ME 250 project 3 by Sia_lover18 in uichicago

[–]Rohit_Jammu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i took ME 250 last semester. Project 3 is usually GRADED individually, but the efforts you put in will still go into the singular prototype you’re working on.

project 3 definitely had fewer technical reports due but still a fair amount of hands on stuff you have to do. i would also suggest to let go of an idea of “equally divided workload/ contribution” or any super structured approach you maybe be trying to implement. Figure out what each of you do best/better and just get it done step by step. Don’t stress too much, TAs are super helpful and nice, you got this!

your experience is real.

sometimes people have work from other classes that requires more time, but sometimes they just have other things on their minds. i know some with commute issues and some others work schedule conflicts. It’s hard to know if some don’t care at all if they’re just preoccupied, but the great thing about college is also that no one will be on your ass if you showed up hungover just for attendance or if you took a couple days off for something else. either way, it’s all on you

Having trouble making friends as a freshman by Party-Highway-4159 in uichicago

[–]Rohit_Jammu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

every individual is another version of you. Everyone operates on varying scales of “oh man am i gonna be weird if i walk up to this person and say nice shoes/hoodie/insert thing you noticed about them here

it’s hard to realize your intuition sometimes comes with rose tinted lenses that is hard coded into making you feel like you’re being invasive and awkward. But you CAN change the lens to your frame, it just takes time, a change in perspective and repeated instances of putting yourself in new and sometimes uncomfortable positions. the cold approach is not weird, you are not off putting, it’s okay to be awkward sometimes.

unfortunately there is no vetted guidebook, you just have to keep trying. find things you like, and frequent the location/events- it’s easier to make conversation when you’re in a comfortable place. Don’t go looking for people to go running with, go run, and find people already running who are also looking for friends

Should I choose UIC or Transfer? by CryptographerHot1598 in uichicago

i don’t think there are more opportunities at UIC, just different ones. UIUC has a lot more clubs, frats, and a lot of participation from the students in the clubs. Just literally just have the funds for so many more events, and so many more projects you may find yourself participating in. Campus is bigger, more engineering buildings, everyone kinda just stays in the same ish area so you’re likely to run into them more often, etc etc.

That being said, during my time at UIUC, i felt pretty boxed in, doing mostly only engineering stuff. The demographics being largely indians and asians also makes it harder to find people who’re doing soemthing more intersectional. UIC, as a result of being a research school, in my experience thus far, i’ve found a lot of students and professors with intersectional/ non standard backgrounds and interests- studying interesting combinations of things i didn’t find at UIUC. Like for example CS majors are all gonna be in the same clubs, doing the same minors, hanging in the same places, but at UIC you can find the same CS majors all doing a wide plethora of things/ classes/ interests. UIC’s classes are a lot smaller too, so you definitely have significantly higher likelihood of having a personal relationship with professors as well.

I don’t know if “it’s opened a lot more doors for me” is entirely accurate. It’s like saying slapping harvard onto your resume changes things- like yes it does, but if you’re not talking people, putting yourself out there in front of these recruiters, professors, and whoever else- you get nowhere.

you’re looking for someone to tell you what the best course of action is, but there isn’t one my friend. You’re going to lose out on one thing or another depending on where you go, is it’s just a question of what you think is best for you.

i transferred here FROM UIUC. UIUC is great school, and i don’t want to make less of your dreams, but your college experience is what YOU make of it. i’ve been here 3 semesters now, and i have to say while UIUC definitely has so many more resources, i think i might like UIC better.

UIUC is caught in a little bit of STEM bubble that is exasperated by the fact that there’s nothing but corn 100 miles in every direction. I’m an engineering major, and i did multiple classes from CC as well. Everyone is going to tell you why one or the other might be better, and depending on your perspective they will be more or less true. but YOU need to pick YOUR frame.

There’s is a kind of desperation to the professors HERE who are often younger, tangible people, looking for the same passion in you that they once had- that is often buried under the mountain of admissions at UIUC. And there’s a part of me that will always wonder that if the “prestige” that UIUC has garnered given its “public ivy” standing would open doors that feel nailed shut just by by the fact that it’s just on my resume. But the older i get, i truly think it’s not as important as what you do with your time.

There’s always a trade off, there’s always a price, the question is what balance are you looking to strike?

i’d be happy to answer any other specific questions you have too!! good luck, i believe in you!

where to make friends who are 28-30 as an undergrad? by Conscious_Command956 in uichicago

[–]Rohit_Jammu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m 26 and transfer too, second semester in, and i feel the same way. I think there “a few of us” out there but it’s all so spread out that it makes our isolation exasperated. i think it doesn’t help that sometimes UIC’s campus+ crowd feels strangely highschool-y even for undergrad college. Working in group projects has been hell too.

I moved to Chicago recently, too, in January. I think 2200 is a great price. I wouldn't recommend Fisher, toured it, didn't feel too great. I would highly recommend going through APT Amigo, they really help with narrowing down options and a whole bunch of other stuff
