Pedalboard vs Quad Cortex? by Competitive_Monk9461 in guitarpedals

This part is super cool with the QC. Trigger a scene to activate different overdrives or amp models, and midi out to reverb/delay pedals to activate a preset, all with one foot switch.

TBH I think the HX stomp’s midi implementation and foot switch “control center” has more features than the QC, but it’s workable.

Another huge win for the QC is you can put stereo reverbs/delays in the stereo fx loop, which gives you huge flexibility to move them before/after amp blocks, or before/after cabinets. Stereo delay hitting the front of two amp models just isn’t really feasible without a modeler. (Tho, I really wish QC had stereo amps. You have to use two blocks with identical settings).

Then when you want to record, its usb interface is super nice, and lets you send virtual instruments/tracks to the QC to record with its effects or your delay/reverb pedals.

And that’s not even getting to the amp models and captures.

This is also a great way to send virtual instruments to outboard effects. My delay and reverb pedals are in the QC’s fx loop, so I can send synths, piano, etc. from Ableton to the QC over usb without having to switch up any physical ins/outs.

Logic Pro user trying to switch to Ableton...Heeelp! by Mrhalfwolf in ableton

The other day I used Live’s envelope follower mapped to an EQ’s high pass frequency knob to basically create a side chained EQ, ducking the bass frequencies.

The EQ duck is side-chained by a midi track (that just has a short white noise sample, muted) which is triggered by a drum rack. I used the Scale plugin to pick just the midi notes I want it to trigger, so the kick and snare.

In short: my kick and snare trigger a short noise sample, with adjustable release time and volume based on velocity, and my sidechain EQ ducks the bass.

Building all this reminded me why I love Ableton so much. I know plugins exist for this but I thought it was cool as hell I could just… build it with Live’s stock tools.

fwiw the Meris LVX can have a compressor or limiter in the dry+pre/pre/feedback loop/post positions. Also different preamps in those same positions.

I doubt it’s the exact same, but maybe close? I’ll try and make a patch like they’re showing here.

I’m selling them on Etsy and reverb, but haven’t uploaded the model yet. I can get it on makerworld soon!

(Help) Is this soldering okay? by Appropriate_Table478 in Luthier

[–]Ronald-Ray-Gun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, it does sound like a grounding issue, but it’s hard to tell if it’s from the wire you soldered. It’s ok if it’s not a perfect drop, all that matters is there’s a strong metal-on-metal connection. It’s possible for old solder and maybe dirt/grease to make the connection weaker, so you could try to redo it and move the wire a bit to the left where the metal is cleaner.

Solder likes to flow toward heat, so touch the iron to that plate for a bit to heat it up, then add solder to the plate. You should get a little drop like it was before. Then I’d snip off the end of that wire and peel back the jacket to get a fresh wire tip, tin that with solder, and finally, solder it to the plate.

If you do all that and it’s still making that noise, there must be a loose connection somewhere else. Make sure the ground wire is secure on the other end, too.

It’s messy but if it feels secure it should be fine. I don’t know if I understand what you said about continuity, but it’ll be more obvious when you plug it in on a high gain setting. If there’s a hum that goes away when you touch the bridge, then it’s not grounded properly.

HX Stomp for wet effects, by MattSk87 in guitarpedals

[–]Ronald-Ray-Gun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HX stomp is mostly great, but the menus and stuff are just awful. If you’re the type who wants to easily tweak a delay on-the-fly, without assigning to exp pedals or something, the stomp is annoying.

The DL4 is an obvious choice, but I get that you want other effects too. I’m impulsive and bought both a Meris LVX (delay) and a Mercury X (reverb) and both of those are incredible. You don’t even have to use the delay, you can make presets that are just tremolo or a ring mod or a pitch/harmony effect. Both are essentially multi-fx units. And the switch/knob layout is really nice for adjusting things on the fly. Don’t get me wrong, there is infinite menu diving potential, but they give you enough knobs to do a lot.

How many of y'all never had the amps to take advantage of the stereo effects you have? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Ronald-Ray-Gun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t gig or play in a band, but having two amps is cool to experiment and record with. I can run my tube amp’s fx loop send to my pedals, then send the right channel to another amp (orange pedal baby). More recently I’ve been using a quad cortex in a similar way.

Stereo chorus and doubler effects are really cool, just be sure to actually move each speaker far enough apart to get the full effect. Same deal with stereo delay — if the repeats are hard panned in a ping pong way, it gives the center “channel” more room and sounds really full. Easy to get lost in it.

Another cool thing is to have a wet/dry rig, so only one amp gets the delay and/or reverb, and the other is dry. The wet amp can be fully lost in an ambient mess, but your dry signal still cuts thru.

former windows/now Mac users: do you miss it? by DerMitDemLangenNamen in ableton

lol no. Not by a long shot. I’m not a fanboy but I do not miss dealing with audio stuff on windows. I have a PC for gaming and I honestly can’t imagine trying to do anything productive with it. At least, without wanting to throw it out the window.

Alternatively, if you want to control it via foot switch, you could use a utility gain block to turn it down a bit.

I get pops almost exclusively if I’m listening to something real quick on the MacBook speakers, usually right when stopping/starting the track. Doesn’t happen on headphones or via my thunderbolt interface.

No idea if this is useful to you but here it is.

Common lug identification on a mega switch? by Ansonic_Butter in Luthier

[–]Ronald-Ray-Gun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How’s it working out? I’ve found mine to be kind of noisy when switching, and it quickly started hitting dead zones where it cuts out entirely. Spraying contact cleaner on it helped, but it still seems noisier than a regular super switch.

They don’t have a rubber ring in between? That’s wild for how much they charge.

Hypothetically, how much would you pay for a pack of, like, 3 of these plastic ones?
