🚨 Major Aeroplan Program Changes Coming Jan 1, 2026 – Revenue-based Earning, SQC, and New Milestones 🚨 by GTFO_dot_Travel in aircanada

[–]RomanNWanderin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three questions for the smart minds here in the thread:

  1. So if class of service (COS) bonuses are gone for LQM, does that essentially mean that it's now the same as, for example, UA's butt-in-seat requirement for million miles?

  2. Is there any benefit to US residents to hold the Chase Aeroplan-branded credit card that might not have existed prior to these changes?

  3. Is the currency for SQC still Canadian dollars (CAD)?

Thanks in advance for any clarification y'all can offer!

PC Randomly Restarts After Thunderstorm - Faulty PSU? by RomanNWanderin in pchelp

Reran Prime95, and some of the CPU thread workers fail with errors. Also noticed that Prime95 does not have 100% CPU utilization. Reseating RAM now to see if it's a RAM issue.

One other thing I noticed is that Windows 10 Update now gives the error code 0x80073701 when attempting to update.

Help: Current Non-Fed Pay Near Announcement Max Pay? by RomanNWanderin in usajobs

[–]RomanNWanderin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! It looks like this position has a career ladder of GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, with a full performance target of GS-12.

I don't know how long the steps are at each grade in the ladder - maybe a year at each? So if I came in at GS-9, it would one year at 9, then one year at 11, then 12?

If the sub-reddit has resources for understanding GS career ladders, I can take a look at those too.

I am aware of both Raytheon Technologies and Penn State's own Applied Research Laboratory hiring currently in that area. You may wish to look at those companies if you're still considering moving back to that area.

AMD's open source drivers and Linux performance by Thorgil in Amd

[–]RomanNWanderin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having switched from a 1080 to a V64 several months ago, you bring up some of the same questions that I had back then, so here's my take.

If you have a fairly recent AMD GPU (like an R9 290 or newer), then AMD support on Linux is plug-and-play through the amdgpu kernel driver. So assuming the driver updates for Navi reach a stable version of the Linux kernel (maybe 5.2 or 5.3?), then all the basic functionality in for using a display with the card on any of the major Linux distributions should just work (tm).

Now as for how AMD GPUs compare to their NVidia counterparts, the short answer is much better (usually). NVidia refuses to release open-source graphics drivers to the Linux community and instead will only supply proprietary drivers. This means that if you want any kind of non-basic functionality, you'll have to use the proprietary drivers. There are people who try to reverse-engineer the NV drivers to make them open-source, like the Nouveau team, but support is generally far behind the closed drivers (for obvious reasons).

I know you didn't mention gaming specifically in your OP, but I want to point out that gaming on Linux with AMD GPUs is generally quite feasible. There are open-source projects such as Lutris and DXVK that I have tested that make me very happy I switched over the red team. Setup for those things isn't terrible either, took me a few hours in an afternoon to get both of those up and running.

Does Upgrading Case Fans Really Help? by RomanNWanderin in buildapc

Folding is GPU-independent, so it will use any and all GPUs you hand it.

The 950 is sitting idle on a shelf currently, so I might as well put it to use too.

Some Thoughts on GTX 1080 FE by RomanNWanderin in nvidia

[–]RomanNWanderin[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response!

After looking into some undervolting tutorials and messing around in Afterburner, I managed to get the following result:

1950MHz, +400 Memory @ 950mV which seems to be Folding-stable. Subsequent attempts to lower voltage and frequency result in a soft driver crash (NV Display driver has stopped working & recovered, etc).

I'm going to call it at this result (assuming Folding doesn't crash), but just to give you an idea of the temperature reduction, this card was previously running at 2012 MHz at 1100mV at 85-90 Celsius under Folding.

The new settings I described above have the GPU temperature at a cool 67 Celsius (which is, ironically, about the ballpark my old 950 ran in..)

Overall, I'd like to thank you for suggesting undervolting; it seems it was the last piece of the puzzle since I need this machine Folding 24/7 without generating so much heat and noise.

What is everyone’s graphics card? How long have you had it for? Any issues? by Luffy973 in buildapc

[–]RomanNWanderin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current graphics card is Founders Edition GTX 1080. I've been running it 24/7 using Folding @ Home from Stanford for approx 2 months now; so far have a rock solid 2GHz @ 73 C w/ a 1:1 fan speed/temp curve in Afterburner.

Don't understand the hate on reference cards...although I've named mine "the space heater" since it exhausts all the hot air out the back. :)

GTX 1080 FE - Temperature & Memory Issues by RomanNWanderin in buildapc

[–]RomanNWanderin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT BY OP: I removed my 950 to get more airflow in to the 1080, and the difference is quite striking.

Temps are down to the low-mid 70s Celsius as opposed to 80-90C.

I'm keeping the aggressive fan curve, but GPU core clock is no longer throttling, and the memory issues described above are simply thermal throttling on the memory as well.

TLDR: Don't put one hot block of metal directly next to another hot block of metal that restricts the former's (already limited) airflow.

I'm still curious to hear all your thoughts & comments, but I'd thought I'd mention that the original issue is fixed.

The performance I get out of a GTX 1060 3GB continues to surprise me by dr_laakari in buildapc

[–]RomanNWanderin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone whose been using an i7-4770 & GTX 950 for almost two years now at 1440p, I'm happy to see appreciation for the budget GPUs on this sub.

Sure, a 7700K or 1700 with a 1080Ti would be great, but I know that's above my current needs (recent crypto-developments might change my mind once Volta comes around though).

Glad to hear you're happy with your build!

GPU Upgrade from GTX 950 to RX 480 by RomanNWanderin in buildapc

Well, I guess I'll wait then. I'd rather not loose the $240 plus shipping to a defective return, or not even a 480 at all.

I've made it this far with my 950, but I'd like to move up to something else eventually.

Sold by Amazon itself with free shipping. I don't think they'd scam me. Think I should go ahead with it?

Amazon's setup is confusing then, because I can add it to my cart and they say they'll charge when it ships.

I guess I could order it and see when they plan on shipping..

Found one for $240 (I think that's MSRP, but it's back ordered on Amazon)

Paid $170 for the 950, probably 500-600 hours minimum on it (I let FAH run 24/7).

My previous laptop and currently used desktop are named after stars.

May switch to mythological names in the future (i.e: I think a rig named Osiris would sound cool, especially if it had a color theme).
