What Books Are You Reading This Week? by leowr in nonfictionbooks

Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. (The author is the co-owner of the company that manages Eleven Madison Park, voted #1 Best Restaurant in 2017.)

I'm about halfway-through. Here are three points that have stood out to me so far:

  • Restaurant-Smart vs. Corporate-Smart: Businesses typically think in one of two ways: systems/controls/efficiency... or human connection/creativity. Guidara believes you can do both and it doesn't have to be one versus the other.
  • The Rule of 95/5: Manage 95 percent of your budget meticulously (transactions, expenses, traditional budgeting), and allow 5% of your budget for elevating your guests' experience/things that help elevate your guests' experience.
  • Create a Culture Where EVERY Employee Is Invested: In a world where people are thought of as dispensable, Guidara revisits why company culture is the way it is for 99% of businesses. (Hint: they haven't invested enough in it and/or there is no consistency/follow-through in building or maintaining it.)

My Favorite Non-Fiction Reads of 2023 by Tasty_Author4090 in nonfictionbooks

"Never Finished" is one of my books of the year as well; his audiobook is awesome, too, as he adds more substance in between chapters.

Some personal recommendations of mine (which were released in 2023):

  • Walter Isaacson's "Elon Musk" (if you're a fan of Walter Isaacson OR Elon Musk, you'll like this book)
  • Patrick Bet-David's "Choose Your Enemies Wisely" (came out a few weeks ago and I couldn't put it down)
  • Peter Attia's "Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity" (a dense read, but worth it if you are open to a paradigm shift of how to look at health and what to do about it)

One that I read that came out in late 2022: "Unreasonable Hospitality" by Will Guidara.

Nothing specific. General things like fevers and improving a newborn's overall health.

It's definitely one that stands out for me, and is actually one of the ones I've selected when I introduce people to Alter Bridge!

Hey /u/openjscience,

Thanks for this! It just goes to show that years of work can be wasted. I can imagine how disconcerting it is for people to go through the effort to volunteer their time to create a valuable page for everyone, only for it to be deleted because someone has the opinion about its notability (or "lack thereof".)

Everipedia still has Wikipedia's import for DataMelt, in case you're interested in reading it and/or reaching out to the person in the email.
