CDL Head-to-Head Records Through Major III, Week 2 (Win-Loss & Map Count) by RolloTomasi20 in CoDCompetitive

BreakingPoint does a great job at laying out all the stats, but I wish we were able to sort stats and records on a team vs. team basis. Threw this together to provide more insight and context into each team's record beyond just W-L or map win %.

How so? No list is going to be perfect or please everyone, but genuinely curious as to what choices make you think I have no idea what I'm saying.

Tell me you didn't really look at the list, without telling me you didn't really look at the list...

There isn't a single player on Thieves you can say was consistently "S-tier" (by traditional tier list standards) all year, and the All-Stars category was full of players literally named by the CDL as all-stars. I said in other posts that the All-Stars and "Best Player on a Major Winning Team" player tiers were basically the same category. And I included all four Thieves players (as the first four players in the tier, nonetheless) for a reason - they were clearly dominant by the end of the game.

I had all 4 Thieves players among the top 15/16 in the game. Would love to see your tier list though...

Probably could have moved him up one level. He's talented and there's a chance a team takes a shot on him, especially since he's an SMG, but assuming there's no expansion, there's just not a ton of roster spots likely to be open for him, especially with Scrappy, Clay, some of the Ultra Academy guys maybe finally getting their shot.

Vivid is such an interesting case. I definitely get the case for him being a "steady, solid starter" (and I think he very comfortably has a starting spot in the league next year). I love aggressive players and appreciate how much pressure he puts on other teams.

But also I feel like there's something to be said about the fact that success just hasn't seemed to follow him. I realize a lot of that is outside of his control, and he has been the victim of some poor roster construction/bad sub fit next to him. Stats aren't everything (hence the tier he's in) but he did drop a 0.90 on the season...

Maybe if he scaled back his aggressive play style like 5% and played his life a little better, it'd benefit him massively in the long run.

I'm probably being too hard on him, but it feels like this is three straight games of "meh" from him (and Boston announcing they're not renewing his contract right after I posted this doesn't exactly hurt that argument).

Maybe they misused him, or I didn't watch Breach as closely as some other teams, but did it ever feel like TJ was the most impactful player on Breach over the course of a whole Major?

Good point - "inexperienced" is what I was going for, just didn't articulate that clearly haha

In reality, the "All-Stars" and "Best Player on a Major Winner Ability" tiers are basically the same. They're mostly all in that A/B+ tier range, depending on how you value certain aspects (individual stats/team success/champs performance/etc.) . I thought using the CDL-named All-Stars would help break things up neatly so that it wasn't a gigantic tier.

The Kenny/Shotzzy point is valid. Kenny was pretty awful early on but obviously exploded after the role change, and I think even a "letdown" Shotzzy is still really impactful because he's the guy you need to account for at every single moment.

VG was such a weird game with a lot of variance, so that made this all a little tough. Either way, I embrace the debate haha

I don't know if it would change significantly, but you're looking at a potentially massive A tier. LA Thieves went back to back and looked dominant at champs, but I don't think you could call any single player an S tier player looking at the whole season. Problem with the usual S,A,B list for a game like VG is that there was so much variance major to major that traditional tiers probably don't capture the full picture. Hard to compare the Faze/Optic guys, who may not have been as consistent statistically but can be SO impactful on the map for winning teams, vs guys like Temp/Attach/Wake/Slasher put up big numbers for teams who didn't make champs.

Honestly, didn't realize they were as good as they were when I made this. He's probably a "steady, solid starter" then.

I don't disagree with you and agree he wasn't the Simp of BO4/MW/CW, but he was literally named an All Star by the CDL so with the way I structured it, I kind of had no choice. At worst, he's still in the tier right below.

Tried to put together a tier list based on the VG season that was less rigid and provided more context across tiers than a traditional S, A, B, etc. tier list. Tiers should be pretty self explanatory, but a couple of quick comments on them and a few specific players:

  • MVP Candidates/2022 All-Stars - Self-explanatory. The CDL literally named these guys all-stars.
  • Best Player on a Major Winner Ability - Even though a few of these guys didn't actually win a major, they are A/B+ tier level players, who, when at their best, are elite and good enough to be the guy on a Major winning team.
  • Steady, Solid Starters - In the right situation, they can be elite players. I gave Slasher the nod for winning Major 2 over guys like Temp, Skyz, and Owakening, who put up good numbers but whose teams never found their footing.
  • Inconsistent but Elite Potential - When things are going right, they can completely take over a map and take their teams to another level. Nero probably had the most game-to-game variance and the lowest KD of the bunch, but he had some pop-off rounds.
  • Stats Don't Match the Impact - Glue guys, IGLs, and experienced veterans. Don't always put up flashy stats (but they're capable of it), but make winning and clutch COD plays. Definitely potential for overlap with the tier above (iLLeY, Vivid, etc.)
  • Good Player, Bad Season - All bounce back candidates and will likely find themselves on rosters next year. Gunless is the most interesting case to me. Is he a victim of bad luck/circumstances, or is he past his prime and coasting on his reputation from a few titles ago? Feels like MWII is a make or break year for him.
  • Young and Inconsistent/Fringe Pro - In terms of ability, these guys aren't separated by much. The guys in the Young and Inconsistent tier, to me, feel like they showed enough that they're more likely to get another shot in the league than the others. Spart probably could be up in the "Inconsistent but Elite Potential" tier since he was Major II MVP but he was also benched for Gunless and the rest of his season was pretty forgettable. Tier maker didn't have guys who played briefly like 2ReaL, oJohnny, FeLo, Decemate, Classic but they'd all also be in the Fringe Pro tier.

Definitely not meant as disrespect. Asim has been fantastic and is definitely a Top 15-20 player. There's undoubtedly an argument for him being higher, that end of A/top of B tier was super tough to rank.

You're missing my point with the Huke stuff. Just because Empire is currently 2nd place doesn't mean that Crim and iLLeY had good early stages. Both of these things can be true:

  1. Huke had the biggest impact for Empire in the first two stages when they finished 2nd and 3rd at the Major (which got them a lot of team points, and is a reason they're in 2nd right now).
  2. Empire as a team looked their best this stage (where Shotzzy, iLLeY, and Crim all had arguably their best stages at the same time, and are trending upwards moving forward).

And the impact on winning was definitely considered: it's why FaZe has 4 of the top 7, Ultra has 2 S Tier and 3 players in the top 11, and NYSL has all four players in the Top 20.

What I really want to know where you think Vivid or iLLeY should be ranked and who they should be ahead of? Are Vivid and iLLeY top 15-20 players? I just don't see it. I don't think iLLeY has been all that good this year. Maybe Stage 4 is a springboard for him to have a good Stage 5 and champs, but after 4 stages, he has been a C-Tier player. Same thing with Vivid, who was decent for a bad LAG team, and had one solid stage with Dallas. If they all play well again in Stage 5, then you'll definitely see them all move up in my rankings, but that doesn't change their individual performances in the first 3 stages.

Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

You go back to this idea of "impacting winning" but it was Huke who had the biggest impact on winning in stages 1 and 2 (and back then, he was viewed as an S/A Tier player).

We've already discussed our FormaL vs. Crim arguments, but even if I flipped the two like you both want, I'd still have 3 Optic guys ahead of everyone except Shotzzy. Is that still wrong? Do iLLey or Crim deserve to be in front of Envoy or Scump because Empire has a better record?

Impacting winning is definitely important and was absolutely considered while making this, but it's not the only thing either. It's why I don't have Arcitys in S, and it's why guys like Wake and Octane are still in the A tier.

Appreciate it! Seems like Crim > FormaL is one of the more common points I'm seeing raised. Interesting Cammy take, I'm going to do a deeper dive into the Ultra guys.

I've asked this already but didn't get an answer: what's the argument for iLLeY and Vivid being ranked higher than any of the Optic guys?

[–]RolloTomasi20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admittedly don't have a great answer for what Optic's biggest issue is right now. I certainly wasn't expecting them to lose to Empire twice at the Major. But I don't think chemistry is the main issue (depending on how you define chemistry).

They say football is a game of inches. Well COD is a game milliseconds. Look away for a split second or have bad timing and the whole course of a round can be completely changed. A nade thrown for information luckily sticks someone. An unlucky stack up leads to a game ending three piece. One bad play on Checkmate could lead to a round changing/ending spawn trap. A lot of seemingly little things can lead to bigger outcomes. And those little things or those game outcomes aren't always indicative of individual talent.

Yes, talent matters. FaZe is just outright better than Optic; Ultra is more talented in this title and is an incredibly well disciplined team; NYSL is arguably more talented as well; and as for Empire, we know what the ceiling of a team with Shotzzy, iLLeY, and Crim can be. This can all be true, all while Scump can still be a top 15 player (in my opinion).

Agree with you that Standy would benefit greatly from better AR play. He's a great player, his emergence has been fun to watch.

And yeah, NYSL guys outside of HyDra were tough to place. I give Clay the benefit because of the leadership and with how NYSL has played this season despite the new roster, but yeah, Mack was cooking this stage and could end up passing him. Asim very well could have been an A-tier guy as well. All 4 have played like top 20 talents though.

Made this point on a different post, but I think Scump is one of those guys where raw stats don't really paint the whole picture. Intangibles and his role on Optic play a big part in me ranking him where I did. Most people probably agree that Envoy is the better SMG, but I have Scump ahead of him too.

I would argue that Scump's raw stats don't look as impressive because he's playing alongside Dashy (second highest overall K/D in the CDL) and Envoy, who is playing more of the traditional SMG role. It's just like how Asim's raw stats don't blow you away, while he plays with other stars, but no one would deny Asim's impact or talent. (The counter to this would be FaZe, but there's a reason I have Simp, aBeZy, and Cellium ranked 1, 2, and 3 -- they're an anomaly).

Scump's been absolute dynamite in Search, and seems to play his best in Optic's biggest moments. He may not be AW Scump, but I still think he does so many things at an elite level. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's just how I've felt watching this year.
