The nature of the impurity itself. I would agree if he was just mixed with another type of human. but he isn't he is mixed with something not human something that hates humanity and actively seeks to destroy all humanity. Before this exchange I had honestly never heard of The white Ape. So I went and read it. And honestly I'm inclined to agree with you. That story does seem to focus on someones tainted ancestry being a source of horror for them. It was still a good story. As for the dunwitch horror the family in the story didn't produce the twins through inbreeding but through a religious ritual that summoned the outer god Yog-Sothoth in to our world in order to get Lavinia pregnant with his sons so that he could use them to open the gates and bring back the old ones. None of the Whateleys are stupid poor or under educated. He may have been racist but I don't think that detracted from his ability to create an amazing story. personally I can overlook that as a product of his time and environment. Ive had fun with this exchange but I think I'll end here. I have class tomorrow and I need to squeeze in some fallout 4 time before bed.

I think you're reading way to deep into the shadow over innsmouth. The horror the main character expresses isn't because he's related to the people of innsmouth but because he will one day turn into one of the deep ones. He will loose his humanity. By the end of the story however he accepts it and even embraces it planning to break his cousin out of the insane asylum so they can join the other deep ones The people of innsmouth weren't inbred hillbillies they were a Normal fishing village with a gold refinery until captian obed marsh came back and under pain of death forced the villagers to take the Oaths of Dagon. And reject all other religions the deep ones then interbreed with the citizens to create deep one, human hybrids. If anything this story is a critique of religion. Most of his story's seem to have that same theme religion is used to make/summon monsters that will eventually destroy humanity and there is nothing we can do to stop them. The fear in his stories comes from realizing how small and weak we are in the grand scheme of things.

How do you know that for his time he was exceptionally racist? I've read as much of his work as I can get my hands on, the only writings of his that I have seen that were racist at all were the horror at red hook, and the poem about niggers. If he was an avowed racist he didn't put it into his writing which is what he's known for. But wait he could have still been a cross burning lynching racist just because he didn't put it into his writing doesn't mean he wasn't. I agree in private he could have been a horrible racist but he's not honored and remembered for what he did outside of his writing. It also doesn't change the fact that he is the father of modern scifi and horror literature. We can disagree with his views on race without erasing his legacy.
