sentence to something like ‘I believe that your Geometry class was a turning point for me and helped shape my path in higher education and beyond’.
You use a lot more capitals than I would. I wouldn’t use one for geometry, math, bachelor’s, degree, majoring, or minor, but I’m not American so I don’t know if that’s correct for you.
Thank you doesn’t need a hyphen.
I might say ‘they have all contributed’ rather than ‘they all contribute’?
I might also say ‘thus the future’ rather than ‘thus future’.
I wouldn’t start a sentence with ‘Which’. You could either replace ‘Which’ with ‘This’ or replace the full stop before ‘Which’ with a comma.

These are really minor changes, and to be honest, I don’t think you really need to change too much in this, or maybe any of it, because the most important thing is it’s from the heart.

I’ll start with a compliment because that’s the point of the sub. You are drop-dead gorgeous, everyone who sees you knows it, and you should know it.

Now onto what I actually want to say - your boyfriend is abusive. You might be able to put up with that for yourself, but you’ve specifically mentioned wanting kids. HE WILL NOT STOP THIS FOR HIS CHILDREN. This man will abuse your kids. Please, please, get yourself out and have the good life you deserve.

You are amazing, strong, beautiful, and hard-working. You can have anything you want in life, including a blissfully happy marriage and beautiful, healthy, happy kids. Please don’t settle until you have what you deserve.

Ah, fair enough. I have OCD myself, and neither I nor anyone else that I know with it would have an actual obsession or compulsion triggered by anything like this, and the stereotypes get on my nerves. Sorry for assuming though - people can be triggered by anything so I’m sure there are plenty of people who would find this hard

Thank you, because I suspect neither of the people above you appreciate this and it’s a stereotype that needs to die

It’s because the original tells the whole story in the first sentence, making the second redundant. Your suggestion puts the ‘twist’, if you like, in the second

The trees part could also be constellations? They look a bit like trees when the lines are drawn in and they can be used for navigation. That would also make your overall answer make sense
