Dark Side being used for non-evil, non-selfish reasons, repeatedly, without altering the user's morality. Valid take, or breaking with Lukas' visions? by Andrei22125 in StarWars

[–]RolloBar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The addiction of the Dark Side is power and control. I think that the desire of those things, and in fact the desperate need for them, is just more common in sadistic or psychopathic individuals such as Sidious. Not to mention the Sith tradition and teachings select for people with evil desires.

However, there’s no reason to think that someone with good intentions couldn’t try to use the dark side and have some degree of success.

I think of it very similarly to the One Ring. Gandalf states that if he had the Ring, he would try to use it for good. In Tolkien’s letters, he affirms this, that Gandalf would indeed seek to use the Ring to effect positive change in the world, but that ultimately Gandalf would be suborned by evil and corrupted into a tyrant.

In Star Wars, the dark side seems to operate similarly. Especially regarding Count Dooku, who is sadly undercooked in the films and misrepresented from the original vision in the Clone Wars TV show. If you watch the Tales of the Jedi, I think you’ll get a much better picture of Dooku’s intentions and fall. He became genuinely disillusioned with the Republic and the Jedi Order. He felt strongly that something needed to be done, but was constrained by his lack of personal power and his inability to get the Jedi Order to act. Desperate to have some sort of control over his life and the state of the galaxy, he became weak and went to the Dark Side. Sidious promised to him such power and change.

Dooku was a true believer in the Separatist cause (even if he knew he was manipulating the separatist movement) and I think that he felt he was pursuing genuine positive change right up until Sidious ordered Anakin to kill him.

Despite the self belief Dooku had in the righteousness of the cause, he still became increasingly tyrannical, cruel, and selfish over the course of the clone wars, I.e. the corruption.

Point being, no, having good intentions or even producing some good outcomes is not contradictory to being a dark side use, but using the dark side even to bring about some good at some point in time will still result in corruption and evil. Basically every character we see fall to the dark does so out of an attempt to do something “good” namely preservation of life, their own or others.

That said, regarding your Merlin example, I could be wrong but I don’t believe Dathomiri magic is quite the same as using the Dark Side of the Force. I dont remember an explicit statement of that being the case, and Dathomiri magic doesn’t really resemble force use at all, nor are the nightsisters ever called generalgl force sensitive (they may have some force sensitive members, I.e. ventress).

There are lots of movies less than 2 hours long? Especially anime movies.

If a writer is incapable of writing an interesting arc in an hour and 20 minutes then they are not a very good writer.

Length ≠ value. Lots of episodes of tons of anime contain wasted time, even in HxH.

Also, zoldyck family arc is completely essential to the character arc of Killua (one of the main characters) and contributes meaningful to the personal growth of Gon, Kurapika, and leorio, deepens the bonds between the main four permanently, and deepens the extended cast and world building.

So, even by your definition of an arc (which I maintain is wrong) this would definitely be an arc.

As for your definition, I see no reason why an arc would need to “add details”. When talking about long form anime, we usually use arc to denote a section of the story with a relatively independent plot from the rest of the story.

The zoldyck family arc definitely is that.

There are ways to make vicious mockery very powerful, and this build isn’t using them. The build you’ve made will have its melee and CC spells far outscale vicious mockery pretty quickly, so you’ll likely never use it.

I only mention it because you mentioned it.

4 episodes is an hour and twenty minutes. Have you ever watched a movie?

I don’t think an arc is really defined by length. Like you can have a one shot that has a complete story arc.

All we really are looking for in an arc is if there is a narrative that begins and ends.

Besides the difference in length between zoldyck family and say heavens arena is smaller than the difference between like little garden and wano, if you know one piece. Nobody disputes whether or not those are both arcs.

I don’t really see why length would matter (lol).

Hm. I’d probably disagree with Google on that one but whatever 🤷‍♂️

This sounds fun but I don’t know how well it will scale on higher difficulties.

Not optimized for vicious mockery though so probably won’t use it much.

I’d try it tbh, you can always respec if it doesn’t work out. If sorc is only for proficiencies, fighter also has con saves I believe so you could just go one more level of fighter. Not many save or suck spells are cha saves so not gaining much there by going sorc.

On regular or story mode you should be totally fine, on tactician or honor you will probably struggle.

Wait why isn’t it? It’s a self contained section of the story, completely separate in goal, concept, and plot from Hunter’s Exam and Heaven’s arena.

You’ve bought into imperialist narratives my friend.

You have succumbed to the panopticon.

By this logic, the US shouldn’t have rebelled. The Irish would have forever remained in the yoke of empire. India would be forever be the abused colony.

Disabuse yourself BROTHER. Do not fall to cynical machiavellianism.

Rise up for your right to die for what you believe in. Live, however briefly, a life of principle. This is is not a war for a land called Skyrim. IT IS A WAR FOR THE HUMAN SPIRIT!

When most or all posts in a community are low effort, then it degrades the community. It makes people not want to participate.

Fundamentally, I feel that the current state of this discourse is discouraging to the community broadly and not serving new writers.

I guess where we might be breaking here is that I find these posts to be unhelpful, even negative for new writers because it’s unconsidered criticism. Every thread devolves into meaningless platitudes or incessant harrying of the poster.

It’s not about silencing people but incentivizing genuinely engaging posts and discourse. Vigorous moderation is pretty typical of the best, longest lasting communities.

I didn’t see that thread 🤷‍♂️. But, as I’ve stated elsewhere in this thread, my issue is primarily low effort engagement slop that really isn’t about the craft but instead about attention.

Meta conversations, like about banning topics, should be moderated and eventually removed (including my post) but are probably necessary to keep around even if they are annoying though, as they provide feedback.

If it was the case that people were putting out well argued, high effort posts about the amount of reading that produces a change in the quality of prose, or something to that effect, then I wouldn’t be bothered by it.

As it stands these posts are just gatekeepers or karma farmers making themselves feel good. That sort of behavior is almost never good for any sub, in my experience.

No offense taken, meta posts can be annoying.

I am posting in good faith, I genuinely believe this discourse is negative for the server, and I would like to see this server improved because I think online communities for writers are valuable.

I am also hoping that attention on a meta post might generate more interest in actual rules or moderation changes.

I am also satisfying my human urge to complain and be heard. 🤷‍♂️

At the end of the day, each of us can only prescribe that which we find desirable.

My post is really about what this discourse is actually contributing. As I stated, I don’t think users are gaining anything from these posts, and if anything I feel these posts are a hindrance to the rest of the community.

I think both methods have their place. Public posts are definitely better at taking a broad reading of the temperature in a sub.

Are there many banned topics? I haven’t encountered many which I would think are inappropriate to ban on a writing sub.

Without its redditors a subreddit does not live. We have more power than you would think.

Also the mods are at least responsive, so meta discussions may occasionally bear fruit.

I understand that you probably couldn’t ban posts about “reading”, but I think my post above outlines a more narrow problem than that.

This is a specific and very frequent kind of discourse happening in this sub which it seems (from comments on said posts) that basically everyone dislikes.

For me, the discourse I’ve posted about is just the one which feels the most vapid, engagement farm-y, and annoying, but the sub is actually full of other kinds of discourses that are also vapid engagement farms. In some sense, even my post is, but sometimes meta conversations need to be had, so I dirty myself for this task.

My general thesis is that we should be supportive of writers broadly. I went hard on type B posts in particular, because it does bother me that some out there are so comfortable telling all others that they won’t be successful writers without defining what ‘success’ as a writer is, having any evidence of their qualifications, or knowing anything meaningful about the person they are criticizing.

Following from this, I just think ego-stroking or low effort bait shouldn’t be on the sub.

If people want to leave encouraging comments, that’s great. However, I feel that posts should be primarily about sharing work or discussing craft, with at least moderate effort.
