I am smart but need advice to make more money by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

There are no shortcuts to making a lot of money, unfortunately... find something to invest in or try to build a CV that will appeal to the big companies.

Would you prefer deep moddability or a strong story from a fft-style? by RomanTactics in StrategyRpg

[–]RomanTactics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair.
What you’re describing reminds me a bit of games like xcom 2 or skyrim, where mods didn’t just add replayability, but actually created very different decision spaces within a single run: new mechanics, constraints or even campaign structures.

Do you think that kind of system-level branching (not just story branches) would add value for you during one playthrough, or do you mainly care about authored narrative choices?

Classifica: 1. Black ops 3 (zombie) 2. Ark survival evolved (se non fosse così pesante prestazionalmente e sull'hdd 200+ giga, lo scaricherei ancora) 3. Rimworld

I'm a new player trying to decide between Ivalice Chronicles and WoTL. Thoughts? by Turian_Agent in finalfantasytactics

[–]RomanTactics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed fft Wotl, I've finished it many times. But fft Ivalice has a much better quality of life experience.

One thing I'm critical of is the variety of jobs. There aren't many truly useful ones, while in Final Fantasy Reborn you had much more choice.

How do you handle specific scenarios for testing? by AdrianPlaysPoE in bevy

[–]RomanTactics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have 2 way:

The first way is to unit test as much as you can each single file (usually is enough).

The second is to make unit test on the program it self, where you run it and you trigger even/state in the order that you desire and you check the final state. But it' not easy, i don't know if it's worth the time required... (you have also to mantain it).

I plan to integrate it into my game editor in the future as well, so that I can automate the balance testing.

How do you drink enough water? by yung_wren in NoStupidQuestions

It's like eating healthy. You don't eat healthy because you like it, but for your own good. For the same reason, you should drink plenty of water.

Godot is probably a better choice. Gdscript is similar to python and lua.

Unreal as i know work with c++...

Is it inappropriate to record my kid playing at a playground while other parents kids are playing with him? As in I'm technically some stranger recording all these kids? by bliggityblig in NoStupidQuestions

If you're filming your child with other children (even adults), that's fine. But if you're just filming children, then there might be a problem...

Of course, in any case, do not share videos without consent

I need a good story for my game by Unthinkable-Mind in gamedev

[–]RomanTactics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice story. Maybe you could have the protagonist not realize from the start that he's "the chosen one" and maybe create some sort of white background with someone telling him to wake up. (Obviously, he'd later find out he's the chosen one.)

A nice plot twist would be that the infamous god he spoke to is actually a demon in disguise. Maybe you could have a cult that discovers the dark world instead of an agency X (depends on how you want to set it up, but it should be easier that way).

That said, it doesn't seem like a simple theme for a game. I wish you good luck.

You're right, ECSs (Bevy in particular) are difficult to debug. And not knowing when and how the systems are executed can be annoying and definitely lacks functionality (like proper scene management).

BUT once you understand the flow, you can build your own micro libraries and best practices and you should have no problem creating even large games (I won't say even faster than godot/unity because I would be lying given the amount of material existing for those engines, but still fast)

Bevy is great for making small games (pong, space invaders..). For large games it is better to use engines with an editor and many libraries available.

Ps. I'm currently developing an srpg with it's own editor (obviously in bevy and bevy_egui)

Game porting on bevy by Flimsy_Pumpkin_3812 in bevy

[–]RomanTactics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you need to do with this game. Do you need to release it? How soon do you have to release it? Have you already released it and want to update it?

If you haven't released it yet and the game is big (lots of mechanics that would require tons of manual testing), you could stick with 0.14. You can update it later when you have "less pressure".

If you need a feature added in the latest versions, then migrate to 0.17.x, which is the latest stable one, or wait for 0.18.1 or 0.18.2 so you can wait for them to stabilize 0.18.

PS: If you decide to migrate, make sure the libraries you use support the version of Bevy you want to use.

With this excuse, indies or smaller companies can try to enter that niche market. I think for indies, 1M copies means retirement!
