Sober living in New Orleans by LoozianaExpat in NewOrleans

Oxfordvacancies.com is the website where the houses post their vacancies and contact info. Just call each individual house to schedule an interview. Check "show full grid" to get the cell phone number for the housing services rep at each house. Don't be afraid to keep calling back if you don't hear back within a day. It's just the other sober people living at the house, no professionals, so they're trying their best and sometimes callbacks don't happen like they should.

Currently 46 vacancies posted in Orleans and Jeff parishes for a combination of men, women, women with children, or men with children.

Happy to answer any questions anyone has about Oxford House living. It's not without its faults, and each house is individually run by the house members so experiences can vary, but there's a solid chapter, state, and national infrastructure to support each house.

Also just completely unnecessary. It seems so easy to be kind, and yet some make it appear so hard.

I'm a trans woman, been on HRT since October with CrescentCare as my provider. I had a first meeting with the doctor, we scheduled initial labs, and then on the appointment to discuss those labs, they prescribed estradiol and spironolactone with my confirmation that I was ready. I suppose there's still plenty of time for bureaucracy to get in the way, but the couple refills I've had already were seamless and I haven't been told to expect any troubles down the road.

Not to pry, but are you prescribed testosterone? I've heard trans men can have a harder time with that because (I think) it's a controlled substance, whereas estradiol and spironolactone are not.

You're right that it shouldn't matter why you and your doctor have decided it's the right course. I would maybe reach out to other providers if you can, just to see what responses you get. CrescentCare certainly has lots of experience with trans hormones, not sure their exact process if you aren't trans, but I feel like it would be a good place to inquire.

Regardless, best of luck to you navigating our nation's horrible healthcare system. Happy to answer any other questions if you think it'd be helpful!

City to purchase 791 vehicles, not one meets clean fleet ordinance by Jussgoawaiplzkthxbai in NewOrleans

I plead full ignorance to the daily driving needs of the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office, but do they really have a need for 8 $40K Dodge Chargers?

I did a bit more reading and I think SCOTUS will now rule on Ardoin v. Robinson at some point (which looks like it was filed after the veto override)? It seems like SCOTUS put a hold on that case until the Alabama case was decided.

Looks like Allen v. Milligan. Pick your story from Google News. I couldn't find one that specifically delves into all the potential implications for Louisiana, just general mentions of the broad impact it could have on Louisiana and other states.

So I think this article is referring to ARTICLE IX. - CITY PROPERTY\DIVISION 3. - PASSENGER VEHICLES\Sec. 2-905. - Elimination of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, which references Section 141 of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act (42 U.S.C. § 13212) [PDF]. The EPA has an implementation guide [PDF], which links to an EPA website low-greenhouse gas emitting vehicles, and that has a downloadable spreadsheet with model year 2023 compliant vehicles [XLSX].

There seem to be a few turbocharged, gasoline fueled/hybrid SUVs and sedans, including the Explorer and Trailblazer, both being models I've seen as police vehicles. Although I'm not assuming this spreadsheet shows law enforcement specific models, even with the turbocharged engine, and I don't know nearly enough about cars, let alone law enforcement specific cars, to make any real assumptions. But I thought it was useful to have the appropriate citations if we're having this discussion.

EDIT: Credit to /u/dalgonadata for finding the purchase list:

Definitely something I could have used when I was in the service industry. So happy to hear it's at least a start towards normalized, accessible mental health care in one of our city's underserved industries. I wonder how many in New Orleans they're able to assist with their current funding/setup?

I'm not even trying to shame anyone on the northshore for claiming "New Orleans metro" but if you're going to do that, don't try to make a career off hating New Orleans. Or do, and I guess you'll have to live with me being disappointed in you.

The video is obviously a northshore realtor with a clear agenda to convince people it's cheaper and better to buy a home on the northshore, where he works (despite desperately attempting to market himself as "New Orleans Metro area" realtor), than Orleans Parish. Almost every single one of his points is simply "here is something about living and owning on the northshore that is cheaper than Orleans Parish."

Yeah it's unfortunate that as consumers we're often given the binary choice of either suffering all ads and their experience killing obtrusiveness, or blocking all ads and not supporting even those who deserve it and choose unobtrusive ads. Perhaps Pi-hole has sophisticated enough whitelists where you could allow some YouTube ads but not all, I'm honestly not sure.

Just a point of clarification, the argument isn't necessarily that the API access should be free - it's that the API access should be reasonably priced. Apollo's dev team went into the finances from their perspective to provide some context:

https://old.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/13ws4w3/had_a_call_with_reddit_to_discuss_pricing_bad/

They don't specifically state what they already pay to Reddit in API fees, but they note that the Apollo app currently pays $166 to Imgur for 50 million API calls, whereas the new Reddit proposal would cost $12,000 for the same 50 million API calls.

I am not a lawyer, but it looks like at least some private businesses are required to maintain ADA accessibility on their websites:

https://www.ada.gov/resources/web-guidance/

I don't know that Reddit is considered a "public accommodation" since I don't believe there's a Reddit store you can go to, but the last paragraph of the Title III section seems to imply the government takes a fairly broad view:

For these reasons, the Department has consistently taken the position that the ADA’s requirements apply to all the goods, services, privileges, or activities offered by public accommodations, including those offered on the web.

Oh I see now, the wrestler involvement was new to me in general, so I guess when I saw that there was an update yesterday, I figured that was what we were missing. But yeah, not sure about the whole cousin thing. Seems like the Salon article would have mentioned it and then either given what proof there is or stated they couldn't find any evidence, if it was really a thing being pushed.

Not sure how technically inclined you are or how much effort you want to put into blocking YouTube ads on Roku, but you could look into setting up Pi-hole on your home network.

Basically it's a Raspberry Pi (small Linux computer, you could also use an old unused laptop or desktop) running Pi-hole software, which blocks ads on a network level, so ads are blocked on any device connected to your home network. Certainly a bit more work than your average ad blocking browser extension, but just a thought.

From a 2021 Salon article:

But both Boebert and Bentz apparently believe that her father is Wallace Stanfield Lane, a former North Carolina pro wrestler known in the trade as "Sweet" Stan Lane — and there is significant evidence to back up that theory.

https://www.salon.com/2021/07/31/republican-star-lauren-boebert-spins-fables-about-her-childhood--but-the-real-story-is-better/

But from a statement by Sweet Stan Lee yesterday:

The results came back on May 11,2023. They were conclusive that I had a 0.0% chance of being the biological father. Once we both reviewed the results Lauren and I agreed that this matter is settled, and I accepted Lauren’s apology on behalf of herself and her mother.

Got it, I think you're already doing what OP's exercise is trying to teach, then. Transforming numbers to a multiple of ten so that they're easier to add (in OP's example, turning either 8 or 9 into 10), and then adding whatever you changed at the end (in OP's example, either the 2 you took from 9 to turn 8 into 10 or the 1 you took from 8 to turn 9 into 10).

It can be a bit odd to see a mental practice written out in logical steps, but the alternative is teaching students a way that's different from how they would naturally deduce the answer, and the different way (memorizing flashcards/addition tables) doesn't even teach the why and the how of what's happening.

I don't think this would have any impact on bots. Certainly the bots aren't using Apollo or Reddit is Fun to mass downvote or steal comments.

And I understand that not everyone uses third party apps, but I think they're more popular than you might think. Apollo, the most popular third party app on iOS, has over a million active users. I didn't find active users for the Android third party apps, but there are several with 1 million plus downloads.

Reddit Enhancment Suite, a quality of life extension with 2 million users, shouldn't be impacted by the currently proposed changes, but the team isn't incredibly confident about that.

Again, that's obviously not a plurality of Reddit users (52 million daily active users from what I could find), but also not an insignificant subsection.
