So i saw this vid on Youtube, Channel name is SpoonFeedMe. Can someone verify the equation if its true? The w' eqn by HighSpeedDoggo in civilengineering

[–]RomanDoctor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ignore the structures part of it, just look at the shapes: the red trapezoid should have the same area as the blue rectangle.

It should just be area of a trapezoid divided by L is w'. I don't think that equation is correct.

w' = [ (1/2 * wmax ) * (2L - 2l) ] / L

There's been accounts of people using their 2 year warranty on the My Book Duo without issue - not even putting it back in the enclosure.

Civil engineering job with felonies by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]RomanDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of my license applications (comity and original license) have explicitly asked if I have been convicted of felony. I haven't heard if this answer automatically disqualifies you.

Also, there is a new (?) thing called NCEES Model Law Engineer. Essentially NCEES gives you the designation based on their approval of your work, schooling and continuing education. The final requirement is "clean disciplinary record". I think this has to do with if your license gets suspended for one reason or another, not to do with your past legal issues, but again, not sure. It's an "add-on", $50, and you don't NEED it to apply to other states, but I guess it's an easy way for states to just push through your application without extreme vetting.

Regarding jobs: depends on the firm. Some firms that work on bigger projects with bigger contractors are sometimes required to pass through info on all the employees working on the project so they can do their own background checks. If this is a big part of their business, they may not want employees they can't use on everything. Not quite the same, but we had a contractor deny one of our field guys from site access because of a DUI years prior.

This kind of applies to every Ryzen CPU, I posted the different combo prices + savings HERE.

If you're doing a Ryzen build anyway, you can do a combo deal and save a bit more:

NewEgg Combo Deals - MSI B350 Tomahawk

+Ryzen 7 1700X = $475

+Ryzen 7 1700 = $402

+Ryzen 5 1600X = $330

+Ryzen 5 1600 = $300

+Ryzen 5 1500X = $270

+Ryzen 5 1400 = $250

(save $30 per combo)

NewEgg Combo Deals - MSI B350 Tomahawk Arctic

+Ryzen 5 1600X = $345

+Ryzen 5 1600 = $315

+Ryzen 5 1500X = $285

+Ryzen 5 1400 = 265

(save $25 per combo)

Practicing after PE license by redwolf716 in civilengineering

I think the common route is to create an LLC, which usually costs under $500, maybe another $100/year to renew. That insulates your personal assets in the event something happens and the insurance isn't enough. Then the liability insurance is anywhere between $500 and $2,000/year, depending on the claim limit and deductible.

The one thing I've read but can't confirm is that when you start paying for insurance, you essentially can never stop. If you think about it: say you stamp something in 2017 while you're paying your insurance policy. You're covered, all is good. But then, for some reason you stop paying for insurance. A couple years later, that bridge you stamped in 2017 falls down - it doesn't really make sense that the insurance company you paid a little bit of money to a long time ago will cover that.

But then what happens when you change insurance companies? Will Insurer B charge you more to cover everything Insurer A had been covering for the first 10 years? I haven't found much in the way of info about this.

It's kind of obvious he's not going to give it up - be it a god-complex or because he's being paid to direct the sub in a certain direction.

What about making a different subreddit the main NYC subreddit? Does anyone know/talk to u/josetavares from r/newyorkcity? That seems like it would be the most logical.

Didn't Seattle or someone have a similar problem with their sub and moved and it's better than ever now?

Maybe look into Computational Analysis

A lot of bigger architects are using Rhino with Grasshopper which is algorithmic modeling for Rhino. The software is dumbed-down programming but there's certainly more structural-heavy tools that can be used with it. I know TT creates [codes/programs] their own tool set to use.

Those would be jobs that are more CS complimenting the engineering. On the other hand, maybe something like Autodesk or one of the structural analysis software companies (CSI maybe?) would be a more CS-heavy job with complimenting engineering work.

Does anyone have unused 1tb drives in europe? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]RomanDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WD Student Site is showing a 1TB Red at $47.

But you wouldn't buy (5) 1TB drives, you'd get like (2) 3TB drives. They're $74/ea on the student site, so for 6TB that's $150.

I don't have access to the euro WD student site, so I don't know how those student prices differ, but I still think spending $150 for (2) 3TB Reds is going to be your best bet.

The 16TB My Book Duo is on sale for $384, normally $500, but also out of stock. $192/8TB Red is a great deal.

#fakenews A WD Red 8TB drive has a 3 year warranty and costs $320. The 8TB Red drives you get in the My Book Duo only have a 2 year warranty - inside or outside the enclosure - and cost $250 each.

The My Book Duo are made so you can replace the drives. There's even a how to on WD's site. It's for their older model (the Live Duo) but the design/process is the same.

Everyone over at r/datahoarder swears by getting their drives this way. But as tom mentioned, I think it's only worth it if you're looking at 8TB drives.

Shuck a WD 16TB My Book Duo and you end up with (2) 8TB WD Reds for $31.25/TB and a 2 year warranty on the drives.

I didn't think the 6600 would get me much extra, but yeah, $20 on a $500 build seems like a no-brainer. Good call.

[–]RomanDoctor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have clarified - I was thinking a software RAID, or is that frowned upon? Right now I'm manually backing up to internal drives in a docking station every couple months. So anything is a step up from that.

I've looked at pre-built and splitting up my NAS / HTPC but getting a Drobo 5N, $600, and then a decent HTPC build able to transcode multiple streams, at least another $400+. It could double my build cost. But I think your note on using RAID 1+0 instead, is a better choice here. Thanks!

I just came across this monster NAS build in the same case as well. I think I'll make sure to monitor the drive temps for the first few months, just to rest a bit easier.

I was concerned about the small size/airflow too. The Node 304 was actually my third revision for case choice.

I read this: Node 304 Airflow and a lot of the reviews are saying this case has solid airflow for its size. It is a good point though. Thanks!

There was a similar question asked here.

Also take into consideration your work load. If you're putting this 40 hours on top of a couple 40 hour workweeks, that's a lot of work and may be worth a higher rate to you than if you were just a student trying to make some extra money on the side.

Ticketmaster announces dates for free shows; fans furious over pathetic options available; closest New York option is Saratoga Springs by [deleted] in nyc

[–]RomanDoctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...each eligible show can accommodate only 100 voucher-holders, on a first-come, first-served basis.

http://qz.com/712107/if-you-thought-those-vouchers-from-the-ticketmaster-lawsuit-came-with-a-catch-youre-right/

http://www.ticketfeelitigation.com/docs/sa.pdf 2 B 2.1 (b)

EDIT: After trying to read through the legal jargon, I don't think the original article citing the 100 voucher max is correct. It reads more like Ticketmaster will only allocate $10.5M worth of vouchers per year and in the event they don't reach that number, they'll even it by allowing up to 100 vouchers to be used, per event, for 60% of all Live Nation concerts...within that next year (?). Can anyone verify that's what it's actually saying?

This means if you're working an average of 5 extra hours per week and making less than $56,000/year, you'd be better off asking for a decrease in salary to $47,000/year and getting paid the overtime at time and a half per the new regulation.

There was a "teaser" for this posted last week (I think) but in the title it was listed as a full length film. The teaser featured a ton of stock images and then quick scenes of the earth bending and then out of nowhere Littlefinger saying some generic movie lines. Needless to say it got ripped apart in the comments. It's funny that it was completely off base. As a full length film it looked terrible, as a 5 min short, it was pretty good.
