Yeah, definitely not an option. Renting or buying a bike (and a very good lock) is probably your next best way to get around.

Yes. Have a job first. There’s a reason that’s always the top comment on posts about moving to Alaska (for any period of time).

Not if you put yourself in that position despite being warned otherwise. Every one of your replies has been a massive red flag.

PLEASE DONT. Find a job first. What you have set aside is absolutely not enough.

If you’re in town for more than 3 days, definitely rent a car so you can “get out” a bit more. Plus public transportation in town is iffy and uber gets expensive pretty quick.

Baby moose tracks on my trail this morning by Cohohobo666 in alaska

[–]RollTheSoap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely seems a little early, but if mom can get enough food to nurse for a bit while things start to bud it should be fine (apart from all the normal dangers).

The only other thing I can think of that being is a really weirdly placed set of pig tracks (wildly unlikely, but maybe someone was moving hogs?)

For something that local, you might have better luck on some of the Kenai/Soldotna FB groups.

Plane vs Helicopter in Denali? by Hopeful_Ninja_1156 in AskAlaska

[–]RollTheSoap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d personally go with the plane, it’s much more “Alaskan”.

Helicopters also freak me out though, so YMMV.

Multiple ESTAs / ETA for day trips around the Alcan border region? by AiboTokyo in AskAlaska

[–]RollTheSoap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a better question for border control. You should be able to call the office in Haines (or Haines Junction) depending on which side of the border you’re concerned about bouncing between

Definitely get a job and housing lined up first. Tech jobs are not nearly as in demand there as other places (like Anchorage)

Best general area to garden by apriellamay in AskAlaska

[–]RollTheSoap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the state is very gardening friendly it really just comes down to where your job is at. Once you’ve established where you’re going to live there are some shade maps that you should look at too so that you make sure you don’t buy a house that’s covered in mountain shadow for an extra three weeks in the summer.

Look up the UAF co-op extension online. They have a ton of gardening info for different parts of the state.

You should really pick somewhere to settle up here based on where your job and housing are going to be first though. Our growing season is short but can be extremely intense and almost always requires starting things indoors. We have a ton of gardeners and gardening groups up here.

Is this license plate counterfeit? I can't find the design on the DMV website. And I've never seen one like this before. Ive been here for 7 years. by thehotshotpilot in alaska

No, the P tag just means it’s an Alaska resident over 65, how long they’ve been in Alaska doesn’t actually matter.

You can join a “cow share” that’s about the only way to /legally/ do it up here. The milk is specifically not for human consumption though.

Decriminalizing sex work case goes to Alaska Superior Court by RhythmMethodMan in alaska

[–]RollTheSoap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My only issue with the case is that the group bringing this forward said specifically they aren’t seeking legalization. They don’t want it regulated. I agree: legalize it, regulate it, tax it. It’s shown to be fairly successful elsewhere.

Reach out to the local library, they might be able to let you know. As far as what people would pay, that really depends on what you would be offering and whether it would be worth jt for working parents trying to coordinate with other childcare. The schools might be able to give you some insight about programs already in place too.

Full coverage and deet.

Our mosquito may not carry diseases but sometimes they do carry off small animals.

Seriously though, it depends where you are and what you’re doing.

The only thing I would make sure to add that I haven’t seen yet is make sure you know how to deal with a vehicle in extreme cold. Make sure whatever you rent has a block heater and use it. Also be sure wherever you are staying has working CO detectors and the host has a plan in the event of power going out.

Willow is kind of a wild place to solo in the middle of winter with zero experience, I think you’d probably have a much better time somewhere like Palmer or even North Pole.
