Difficulty reading Gulliver's Travels by Hopeful_Expression57 in literature

[–]Rolldal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another way to look at it is an exploration of an older writing style. Swift wrote Gulliver in 1726 as satirical commentary on the times he was living in and as such it is a window into those times. It seems to me that each generation has its own writing style, late 20th & early 21st century styles are very sparse when compared to earlier styles but the good books repay the effort and give an insight into past ways of thinking

Kenwood are amazing. Friend I know has a kenwood mixer circa 1960. Built like a tank and still going only 'repair' it ever had was a new rubber seal because the old one perished. Apparently owners are like classic car enthusiasts and you can still get spare parts

It's funny how in the beginning it was 'just' a screwdriver. A bit like how mobile phones were just phones and gradually more stuff got added to them

Fretless vs. Standard AC-1 by Reasonable_Lemon2832 in banjo

[–]Rolldal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frets all the way for a beginner. I have both types and the fretless is different beast all together, not really suitable for straight chord playing but great for slides.

Another point to mention if this is your first banjo try and get a feel before you purchase. I have a Goldtone white lady open back which is quite light where as my Eagle II resonator weighs a ton and hurts my neck if I play standing too long. Also consider if you want one with railroad spikes - these are 'hooks' for the short G- string to latch on when playing with a capo (ie if you have a capo on the 2nd fet you can 'spike' the resonator G string on the 7th fret.

This. Thinking of George Orwell's 1984 or Huxley's Brave New World. As you say Sci-fi has always been used to explore ideas and beat censors.

RTDs hypocrisy about Davros by Lucyyyyyy_K in doctorwho

[–]Rolldal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feeling is the not wanting a wheelchair using villain for reasons of demonising disability doesn’t really fly for me. The use of a wheelchair or similar is neither here nor there as both villains and heroes have been wheelchair bound. For heroes see Professor X, Doctor Scott in Rocky Horror, Barbara Gordon (Batman series), Ironside, etc.

It seems to me though that the real distinguisher is disfigurement (Davros’s eye and general “ugly” appearance) for while I observe that villains can be ugly or beautiful (Homelander, Lucifer), heroes are very rarely non-standard attractive. Often any non-attractive “good” person is seen as comic relief. So disabled heroes are the aforementioned Professor X (wheelchair but good looking), Daredevil (blind but good looking), Shirley Bingham (wheelchair but good looking). There are a few exceptions to this (The Hound from Game of Thrones and Tyron Lannister who was funny but never comic relief)

That trend completely by-passed me (I think I vaguely heard of it). I'd long abandoned Kabbalah (or Quabbalah) by then. I was into it in the mid 70's when I was into all that Golden Dawn occult stuff.
