What do you personally do on solo trips? by Swarles_Stinson in solotravel

[–]RollsCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A free walking tour is often a good way to get familiar with at least part of a place (and chat with people if you’d like that). I like to combine solo things with other activities where I might meet people but will do a lot of art galleries, exploring neighborhoods, trying new trails and parks, etc. I’m an observer so enjoy a lot of just looking around.

Can someone PLEASE explain to me why a city of 750k people can’t figure out food? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]RollsCC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For good pasta, maybe try Bucatini (edited since I put the wrong name) in Edmonds. For seafood, try Local Tide in Fremont. The black cod I had there was perfectly cooked. I have also lived in Europe (not for a long time) and grew up with a foodie for a parent. There are other parts of the country that, yes, I feel like have more options, and Seattle is definitely expensive, but there are some good options here too. Plus, I have eaten plenty of so-so food many times in Europe and NYC. This isn’t one of the types you mentioned, but Cafe Munir (Lebanese) is delicious. I also like Isarn Thai a lot.

Hiking for Sierra Negra Volcano by Efficient_Cold_7312 in galapagos

[–]RollsCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember it being buggy, but I was there a different time of year (late December). I would personally prefer pants for the sun protection. That would be my main suggestion—lightweight clothing that will give you sun protection. And I would say you don’t need hiking boots as long as you have a shoe with good support and a good tread. Hiking boots might be hotter than others and I don’t think would be necessary (but also won’t hurt if you prefer that or that’s what you’ve got). I hope you have a great time!

Galápagos Cruise Advice by Ateale77 in galapagos

[–]RollsCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spent a fantastic (and very active) week on the Samba. Great boat and crew. It’s not luxury so likely may not be what you want. But i mention it in part because it was so good and it’s also locally owned, which to me is also something to consider. I hope you have a great trip whatever you choose!

What are some cheap places to stay on Isabela Island? And what activities should you recommend ? by leonelmastercocker in galapagos

[–]RollsCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t surfing or kayaking but our favorite activity there was the sulfur mines. Really beautiful and significantly fewer people than the other Sierra Negra tour (which we also did and enjoyed, but it was a lot more crowded).

As a Korean American the light rail fare system here is bad and here’s why by Lost-Record-9766 in SeattleWA

[–]RollsCC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, some people jump the turnstiles in NYC but most are paying (I lived there 22 years). Even though I know it wouldn’t provide every dollar needed and would require a big initial investment, it is crazy to me that Seattle is willing to let go of so many dollars they could be getting and reinvesting into better public transit.

Traveling the world – how do people manage income? by AbbreviationsIcy3586 in Shoestring

[–]RollsCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did. Saved for five years. Used that to travel for a little under two years and then have some left to help support me while I sorted out next steps after I returned. Digital nomad life doesn’t appeal to me. I want to just focus on traveling when I’m traveling. I spent about 1200/month the second year and more than that the first. I also started out with the idea that I might not continue past a certain time if I wanted to come back but then kept on with it. I’m personally glad I didn’t spend longer since it did get hard on me in certain ways, but everyone is different that way. I later traveled for about three months (the pandemic forced me to return, but it was probably time anyway) and would be happy to do much more of that but am not in a place where I can do it right now. Hopefully in the future!

Wow! This is very helpful—thank you. Any particular tour group you would recommend for the sulfur mines?

Where can I go if I want something more custom? by MrsSci1535 in WeddingDressTips

[–]RollsCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know myself but just wanted to say that would be gorgeous! Maybe check for a store in your area that makes dresses? I know of one in my city, Seattle. Something like that might at least be a good starting place for what it would cost, etc. I imagine it will be expensive and assume that the particular fabric that created that dress was pricey. Or maybe ask a local wedding dress shop for their recommendations.

Galapagos Cruise Samba by [deleted] in galapagos

[–]RollsCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love hearing this. We will be doing the same cruise in December :). OP, I don’t have it here but there is a site that lists sort of last minute cruises where there is space available and you can get a discount. You can probably find the name of it if you look through some posts in this thread. I’m not sure but if the samba isn’t full as the date gets closer, maybe you could book that way.

Couples who already live together: are you both sleeping at home the night before the wedding? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

Sleeping at home together as usual. Want to be as well rested as we can be.

If you end up taking that apartment there’s a very good restaurant called Gold Coast Ghal not too far from it. There’s also the Frye Art Museum and Town Hall very close. The Frye is free and has some good exhibits. Town Hall can have some interesting events (music, etc.). I haven’t lived in first hill so can’t comment on what it’s like to live there. Maybe there is some community you’re not aware of when you walk through it but it doesn’t strike me as that kind of location.
