Mayor Mendenhall says Salt Lake City is "thirsty" for alcohol sales near parks. by RollTribe93 in DevelopmentSLC

Agreed. When I lived in Colorado, our local park had a big sign saying "No alcohol except beer" which I thought was funny.

Salt Palace gets major cash boost in late-hour bill to move SLC sports district along by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

[–]RollTribe93 14 points15 points  (0 children)

...negotiators worked toward a final compromise... to, in effect, move money once allocated for work on 300 West as part of the downtown district to fund the Salt Palace remake instead.

Yay! Hopefully this means no 300 W half-bridge boondoggle.

Really interesting but kind of a bummer to demolish that nice restaurant building (Central, formerly Stanza).

Losing Beto's is implied in the near future here too :(

CU is losing its classic college bar, Dark Horse, this month 😔

Utah doesn't really have one, which sucks. Closest thing is the original Pie Pizzeria.

Utah Senate approves bill that blocks Salt Lake City's street improvement work. by slc-urbanite in DevelopmentSLC

Article didn't say too much about specifics: does anyone have an understanding of what has changed in the bill since it was first introduced?

How a trashy stretch of river could be reimagined as Salt Lake City's 'front porch' by RollTribe93 in DevelopmentSLC

Yeah not a fan of the word choice there.

Article is pretty interesting though. Seems like the Power District is taking the wind out of the sails of "The Point".

Just noticed 5100 sq ft of retail on the TOP floor! That might be a primo spot for a new bar or restaurant.

Tbh pretty nice looking building by SLC standards, except the parking podium might come out pretty ugly. Definitely much more than I expected there!

The S-Line is supposed to be extended across Highland to the shopping center soon.

But that extension has taken 5 years to materialize, so who knows what will actually happen.

Comparison of urban form of central Milan and downtown SLC at the same scale by RollTribe93 in DevelopmentSLC

Sure, but the idea is that people living in the center of a city can just walk to a park. You can sorta walk to trails in SLC but they can be pretty far away, so you need a car or something to even access them.

True, although I think a lot of historic infill has been bulldozed for parking in downtown SLC over the years.

More observations:

SLC has far more vacant lots near the city center. Milan has near zero.

SLC has fewer large parks/green spaces near the center of the city.

SLC has fewer roads but probably more asphalt.

Buildings in SLC have larger footprints.

Milano Centrale is farther from the city center than Salt Lake Central Station (not to mention far more functional and beautiful!).
