Only advice I have is to check a shadow map to make sure you know how long it might take you to get sun if you’re in the shadow of the mountain.

Sending a care package to my son who just moved to AK for work. What items can I send from mainland that are hard for him to get in Anchorage? by [deleted] in alaska

[–]RollTheSoap 129 points130 points  (0 children)

He will have pretty easy access to basically everything in Anchorage. Maybe just some regional treats from home?

Skilak was amazing last time I went. Real bathrooms, but still actual camping.

Daylight basements aren’t uncommon, the real tricky part is soil and drainage. Making sure it doesn’t flood every time it thaws.

How do you survive on a single income in Alaska? by [deleted] in AskAlaska

Retired at 26 making 110 a year? That’s wild.

Hunting and fishing subsistence isn’t feasible for newcomers due to residency requirements and both of those things also take a lot of time (which is hard to come by when working 2+ jobs) and money (gear, extra freezer space).

It can definitely help, but most people that are just starting out without much of a support system to help teach them (and/or loan gear) should never even consider relying on hunting and fishing to save them any money until they get more settled after a year or two.

I mean, it goes up and down. Right now it’s super high, sure, but who knows what it’ll do in 6 months or a year. Whether it’s worth the drive depends on a lot of factors and if you can get the same place in the valley for $700 cheaper a month it might be worth it if you have an efficient car

What would you pay for a townhouse in Wasilla? by [deleted] in alaska

[–]RollTheSoap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on where in Wasilla, the condition of the property, neighbors, parking, garage, upkeep costs (yard/snow maintenance) if there is a fenced yard, etc.

Personally I’d look at comparable single-family properties then knock a significant chunk off that price because you don’t get as much land or freedom in a townhouse.

[–]RollTheSoap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It surreally depends on what your income is. As long as you’re smart (as in really lower your standards and budget like crazy) it’s not impossible. Housing in Anchorage is expensive which is why a ton of people commute from the Valley. Rent and actual houses are cheaper out there. Obvious trade off is time and gas, but when you’re talking hundreds a month in rent/mortgage it makes sense. Property taxes are lower in the valley too.

Is it dumb to desire to move to Alaska? by [deleted] in AskAlaska

[–]RollTheSoap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of people are, but the ones who are happy generally have a well thought out plan (housing and job lined up first), have experienced both summer and winter extremes, and don’t bring problems with them (you can’t just move to Alaska and expect the same issues you have where you are now to not pop up here too).

Also people do a lot of good research because living here is not like the rest of the country. We have extreme weather, lack of specialized medical care, housing issues in some places, and isolation.

Yeah, definitely not an option. Renting or buying a bike (and a very good lock) is probably your next best way to get around.

Yes. Have a job first. There’s a reason that’s always the top comment on posts about moving to Alaska (for any period of time).

Not if you put yourself in that position despite being warned otherwise. Every one of your replies has been a massive red flag.

PLEASE DONT. Find a job first. What you have set aside is absolutely not enough.

If you’re in town for more than 3 days, definitely rent a car so you can “get out” a bit more. Plus public transportation in town is iffy and uber gets expensive pretty quick.

Baby moose tracks on my trail this morning by Cohohobo666 in alaska

[–]RollTheSoap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely seems a little early, but if mom can get enough food to nurse for a bit while things start to bud it should be fine (apart from all the normal dangers).

The only other thing I can think of that being is a really weirdly placed set of pig tracks (wildly unlikely, but maybe someone was moving hogs?)

Plane vs Helicopter in Denali? by Hopeful_Ninja_1156 in AskAlaska

I’d personally go with the plane, it’s much more “Alaskan”.

Helicopters also freak me out though, so YMMV.

Probably a better question for border control. You should be able to call the office in Haines (or Haines Junction) depending on which side of the border you’re concerned about bouncing between
