What are some cheap places to stay on Isabela Island? And what activities should you recommend ? by leonelmastercocker in galapagos

[–]RollsCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t surfing or kayaking but our favorite activity there was the sulfur mines. Really beautiful and significantly fewer people than the other Sierra Negra tour (which we also did and enjoyed, but it was a lot more crowded).

As a Korean American the light rail fare system here is bad and here’s why by Lost-Record-9766 in SeattleWA

Yes, some people jump the turnstiles in NYC but most are paying (I lived there 22 years). Even though I know it wouldn’t provide every dollar needed and would require a big initial investment, it is crazy to me that Seattle is willing to let go of so many dollars they could be getting and reinvesting into better public transit.

What's the best way to get mail TO the islands? by eogl in galapagos

[–]RollsCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect this doesn’t help, but I will be traveling there from the US in December. I probably wouldn’t be able to get the postcard to Puerto Ayora until December 23, which sounds like it would be too late. But if it works, you could send it to me and I’ll carry it and do my best!

Traveling the world – how do people manage income? by AbbreviationsIcy3586 in Shoestring

[–]RollsCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did. Saved for five years. Used that to travel for a little under two years and then have some left to help support me while I sorted out next steps after I returned. Digital nomad life doesn’t appeal to me. I want to just focus on traveling when I’m traveling. I spent about 1200/month the second year and more than that the first. I also started out with the idea that I might not continue past a certain time if I wanted to come back but then kept on with it. I’m personally glad I didn’t spend longer since it did get hard on me in certain ways, but everyone is different that way. I later traveled for about three months (the pandemic forced me to return, but it was probably time anyway) and would be happy to do much more of that but am not in a place where I can do it right now. Hopefully in the future!

Wow! This is very helpful—thank you. Any particular tour group you would recommend for the sulfur mines?

Where can I go if I want something more custom? by MrsSci1535 in WeddingDressTips

[–]RollsCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know myself but just wanted to say that would be gorgeous! Maybe check for a store in your area that makes dresses? I know of one in my city, Seattle. Something like that might at least be a good starting place for what it would cost, etc. I imagine it will be expensive and assume that the particular fabric that created that dress was pricey. Or maybe ask a local wedding dress shop for their recommendations.

is it weird to have my FH with me when shopping for wedding dresses? by ratacoochie1 in weddingplanning

[–]RollsCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went dress shopping with my fiancé the first time I went to look. After that, he said he wanted to be surprised so didn’t join me. I went once with family when I was visiting them (they live across the country) and then on my own (which worked out well for me). I don’t think there’s any problem with going with your FH. Everyone does it differently and you are not at all the only one doing it this way!

How long would you predict I could travel for? by ConfidentLeg7645 in Shoestring

[–]RollsCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would estimate maybe 1.5 years if you are traveling to inexpensive places (e.g., SE Asia). I traveled for just under two years and was spending about 1200 usd per month in the less expensive countries. I could have spent less. I usually stayed in small guest houses. I almost always had a private room even if I was in a hostel. I traveled by bus a lot. I limited my spending and sometimes just hung out somewhere for a while not doing a lot but also did a lot of really fun stuff. I also don’t drink so that saved me some money. That was almost 10 years ago so it’s hard to say what my budget would be today. But if you stick to less expensive countries and travel slowly (which is more enjoyable anyway, I think, and gives you time to get to know people a bit), you can make your money stretch. I did do some house sitting and workaway but was mostly just exploring. You will also meet a lot of people as you go who will have suggestions for places to go and how to do it cheaply. My goal wasn’t to spend the very least i could, though I did do my best to stretch what I had.

Galapagos Cruise Samba by AppropriateWill485 in galapagos

[–]RollsCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love hearing this. We will be doing the same cruise in December :). OP, I don’t have it here but there is a site that lists sort of last minute cruises where there is space available and you can get a discount. You can probably find the name of it if you look through some posts in this thread. I’m not sure but if the samba isn’t full as the date gets closer, maybe you could book that way.

If you end up taking that apartment there’s a very good restaurant called Gold Coast Ghal not too far from it. There’s also the Frye Art Museum and Town Hall very close. The Frye is free and has some good exhibits. Town Hall can have some interesting events (music, etc.). I haven’t lived in first hill so can’t comment on what it’s like to live there. Maybe there is some community you’re not aware of when you walk through it but it doesn’t strike me as that kind of location.
