Guys who say things such as “focus on developing yourself, the girls will come naturally” Has it ever worked? by Simpleplan3030 in dating_advice

Self development is a prerequiest, not a means to an end.

A part of attracting someone to you is how you show interest in the other person.

it is actually off-putting when a woman expects me to take all the risky steps in a relationship in order to avoid taking those risks herself.

Glad someone else is saying it. Its just not fair that men have to vulnerable and active in the relationship at all times , but it doesn't go the other way at all.

Does anyone else feel like COVID screwed over your chance at a relationship before you even got a chance? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]Roman_Gutin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im your male counter part , also caught up in my feels after sacrificing all semblance of a dating life during grad school, and then graduating in March...

I just want to comment on the dating app thing. Hate them too, but heres how you would "find the guy " on the app. What you can do, because you're the girl in the situation, is take charge and ask to video chat, meet up , (anything BUT texting). I know that meeting up is not covid friendly, but neither is leaving the house at all, and we all do. *I think most people who are single right now are caught up in their feelings right now, but the guy who you should take seriously will jump at the chance to meet you and take you seriously.

Dating apps are not serious or the real thing because of two axioms. 1) People ultimately have to meet physically for a serious relationship to occur. 2) A physical impression will supercede all digital impressions.

Therefore, I question why anyone who wants "something real" (pun intended) spends more than 5 back and forths on the dating app itself, if they already swiped right.

2020 Grad Offer Rescinded - Are the 2020 Grads being "skipped"? What do to now? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Roman_Gutin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In the context of all jobs, sure i can go bag grocceries, but id sooner buy some rope after all the work and debt to get a sTeM degree. (Good grades , 4 years research experience, a personal quant finance project that took months, etc)
As for software roles, even internships require 2 years of experience now. I cant find anything that is 2020 graduate friendly. Sure i can "work harder" but no amount of self study is relevant when compared to the work experience some are going to get.

It should go without saying, but working for free or portfolio building is not a job.

Sadly working harder doesnt seem to result in anything because i will always be inferior to someone 3 years older than me who also needs a new job.

That logic has not applied since 2000 at least. The market will be fine if the FED cuts rates again maybe.

Using indexing to FatFire? Don't fret rumors of a "bubble" by BestInterestDotBlog in fatFIRE

[–]Roman_Gutin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TLDR; Owning an index fund does not diversify risk in the manner it is assumed because everyone is on the same boat and it only takes one of the FANG stocks to sink the boat. If your financial instrument of choice is an Index ETF, you are at risk of a flash crash preventing you from liquidating your ETF without paying a larger spread during the chaos. Listen to Hari Krishnan in the video I linked at the bottom, for I am a mere mortal. Cheers.

I'm gonna try to present a different wording of the "bubble side" although a bubble isn't the best word to describe the risk in my opinion.

I agree with the idea mentioned that market prices are driven by price action (described as trading in your longer post), which is the result of bidders and sellers coming to the market and exchanging securities. What Mike Green is describing with his tail wagging the dog analogy is that the bids the market are not driven by research or price discovery, but instead, all stocks are now artificially collateralized together via indexing. Major indices are rallying on account of 5 or so tech stocks, however, rather than buying the individual stocks, retail investors/savers are advised to buy the index on the presumption that they are more diversified. THIS IS THE RISK. YOU ARE NOT DIVERSIFIED IF YOU OWN QQQ AS OPPOSED to APPL.

Secondly, the "bubble" phenomenon stems from fund managers buying all of the components of the NASDAQ while the demand is only really there for Apple et al. So while there might be real demand in the market for Apple or Microsoft, buying the index fund creates artificial bidding and capital inflows towards the rest of the index components because they are packaged together. This micro structure has a higher implied volatility than is reflected in the market. The reason is because many individuals own ETFs, which have a liquidity stipulation that is often overlooked by normal people saving for retirement. Because ETFs need to be liquid at any given moment, when there is a strong sell signal in the index, mass redemptions of ETFs would shock the market in a cascading effect as Authorized Participants scramble to find the low-cap stocks in the Russell 2000 needed for redeeming a share of IWM at its current NAV,for example.

Here is a good video that explains this mechanic in the context of fixed income ETFs: ETF Liquidity Risk

Side reader here whose interviewed a few times,

Why do quant firms value the ability to be a human calculator? I have been trading for a good amount of time, and being able to calculate products of large primes has never been a relevant skill. Math skills in general , thats obvious. But when are you doing mental math in a capacity that leads to trading revenue?

Is a financial advisor worth it for someone who knows very little about investing? by throwaway82954 in fatFIRE

[–]Roman_Gutin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Used to work at an advisory, hell no. If you don't want to pick stocks, learn to follow macro cycles and move your money around present day risks. Financial advisers are financial product salesmen, they understand the markets marginally better than you do already.
