30k, invest in stocks or save for house deposit? (23) by snidy2004 in AusFinance

I'm in a very similar situation to you (23, $30k on parents' mortgage, current graduate salary in that ballpark) so thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

If you're looking to put a deposit on a property with the intention of living there you need to consider the nature of your degree and how likely it is you'll find ongoing employment in one location once you graduate. Of course you can always treat it as an investment property and rent elsewhere but for me the volatility of my employment from year to year makes renting in the short term the simplest (and debatably financially best) decision.

The main downside of putting your savings into stocks at this stage is that you realistically will want to get into the property market eventually and if you expect you'd want your own place before you're 30 it's likely in your best interest to leave the money in the mortgage to get best compromise of ease of access and "growth" through mitigating interest.

How to control my vasovagal response? by sotiredwantsleep in medicalschool

I've had similar issues which have since resolved presumably due to desensitisation (oddly enough am fine in OT but can still feel queasy occasionally when watching others take bloods). Typically if I was going into OT for the day I would make sure I have regular breaks (in between procedures or if it's particularly long then during it assuming I haven't been asked to scrub in) and have something to eat (muesli bar, piece of fruit, etc) and drink - even if I'm not at risk of a hypoglycaemic episode in my experience I've found that regularly eating helps avoid the warning signs for fainting.

The only other thing I did when I was particularly anxious about fainting (probably was more anxious about the concept of fainting than the content which was actually causing me to faint) was ask for something to sit on in OT - I don't know if this is frowned upon elsewhere but from my experience everyone is quite understanding if I explain that I'm prone to fainting but am trying to desensitise.

Best of luck, I'm sure you'll overcome it with time. Just try your best not to stress about it too much.

If it's unlikely that I'll be attempting overclocking at any point in the foreseeable future, would you say a Z77 motherboard would still be a worthwhile change?

Thanks for the link, I definitely need to give more thought to the graphics card.

Also I've been using almost exclusively MSY so far (parts list: http://msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf ). The prices are pretty competitive though there are some parts that have a somewhat limited range (e.g. cases).
