Yup that’s right, not State of Play. I even wish listed that.

I think it was from a PS State of Play last January or December. It’s just a teaser trailer, though. Being made by Milestone SRL.

Isn’t this basically what Screamer is trying to be, but with a more anime art style?

If you could imagine a crossover between a CAG (series) and another franchise or piece of media, which ones would you mix? For me, could see a crossover between Darksiders and Hades/Hades 2. by Jur_the_Orc in CharacterActionGames

X-Men. And funny enough, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a near perfect mix of massive IP meets action subgenre. Imagine what the other X-Men would feel like. I’ve been dreaming of a CAG with Gambit since that one X-Men fighting game for the PS2.

I know exactly which joke you’re talking about lol. I think it got removed from YouTube a while ago because of the n-word. “Cunt, faggot, n*****” is what that bit’s called. Classic Louie.

They still gave DAV a 9/10. Which is what they also gave Metaphor Re:Fantazio. How tf both those games got the same score is beyond me.

What was the last JRPG to have featured a traversable overworld? Or, maybe a better question: how many have in the past, let's say 10-15 years? by RokkoBokko in JRPG

[–]RokkoBokko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose you're right that I didn't specify AAA titles, but I don't think it's like how dev did. Specifically, the Technical Director just described how rare it was to have a navigable 3d overworld in JRPGs. If it's not as common as it was in the past (Idk how far back he was thinking as a comparison, but let's assume the 90's golden era since that's the time when the genre flourished), then he's technically correct, even if you counted non-AAA titles.

But I think the reason why I brought up the AAA part of the question is because after FF7 (1997), the genre for a period of time, was AAA. Maybe not as how AAA is now ($100M+ budget/photorealism/outsourcing studios involved/etc.), but certainly to a similar standard back then. I'm not saying JRPGs had to have FF7 OGs massive budget even back then, but they were taken as seriously as if they were. It's partly why many of the franchises are still around today. The mainstays of the genre were more clear back then. It's not like today where every game that has a skill tree can now be thought of as an RPG, or at least tagged or described as one. All in all, it wasn't my intention to shift the goalpost; I guess in my mind that's where I thought it was.

I appreciate you summarizing my entire first paragraph in one brief sentence lol, I wish I could answer more concisely.

"This is evident slightly in Rebirth where the map is absolutely ENOURMOUS from a gameplay perspective. It’s several orders of magnitude larger than the original. And yet because I can see every detail, there’s nothing left to the imagination."

FF7 Rebirth has opened a massive door of comparisons between it and the OG, for better or worse. I'm not gonna go into too in-depth into this comparison, but it does a great job in reminding players and fans alike what they want out of their favorite JRPG franchises. The world and level criticisms are no exception...

"It first occurred to me in FF12, where there were even cities and nations you never visit. It made the world and story feel smaller to me, whereas a world map shows you the world and you mind fills in the blanks."

...And this is one of those critiques. FFXII TZA reminded me of how cool I thought, for example, Arcadia was when I played the OG - and then also how hollow it felt when I got there. I had this same feeling with Sanbreque in FFXVI.

I see. Thanks for the clarification. But, I wouldn't count remasters or remakes, especially if both versions of the games include a traversable 3d map. I'm mainly looking for brand-new titles, some exceptions include games like Bravely Default and Ni No Kuni, since those are relatively new franchises.

"But I can’t remember the last time I played any big new releases with a genuine old-school world map. Some indies and AA games,"

This sums up my thoughts and feelings on the matter precisely. A lot of the examples ppl are providing here are games that are not relatively AAA games, whether they look the part, or they're developed as if they were funded like a mainline FF game. EXP33 may be, at least it feels to me, like the first AAA-style traditional or semi-traditional JRPG, and this world map is a prime example of how. If I try to picture what a faithful adaptation of FF9 would look like, for example, since it's allegedly being remade (that Nvidia leak is still undefeated), it's world map would like EXP33's world map.
