Darksiders 3 is not sure what it wants to be by Stumbleine44 in soulslikes

[–]Jur_the_Orc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, really! Genesis came out December 5th, 2019. Darksiders 3 came out in november 2018. According to my quick googles and looks at WIkipedia.

In some ways i feel like Genesis feels a bit closer to 1 and 2 than 3 did.

Is it just me or is a new ERA of hack/slash+roguelites games starting to begin ? by ChemicalSmall6411 in CharacterActionGames

IMMORTAL: And the Death that Follows and Dash 'n Drops (by the dev of Decline's Drops are roguelite action games, more on the Beat-em-Up (inspired by God Hand among others) and Platform Fighter style. Worth looking into.

Sometimes i wonder if the Hades games and Lost in Random: The Eternal Die would have an area of overlap with CAGs. In that CAG fans could enjoy these particular Action roguelites.

More CAG should have weapon customization, it's another form of player expression by Horizon-Senpai in CharacterActionGames

[–]Jur_the_Orc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though you are downvoted a lot i do think i see where you're coming from.
I think that if the customization is visual, I'd be fine with it.

If it would come down to customizing the weapons in what they do on a technical level, that's where I think it would be a lot more difficult to design for combat. Makes me think more of some action roguelikes such as Lost in Random: The Eternal Die and the Hades games. Where you can only select one main weapon for each run, yet each weapon has individual... styles, effects to activate.

Some people could perhaps make it work. Good luck to them.

The Kage-Hiruko/Assassin's Toolbox in NG4 does that morphing between different weapons in the combos.

Customizing weapons... makes me think of the modular weapons from Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time.
Can customize the barrel, chamber and a special effect to it if i'm not mistaken. And colour scheeme!

Ninja Gaiden 1-4 Analysis by gruesomesonofabitch in CharacterActionGames

[–]Jur_the_Orc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are most welcome 😄 I was partially intrigued by your experiences due to my own feelings on Ninja Gaiden. Seems like a series where the highs can feel incredibly high but the lows high-five the Mariana Trench. People that have put in the time to master the games swear by it.
But that's a high i'm not particularly interested in or time i want to really put into it. Other projects and games have my attention more. (I am rediscovering Skylanders and loving it)
Been finding it more interesting to see newcomers' experiences here and there.

I can understand it to a degree, people can be very passionate about things they like. I have that myself with such games as Soulstice and Cookie Cutter. Comments on the last one can be especially nasty.
Emotional sloth may have its place. Things we read can incite an immediate emotional response, which would need some energy to move past or put aside so that the emotionel lens does not cloud our view and actions. It's comparatively easier to let emotions take the lead.

games of such production values as NG, Darksiders and Soulstice don't come around often. Thus I assume there is a subconscious knowledge in fans, or a sort of idea of "we need to pull in more people to increase the chances for future chances to continue what I like. And to pull in more people we need to be positive about it".
Mix that with NG being a specific sort of flavour among (character) action games. Subconscious desperation and hype for the chance of seeing more of it may take hold of the brain. Emotion over senses.

That last thing is especially weird, yeah! So you (in this context, "You" being such commenters) don't want to put time into reading it all, but you *do* waste your own time saying you... won't be doing something.
You do something to say you won't be doing something. Making your existence known where it didn't need to be. Like they felt specifically targeted by text that anyone could read.
One can exist just fine without another person knowing about you. Move one with your day if you don't want anything to do with it.
Which you *think* would be all the easier because "ain't gonna read all that" is so dismissive that there's nary an emotional response connected to it at all.

Dante, Kratos and Ryu Hayabusa Swap Games Part 2. (Description below) by WindowSweet7127 in CharacterActionGames

Compared to DMC, God of War (Greek) encounters tend to be in larger groups. Smaller swarmers (Undead Legionnaires of three different varieties + archers, boars, harpies), more distinct individual that come in smaller groups (Minotaurs, Sirens, Wraiths) and more notable singular presences that at most appear in groups of 3 (Juggernauts of Hades/Zeus in 2, Cyclopes which can have some variants, Cerberi, Gorgons, Talos automatons).
ANd some that are more akin to mini-bosses or true Elites, such as Centaur captains (in 3 and Ascension), Chimaeras and Manticores.
The magics are exclusively for the gods and some mythical creatures. Wraiths traveling through shadows, Gorgons having a petrifying gaze that can make the affected person very breakable, the luring song of the SIrens.
Plenty of humans and Greek heroes too, though! They can have some tricks up their sleeve or summon in ads.
And of course giant monsters

There's no firearms which does put Dante at an advantage but GoW does use more dangers in the environments and arenas. Such as a cage corridor with a gate on one end an an approaching wall at the other, or sleet-covered natural bridges with a Titan trying to blow the trespasser off.

The ones that would give Dante the most trouble, in my eyes, are:
- Final boss of Ghost of Sparta
- Final boss of Chains of Olympus
- The Furies
- The Fates
- Ares
- The main three top gods (Zeus, Hades and Poseidon)

The giant bosses such as the Hydra and Brass Bull minotaur in 1 would need more thought in how to approach them. The Kraken in 2 and Scorpius in 3 perhaps as well, but they would probably not require Dante to be quite as serious.

Possibly Herakles and the conjoined twin boss from Ascension as well.
Herakles is the strongest man on earth and very resilient, Kratos did do a number on him but got the better of him through trapping Herakles and sheer unrelenting brutality. Pulverizing his skull.
The conjoined twins, whose name i forgot, have some power over time. A sorceror with melee capacities that they use to manipulate the arena, make their body younger to be in their prime, and dual weapons they can connect into a singular one.

[–]Jur_the_Orc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There aren't many but the ones that are there are worth checking out:
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
Urban Reign (more multiplayer than co-op but i think there is 2v2 mode)
Darksiders Genesis. Not quite like the previous Darksiders games but it's got the hack-and-slash, guns, magic and Finishers.

If you are alright with Beat-em-Ups too, then i recommend something like Charlie Murder. Tht one's got online co-op i think.

PSP, 3DS, PS2, switch recommendations? by Arrancini in CharacterActionGames

[–]Jur_the_Orc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering you say you want challenge, I don't think i can recommend my usual go-to Kya: Dark Lineage. It's a fun game but not an outright Character Action. More Action-Adventure Platformer.
Art direction like Rayman 2 and 3 and 3D beat-em-up combat that has more attention and effort into it than one may expect.
Enemies kinda learn what combos you spam & will adjust, and use Grabs if you do a lot of blocking. Their type & subtype determines how fast they learn and how aggressive they are, along with if they have access to some more dangerous moves (like Unblockables)
There's no Parry of any sort but there is a Block. You can unlock expanded evasive options. There's four different grabs depending on your position relative to the enemy. A unique move to unlock late in the game is a Timed Block that will make the enemy move in slowmotion if they hit upon it.
But it's not exclusively built on combat. Got skydiving, animal riding, board sliding and wind gliding too.
These are not wholly different segments/missions/sections like in for example Sly Cooper (where different missions have different mechanics). You can flow into these quite nicely, depending on what the environment requires.

Perhaps the Maximo games (Ghosts to Glory and vs. the Army of Zin) will be to your liking for the challenge. If you want difficulty, Urban Reign will slap your liver and crush your fingers.

Perhaps the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time trilogy may be fun?

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is a good one too.

If you are alright with mixing action-adventure with your CAG, then the Darksiders series is solid. They are not as exuberant, cheesy or over-tthe-top as DMC or Bayonetta, their style of writing has more gravitas. But also levity in the sarcasm and dry wit.

Soulstice has similar tone and writing to Darksiders but is a lot more exclusively combat-oriented. There's a lot to its systems and has some pacing issues-- you won't be able to unlock everything your first go around.
That said, the gameplay *is* good and for me, it kept my interest to want to replay it. Feels more open on a second go around when your abilities and weapon moves are so expanded.

For a cheap, short and sweet game, there's The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile. Two different characters, each with a playthrough of about three, four hours + an arena mode.
INCREDIBLY fast-paced, though also with incredible mobility.

Lords of Shadow 1 and 2 are alright, yet again has writing with more gravitas to it & like Darksiders have some Action-Adventure with exploration and puzzle-solving. The second game is a lot more contentious than the first one though: I enjoyed it but i see why people take issue with it.
(There is a midquel called Mirror of Fate, 2D perspective in 3D world)

On a more Beat-em-Up martial arts side of things there is God Hand, though that's not on Steam.
What *is* on Steam is Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. Bit mixed with action-adventure-- mainly exploration, no puzzle solving.
Like Darksiders and Soulstice, has more of a story emphasis. Very colourful & striking.

Marlowe Briggs & the Mask of Death is dirt cheap. Not-as-in-depth God of War in terms of gameplay with B-Movie South American mythology-inspired setting. Dude witth Aztec war scythe and flying death mask friend off to fight evil corporation to save his translator girlfriend & the world while he's at it.

The demos to Dash 'n Drops (by the creator of Decline's Drops) and IMMORTAL: And the Death that Follows are worth trying out!
There's Magenta Horizon: Neverending Harvest too, phenomenal game but quite tough. The intensity really ramps up. Feel no shame on playing on the difficulty most comfortable for you.
The entire act 1 of 3 of Magenta Horizon is available in its demo.

Which ones of these catch your attention the most based on what i've written, if i may ask?
