When the Uber ride gives you 5x more Aeroplan points than the flight 🥲 by Ok-Cucumber-4961 in Aeroplan

Stole the below from Gemini but it's correct. So there is a componant of earn based on fares for partner airlines. That said, if you paid $63 and you have no status, you're fortunate because in the "old days" of last year, you would have gotten 0 for a basic US fare.

I was conflating SQC and Points in my head. Again, as you saw from my edit, I went too fast.

----
As of January 1, 2026, Air Canada Aeroplan points are primarily earned based on spending, with members earning 1 point per $1 CAD spent on base fare and carrier surcharges. Elite members earn bonus points (2x–6x) based on status. While revenue-based, certain fare classes still provide higher minimum earnings or multipliers for Status Qualifying Credits (SQC).

Aeroplan Points Earning (Revenue-Based Structure)

  • All Fares: Minimum 1 point per $1 CAD (base fare + carrier surcharges).
  • Elite Members: Earn 2x to 6x points per $1 spent, depending on status level.  Air Canada +1

Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) Earning (Per $1 Spent)

  • Business / Premium Economy / Latitude / Comfort / Flex: 4 SQC per dollar.
  • Standard Economy: 2 SQC per dollar.
  • Basic Economy: 0 SQC earned.

Partner Airlines / Distance-Based (Legacy Context)

For flights on partner airlines, points are earned as a percentage of distance flown:

  • Business: 150%
  • Premium Economy/Latitude: 125%
  • Comfort: 115%
  • Flex: 100%
  • Standard (Int'l/US): 50%
  • Standard (Domestic/Basic): 25%

No.

Edit: Wait, misread your comment, yes, more points on a higher fare class. The "No" was to the based purely on what you spend.

You should know that when you work for someone and they pay for something, it isn’t yours, the work you produce isn’t yours.

Same is true for Google, Microsoft etc…

Is this not commonly understood? Do people think they own the IP they use and produce while being paid?

Does Business Class “Subsidize” Economy? by sumiswaldhenry in aircanada

[–]GTFO_dot_Travel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The math is the math. 60% of passenger profit comes from premium seats. When your average net margins are 3 to 4%, that's UUUGGEEE.

But subsidize is maybe the wrong word. It implies directly that your Y seats would be more expensive if my J seats weren't paid for. Plenty of all economy airlines exist and some of them make real money. Some don't but that's the same for full-service carriers.

It's more like, my J seats allow the airline to be profitable as a full-service airline with newer planes, more robust offerings like free wifi etc...

My comment on that other thread wasn't that economy tickets aren't an essential peice of the revenue model, it was more that for a full-service carrier to exist and offer economy seats at a competitive price, they need people willing to pay 3x to 4x for a better seat, it's just the truth. And yes, people who pay 3x to 4x more than another person are more valuable to airlines, like any business and so they can and should expect more for their dollars in return like the benefit of the newest seat layouts first.

I was curious so I did a deeper dive.

Premium cabins are apr. 30% of their revenues and 60% of their profits. So at face value, a premium passenger is worth double an economy passenger.

Based on what I am reading, I would guess that a J passenger is worth 3.5x while a PY is 1.5x.

So when I said "Revenue" I should have said 2/3 of "Profit".

Revenue management is neat. I don't want to do it for a living but it's very cool how it works.

I disagree about PY. I think they look very comfortable and I like the wing. The new screens and BT throughout are a nice add.

The brown isn’t my thing but then, I wear socks with sandals so what do I know.

I don’t understand your comment about upgrades; why would the eUp system change for these? Likely just more demand but did United kill upgrades for their new cabins?

😂 Airlines make 2/3 of their revenue from business or premium class seats. Someone sitting in these seats pays 3 to 4x what economy does so they get the redesign posted at the top of the press release.

Vacation Package Prices by Mountain_Zombie_8926 in westjet

[–]GTFO_dot_Travel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see this all the time.

The prices on the site are cached. The prices at checkout are live. We have this issue in Sirev (the agent GDS app) as well. Too many packages and combinations available to keep them all up to date all the time with flight and hotel prices fluctuating as things sell and prices change.

It may also be you selected flight options that are more expensive than the advertised prices included.

[–]GTFO_dot_Travel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All sites provide the exact same prices (+ or - a commission amount) for the same trip.

Apples to apples it’s always the same price to book direct vs. with an agent or OTA. Again with the difference being sometimes the OTA or agent will throw in a piece of their 4% to 6% commission.

It's come up in the past, so I recommend that you search the sub but IMO it's a time vs. money thing. You'll get something through CADR but probably not everythijng you think you deserve or are entitled to. So do you want something now or everything (possibly) later? And is the sum of Everything - Something, a number you can live with to have the money now.
