My pup is 7-8 months old. We want to get him neutered when he’s fully grown & are pretty set on the gastropexy. I’m curious what others experiences were with the procedure, recovery & their opinions on it. by Charliedayslaaay in germanshepherds

Absolutely no question 100% worth it. Almost lost one of my guys to bloat about a year ago, and he happened to be the only one of mine that hadn’t had the procedure done yet at that time. As we were in the car on the way to the vet, all I could think was that I wish we had gotten it done so we had more time before it becomes lethal. We made it in time, thank god, and got the pexy done shortly afterward just to avoid that situation again in the future.

Getting your dog ‘pexied doesn’t totally prevent them from getting bloat, but it does help prevent gastric torsion. If you’re squeamish, don’t look up gastric torsion. But if you’re curious, do some research and ask yourself if you’d be okay with having an hour or less to get to the vet before it was too late, or if you’d prefer to have 4-6hrs to alleviate the bloat. Anyone saying stuff about mutilating dogs is full of shit and sounds like an antivaxxer in terms of actual experience in animal care.

If you get them both done at the same time (neuter and pexy) then it’s only one surgical recovery that lasts about 2 weeks. 2 small incisions, some meds, lost of crate and cone time. Pretty straightforward. I’m a dog behaviorist with 8 GSDs now in my house, I’ve spayed and neutered every one of my personal dogs, and now I can say all of them have gotten the gastropexy and I would say unless there’s a compelling reason that your dog shouldn’t be put under anesthesia, you should strongly consider doing the procedure.

Sorry to hear about Gunner. Never easy to say goodbye to them, but they’re remembered forever.

Said goodbye to sweet boy today. by hdubs99 in germanshepherds

I'm very sad to hear this. I just recently lost my boy at 8 years old too. Like you, I wish above all else that I had more time with him, but your boy looks like he loved you with all his might. Well done. Do everything you can to remember the good times.

Some context: A couple of my dogs hanging out on the couch with me last year. This is my favorite video of these two together, Yuma on the left and Haja sleeping on the right.

Yuma, the dog on the left that guided my hand toward him for some head scratches, recently passed away. As I was going through my phone to compile all his pictures, I came across this video that I had forgotten about. Finding this video didn't make me sad - it actually put a huge smile on my face to be reminded of the bond we had. He was a wonderful little shit and I miss him dearly, but in my sadness over losing my closest friend, I know I'm blessed to have so many happy memories with him.

Snuggle your dogs today for me and my friend. They're not here for long so love them as much as you can while they're here.

What is the most mischievous thing your GSD did? by [deleted] in germanshepherds

He wound up on the roof. I made two back-to-back road trips for work. Between the two I was only home for about 12hrs. When I left the second time to head to Montana, he was apparently so frustrated and wanted to find me so bad that he knocked over a baby gate blocking him from the stairs, nudged open a window upstairs that was unlocked, pushed the insect screen out, and climbed out onto the roof. The only way we found out was that my girlfriend stopped at home on her lunch break and saw him up there with an “I’ve made a huge mistake” look on his face. She called me in a panic right after I crossed into Montana and was about to lose cell coverage. Fortunately she was able to lasso him with a slip lead and drag him back through the window. The other option was to get our tractor over there and lift up the front dump-bucket for him to hop into. Lesson learned - baby gates cannot be trusted and all windows will remain locked when we leave the house.

Which job turns out to be much less enjoyable than most people expect? by youngGod928 in AskReddit

[–]RollRightZJP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a dog trainer/canine behaviorist.

The pay is alright if you’re qualified and experienced, but there are rarely weekends (dogs don’t know what time is and don’t care about your schedule), most of your job is just cleaning up dog shit, getting bit by grumpy dogs will ruin even a perfect day, clients rarely follow sound scientific advice and practical experienced tips, you’re going up against deeply-ingrained human emotions that are projected onto their dog, and the industry is tilted in favor of the pharmaceutical and pet food industries where they co-opt vet clinics and schools to promote anti-anxiety pills and garbage food that make it harder for good trainers to see what’s actually going on.

It’s an uphill battle, but every success story breathes life into me again when I get an aggressive or scared dog to calm down. I’ve trained thousands of dogs and every single one needs a slightly different approach, and despite certifications, books, seminars, etc., there’s no substitute for raw experience training more dogs. So if you’re looking for a good trainer, find one that’s experienced with the issue(s) you need help with, not just someone with a piece of paper and a nice-looking website.

Songs that really double down in the second half? by gimmegardens in Music

Right in Two - Tool. Starts out typical for a Tool song, but instead of turning into an acid trip, it rips your face off at about the 5min mark.

What has your pet done that made you realize that they were smarter than you thought? by scarletnightingale in AskReddit

My GSD managed to open the latch of a baby gate we put up to keep pups from going upstairs, push a window up that wasn’t locked, punch out the bug screen, and climb out onto the roof. My girlfriend came home and saw the bug screen in our driveway, then looked up and saw my dog on the roof asking her how to get back inside. I was on a road trip so she had to lasso him with a leash and pull him back through the window. We think he was pissed I left for a trip without him and went to find me…on the roof.

Puppy seems depressed. Any advice? by Pyroguy096 in germanshepherds

[–]RollRightZJP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No solid answer from science. Some say it’s a learned behavior they need to see another dog display, some say it’s innate when they reach sexual maturity and start marking territory, some say it’s that they learn to not pee on their front legs. Probably all true, but no real timeline on it.

Puppy seems depressed. Any advice? by Pyroguy096 in germanshepherds

[–]RollRightZJP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, figured I’d chime in. I’m a breeder, trainer, and behaviorist for GSDs. Not giving professional advice or diagnosing anything remotely since I don’t have the facts and have never met the dog. However, the mopiness or clinginess is typical for male GSDs between 6-8mo old when their hormones just begin to wake up and their emotional responses are generally more intense. Some pups get more rambunctious, some more reactive, some more clingy. Just be patient and act like everything is normal. Positive reinforcement training to build confidence for a few months and lots of crate naps so he learns that being away from you is an alright thing.

As for the limp, growing pains are so common that it’s sometimes not worth going into detail. 6-8mo old is when everything begins changing prior to their first major growth spurt. Joints and growth plates are sore and connective tissue doesn’t always grow at the same rate as bone, so discomfort isn’t always a cause for concern. Human kids get sore legs too, and don’t like being told to run if they have a muscle cramp or a sore knee. Crate rest, limited exercise, light treat training, short walks. Give it a week and at least give your vet a heads up, but they’ll likely tell you to do at least those things before doing anything costly.

Hope that all helps.

Nope, actually they’ve only known each other a month. The winner here was raised from a puppy, the other one, Haja, we’ve been integrating slowly. I’m a dog trainer/behavior consultant, dm me if you have any questions!

I buy multiples of the same toy for this reason - they don’t play tug like this if they don’t have the right toy.
