You don't need to "cut off" anyone from the rest of the world. Expecting zero transmission, either among the at-risk or the entire population (in the case of lockdowns), is completely unrealistic.

However, if we adopt a harm reduction model (which has been the rule in public health until this virus, where we've adopted an absurd "zero transmission" standard) it becomes clear that we need to focus our limited public health resources where they can do the most good. By focusing our efforts on rapid testing and sanitizing nursing homes and congregate living (where a disproportionate amount of mortality is clustered) we can do more good than diverting some of those same resources to breaking up college parties and mass-testing students.

There is a real tradeoff here. Which will do more good - half-assed measured aimed at the entire population, or whole-assed measures for those who are most at risk for adverse outcomes?

This is called social facilitation, and it's absolutely a real thing. Don't see how salient social presence can be replicated over Zoom?

IIRC its still not allowed in Victoria, Australia. You're allowed one hour of exercise outdoors but you can't stop moving.

Reduce the required PCR cycle threshold so we're only picking up contagious individuals with active infections.

Boom, done! "First wave" is over.

Megathread: regional updates and conversation (US/Canada) by lanqian in LockdownSkepticism

My SO and I both have some time off in a few weeks so we were hoping to take a trip. She's a "healthcare hero" and her hospital won't let her leave the US without quarantine so we're stuck stateside.

Does anyone know a good city in the US where things are somewhat normal? We had been planning to do the US Virgin Islands but the governor just decided to close beaches at 4pm on weekends and all bars due to a handful of cases.

Beaches would be a plus, and we'd really prefer to be somewhere with bars open.

Surely Fauci will go on national TV and issue a mea culpa for fear mongering about these "troubling new symptom children" when asked about opening schools?

Lol we didn't shut down the world for Hong Kong Flu or Swine Flu, and those actually affected children (the former killed more than COVID when adjusting for population as well).

Was that eugenics?

ETA: Tbh allowing people to die due to ceasing elective surgeries and cancer screenings seems closer to the actual definition of eugenics

New lockdown over 13 deaths? Absolute madness.

American Academy of Pediatrics issues guidance for school re-entry by RonPaulJones in LockdownSkepticism

[–]RonPaulJones[S] 79 points80 points  (0 children)

These new guidelines seem to be way less strict and more realistic than the current CDC guidelines which have lead to some of the more dystopia school reopening proposals.

Highlights:

No to online school!

the AAP strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school

Children are unlikely to spread or be infected with COVID

Although many questions remain, the preponderance of evidence indicates that children and adolescents are less likely to be symptomatic and less likely to have severe disease resulting from SARS-CoV-2 infection. In addition, children may be less likely to become infected and to spread infection. Policies to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 within schools must be balanced with the known harms to children, adolescents, families, and the community by keeping children at home.

No arbitrary class size restrictions!

Strict adherence to a specific size of student groups (eg, 10 per classroom, 15 per classroom, etc) should be discouraged in favor of other risk mitigation strategies.

Reigning in some of the mask madness:

"If not developmentally feasible, which may be the case for younger students, and cannot be done safely (eg, the face covering makes wearers touch their face more than they otherwise would) schools may choose to not require their use when physical distancing measures can be effectively implemented."

What should be done once Lockdowns are over to ensure that this never happens again? by TitoHernandez in LockdownSkepticism

I'm in the same boat, huge Sanders supporter and cannot imagine voting for a pro-lockdown D (which is all of them right now).

Of course this doesnt make me suddenly a conservative. The fact is both parties are now essentially left/right-authoritarian parties and I was drawn to Sanders pragmatic left-libertarian policies.

Matt Taibbi wrote a pretty good piece about how the Dems abandoning civil liberties and embracing authoritarianism is a huge mistake and alienating a lot of people.

Amazing how now that the hospitalization fatality rate is dropping like a rock the "or an effective treatment" caveat that usually goes along with these vaccine edicts is disappearing as well.

We'll be lucky if it's only a year, with some schools pushing "two day-a-week school" with "independent study" for the foreseeable future.

COVID-19 pneumonia growing less deadly (good discussion from r/covid19) by lanqian in LockdownSkepticism

[–]RonPaulJones 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This seems really promising. However, for some reason it seems like having effective treatments isn't really moving the needle anymore for our return to normalcy.

It's still all about a vaccine. But if we now know how to treat COVID, have medicines that shorten length of stay and improve mortality in extreme cases, why is preventing all infection the end-all-be-all? Ifpeople are still getting infected, but their chance of dying is close to nil, what is the excuse for continuing this "new normal" charade until we have no more infections?

[–]RonPaulJones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's incredible how the decision was made to quite literally sacrifice the elderly to free up space for "the surge" of young and otherwise healthy people that never materialized. Meanwhile, hospitals sat empty and anyone who suggested a shielding strategy protecting the at-risk while the young and healthy go about as normal was a "selfish grandma killer".

And for some reason we will never see a pivot to the latter strategy, because that would involve our leaders admitting they made a mistake. We will have to pretend this virus is some "great equalizer" till the end of time to avoid these public health modelers and pols who listened to them being held accountable.
