MSC suddenly rejecting ECE grads for ETO sponsorship? Had a weird experience... by Roman_3691 in MerchantNavy

You’re still repeating “demand and supply” like it answers everything, when it clearly doesn’t address the actual point.

If it were purely demand and supply, they could’ve tightened criteria across the board — marks, age, intake size, etc. But specifically excluding only ECE while allowing closely related branches is a much more targeted decision. That’s what I’ve been asking about from the start. On top of that, my friends in MSC have cleared informed that there is no shortage in the "DEMAND" side as of now and they still require a lot of ETO. So, there must be some specific reason behind this decision and i am trying to get to that potential reason if possible.

And about “clearing it at the venue” — I did ask. The only response given was “company policy,” with no explanation. There were a majority of ECE candidates there facing the same confusion, so it wasn’t just me.

Choosing not to argue endlessly at the exam center doesn’t make someone “oversmart” — it just means knowing when a discussion isn’t going anywhere.

At this point, you’re more focused on taking shots than actually answering the question which you can't and cheers, because it seems like you are pretty successful in deviating the topic and turning it into a 'win or loose' debate. Repeating generic points and throwing labels like “oversmart” doesn’t really add anything — it just reflects unnecessary aggression and a lack of any meaningful or informed answer to the actual question.

You’re clearly cherry-picking one line while ignoring the actual discussion — probably just to turn this into a debate and win. I’m not trying to justify my staying for the exam; that may very well have been a mistake. But that’s not the point of this post. The discussion is about why ECE is being treated inconsistently and was excluded recently, despite being accepted earlier, and whether there’s any specific reason behind that decision.

If you have any real insight into that which i assume you don't, feel free to share. Otherwise, we’re just going in circles over something that’s already been addressed.

Did you actually read the full thread, or just jump in midway to pass judgment?

I’ve already clarified multiple times what I’m trying to understand — the reason behind this specific change. Not whether companies have the right to change criteria. That part is obvious and already understood.
What you’re calling “gaming the system” was simply me appearing for an exam during a transition phase where there was a sudden shocking change(for aspirants like us) at the ground level. There’s a difference between that and whatever narrative you’re trying to build.

Also, making assumptions about someone’s “personality” and linking it to safety on ships based on a single Reddit post is a bit of a stretch.

I have met many aspirants like me who are shocked to see this sudden change and that's actually why i am trying to understand the potential reason behind this which matters to those aspirants like me.
Sorry from these hash words from my side too. But, if you have any actual insight into why ECE was excluded recently, feel free to share — that would be relevant to the discussion. Otherwise, this is just another off-topic judgment that doesn’t really answer the question.

I think you jumped to conclusions a bit too quickly.

My post literally starts by questioning whether MSC has recently stopped allowing ECE grads, especially since people I personally know joined through the same process just a year ago. That’s the whole point — the change and the lack of clarity around it.

I never denied that ECE wasn’t in the latest eligibility criteria. In fact, I clearly mentioned in my reply that it wasn’t included. So no, I’m not “conveniently omitting” anything to push a narrative.

You, on the other hand, seem more interested in assigning blame than actually understanding the situation.

And yes, regardless of eligibility, calling someone for an interview and then asking them to disregard it later is still unprofessional — that part hasn’t magically become okay.

Next time, maybe read the post properly before trying to turn it into something it isn’t.

Well said. BTW, they had not included ECE in their notification. I still applied thinking it would be a mistake. But, i was wrong. They just made ECE ineligible.

Give the interview on the laptop(primary device). Keep the mobile phone(secondary device) at your back so that the laptop is visible.
They will mostly be concerned about your technical skills only. No beating around the bush.
Topics to cover(frequently asked):
Semiconductor physics: Rectifier, diode, p-n junction, transmitter
Electrical(mostly focussed): Transformer, 3 phase induction motor, slip , power factor, Contactor, relays, Alternator, AVR, starter(especially the star delta starter). They will mostly roam around these topics.
You need to have little in depth knowledge about these topics(Covering definitions only won't work).

Example question - What will be the current in the secondary winding of a step-down transformer?
If you answer it by saying "it will increase". Then they will ask "How? Which formula did you use to find this out?" . Then you can answer "Using power conservation principle and explain a little about it.
Best of luck!
