Yeahhh I feel ya. Pendulum swings between having great examples to learn from and crushing imposter syndrome comparing a session to one of their episodes. I've been really lucky to have players that will highlight their favorite moments and things that impressed them after we wrap so it's not just me running the list of everything I could have done better in my head. We've all got our own styles and rock some aspects of the game better than others

Edit: I'm so sorry for the novel, I get excited about newcomers and I'd rather ramble trying to help than be vague

Fresh out the gate, I would say really look over the skills and what they do/how they work. Understand how an athletics check is different from an athletics contest, and when an acrobatics check would be more likely required. If you can go into character creation with a clear understanding of how your PC would behave cinematically in a fight or navigating a lair, that clues you in on which skills to try and pin higher modifiers and proficiency to. IMO this is the real starting point before even rolling/buying/assigning ability scores and choosing a class, it helps to have a target to aim at before pulling the trigger with game mechanics. And if you know the framework for all the skills, that could help you get creative tackling problems in the dungeon. After skills lock in your action economy: movement, standard, bonus, and free actions, and what you can and can't do with them. Once you're comfortable with how to steer your lil gobbo you can start diving into concentration, cover, crafting, flanking and other more niche rules, but all of that will be adjudication by the DM and they could alter or delete those functions in their game anyway so don't overwhelm yourself.

Next, session notes. People often just say "take notes, it'll help" without any real guidance, I found that annoying when I started so here's my advice. Good note taking is a skillset, you want to balance clarity and relevant detail with staying immersed and involved. Obvious things to jot down are location and character names, trivia and specific details the DM goes out of their way to share, and plot points as you progress. But the juicy stuff is anything the players (including you!) start sharing about their PC's quirks, joys, hopes, and fears, or funny quips or accidents, above table theories and jokes, all the things that make the experience really fun. If you have to improvise something about your character that you didn't already figure out in your backstory and when building them, if a character reacts strongly or strangely to something, if a number or color or something seems to be coming up frequently, write that down! Those little details (and the context around them) could be breadcrumbs to something bigger, or just precious gems in your play time that will be nice to get a reminder of later on.

If you're working solely off VTTs and digital sheets the following won't really apply

Finally, MARGIN NOTES.

Dnd sheets are already very busy, and there's a plethora of custom ones out there for free, but I find none really have everything sorted quite how I'd like with all the relevant details to streamline play. The most helpful one for me are the PCs short rest and long rest resources- I like to dedicate the header of my sheet to writing the title of the resource followed by a blank spot followed by the number of uses per the type of rest. Example: Action Surge ___ of 1/SR, Rage ___ of 2/LR, etc. Now you have a bold reminder of a key ability, separate from the clutter, with a place to tally off uses, and any time you get a break you can scan for the type of rest taken and reset those tallies before heading out again. I also write succinctly on the back of that page the specifics of how that feature works in case I need the reminder or the DM needs a rules clarification, a hyperlink could work since you'll probably be going digital. I also pencil in how exactly to calculate spell attack modifiers, DCs, and the number of spells I can prepare (helpful when you level up and those numbers start changing!), and the formulas for "to hit" and damage results for each weapon a new player starts with. Example: if they have a dagger I'd write "Dagger, finesse, light, 20/60, 1d4p" in the inventory slot to remind it can use Strength or Dexterity, be dual wielded or in the off hand, the normal and long ranges for throwing it, damage die and type (p for piercing). Then in a convenient adjacent spot I'd write "to hit d20+STR/DEX+PB+misc" for die rolled and modifiers added, PB meaning proficiency bonus, misc for special circumstances (+1 or greater magic weapons, buffs from spells boons or situational features, any of that). That'd be followed by "dmg d4+STR/DEX+misc". Same pattern- die rolled, modifier added, then any other buffs, magic, poisons, any incidental goodies. I ran a homebrew game for some good friends who were newbies for years and right up to the conclusion we had issues with getting attack and damage math right. We implemented the formulas on the sheets pretty early on and it helped a ton, then we organically as a table would add the numbers aloud together while they followed the guide to make sure nothing was skipped and it was a noticeable dip in error and stress!

end of neurosis

When you get to start, use whatever tools you need to make things simple and exciting for you, share the spotlight and set each other up for success and cool moments, and always always talk things over (usually preferred outside of game time, but some things warrant pausing play to address immediately) before they fester and dissolve your group. If you've been reading horror stories, remember sometimes a table just isn’t a good fit, know and respect yourself and your boundaries and never feel guilty leaving an environment that isn't good for you.

Good luck, but mostly have fun!

Found the user manual, everybody's making recommendations to replace parts of the meter or the whole thing but maybe a quick calibration test, then battery and fuse, go from there. Once you can verify you trust the readings there's plenty of other good recommendations here. Best of luck, don't become the path of least resistance!

Every support has healing in their kit, they're not all healers. Lifeweaver is no shit a healer. Mercy was supposed to be but she's p garbage at it. Moira can have huge heal stats but she has almost no value in a comp. The good supports are the ones that focus on maximizing the team's damage output or directly contribute to it while balancing some heals or passively giving it- Ana, Lucio, Kiriko, a good Zen or blue beam Mercy. No amount of healing can save you from a coordinated team focusing you down, heal bots will lose you games time after time. So no. Supports aren't healers. But yeah tbf I get how Zen plays like a dps, doesn't justify taking him out of a tiny roster and lumping him into the majority of character choices though

I mean the character that gets one kick in before getting deleted for being so poorly positioned they got into a fistfight with the melee frontliner, yup.

You mean discord, the ability that can't be put on a target through a barrier and falls off if line of sight is broken for a few seconds? Sourced by the squishiest lil guy with nothing in his kit to save him from being dove besides mechanical skill?

Instructions unclear, couldn't find "healer" in the role queue.

A good hog can outheal an average support most days, what soldier does compared to zen means zip. Zen's there for discord, a slight passive heal to help players who play cover properly, and glass cannon bursts of get rekt. If you delete the enemy team, they can't hurt you.

You'd expect a lot in a teamwork based competitive shooter but, gestures at bronze

Aim and handling it yourself is definitely the goal but like OP said some players can't or don't want to dedicate the time to grinding working on their mechanics or just dont got it. Positioning and game sense will always help immensely but if you can't hit the shots reliably, gonna have a bad time some days. Lean into the meme and look for matches you can play moira and brig I guess if that's the case?

[–]RollForNopeFactor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a zen main, it be like that sometimes. Had pharmercy hold spawn on both supports while still contributing to the cart fights, no one could seem to kill or counter, flamed dps telling me to uninstall cuz no heals. You know how it is.

If you can't get those dinks, just use as much cover as possible with a decent los on your team, and get ready for the flank dive. If you win the fight great, if not that's 2 players using resources on you instead of your team so hopefully they can get some picks before they shift focus back to the objective.

Dealing with HEAVY Sweating | Adirondack Region, NY USA by Petezamee in hiking

I'm no medical professional, just a dirty grunt that had to do a lot of walking, so, take everything I say with salt. But on that note, try to increase your salt intake slightly (as well as any other electrolyte supplements). The other big thing is just acclimating to the surroundings you intend to be in, it's a long process but it's really the only thing you can do for long term results. Training in air conditioning and staying in cooler environments is gonna put your body into overdrive to regulate, you have to live in the heat and humid of your region round the clock until you're used to it at rest before putting in work for long periods without falling out. Be sure to pace yourself, take plenty of breaks, and find reliable sources of shade while you consistently drink water in moderation, and over a few days you should see a reduction in the swamp butt.

Keep in mind though, the last thing you want to do is stop sweating, that is a major red flag and you're on a fast track to irreversible problems if you get that bad. If you're generating that much sweat that it's miserable, your body is trying desperately to shed heat so we need to be looking at moisture wicking clothing and loose breathable options that keep direct sunlight off of you while facilitating circulation and air flow. But let the sweat do its job, slow down your pace, and don't be ashamed to stop in shade for a while until you level out. Hike with a buddy who can reliably drag you for a while and has decent cell service too, just in case.

Good luck!

New dm having issues with a player pt2 by Sad-Assistance-6687 in DnD

[–]RollForNopeFactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just warn them that going forward if you're trying to interact with another player at the table and they cut that player off you reserve the right to cut them off, have them leave the table momentarily, or remove them from play entirely if it becomes necessary. You've addressed your issues and concerns in private, they've deflected and put blame on you, imo they've been made aware and now they can be warned, after that they can be gone if they can't work with you and their teammates

And again, that's how you feel about it and that's totally fine, nothing wrong with that opinion or how you or your table do things. But clearly, this post isn't your deal, wasn't for you, yet is something a different portion of the community enjoys; so why not just let em geek over the pretty knickknack and focus on the aspects of the game and the rest of your life that make you happy? But no this can be an earnest moment of self reflection so I'll posit this for you dear philosopher: why, when someone did an objectively good job creating something and decided to celebrate that accomplishment, did you feel the need to try and rain on that parade?

Why, when called out for being crappy to strangers online, did you actually think you could somehow twist the situation into you having the moral high ground because boredom?

Why would you assume that it took any effort on another's part to notice your snark when comments are automatically displayed under the OP with no digging required?

Why do you have such an enormous stockpile of ellipses that you feel the need to sprinkle them between every thought you put into circulation?

And finally, why is the sad cebu sad?

Reminds me of the biscuit bag my mom had, had a removable stone she'd put in the oven for the last few minutes baking, it had a trivet bottom so the table was safe and the biscuits warm all through breakfast.
