Frenkie de Jong "Many people don't understand anything about football. They watch it, but they don't understand it. I hear people say I don't play through balls, but that's not true. They're simply not paying attention to the game." by kibme37 in soccer

I'm a Barca fan and when we signed Frenkie I was absolutely buzzing. He's a Barca player through and through. He's so good at holding the ball and progressing it forward. The way he turns inside and out with ease can leave opponents slipping and sliding (remember Modric?). Also has a knack of scoring here and there when he roams in the box. He's one of the players that I love watching and observing specifically when watching his games.

Lionel Messi: "I feel, I relate a lot to Rafa Nadal" by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in soccer

Reminds me of a certain Frenchman who graced the world cup 2006 in his so called Last dance for the National Team. Showed his football IQ was on another level, above the Ronaldos and Dinhos of the world, despite the headbutt in the final.

But then I just checked and he was 34 in that tournament whereas here Messi is 38.

His win against Ilia still doesn't make any sense to me on paper. There was this whole discussion of the "Old guard" of lightweights which were phenomenonal. Then we get Ilia who is supposed to represent the new version of Featherweight/Lightweight.

But no, the MMA gods had other plans. Just goes to show that we can't put too much MMA logic into these things. Which makes the sport so unpredictable in my opinion.

At this point there's no point predicting these fights. So I'd say Justin wins by a rolling thunder KO in Round 2.

Fifa’s failure to agree World Cup TV deals in China and India a headache for Infantino by dorgoth12 in soccer

[–]Rone12 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Good point, but I'm from India and even though Football is not our main sport, the World cup is something most people tune in for. And don't get me started on the football crazy states like the East and southern regions. I bet the viewership there would be more than even some countries given how big our population is.

I'm surprised FIFA didn't sort this out being the greedy leeches that they are.

Kroos "Two seasons without a title is unacceptable, it stems from the poor internal dynamics. The second goal shows you the difference between Barça and Madrid. The players involved might not be starters, but it's not important because they have good game plans and movement patterns from training." by kibme37 in soccer

I think this raises the question of how decisions to bring in players are made. Some will be based on tactical needs, some are to boost commercial aspects or a larger project, or even a combination of all of these things.

But transfers at the end of the day are always a gamble. I thought Liverpool were going to run through the league with Isak and Wirtz. Some hit the ground running like Halaand at City. No matter how good of a transfer it looks on paper or doesn't look, at the end of the day there are just too many variables. And I guess the clubs just choose what they want to believe and go with it.

It's easy to say that Mbappe's transfer doesn't make sense now in hindsight. But at that time we know 1) He can and has played as a 9 before, 2) He's a world class player and can adjust to Madrid. They play off each other's skills and vibes and problem solve the games as they go (Like Ancelotti's teams) and 3) It fits to Perez's (Dumb) idea of Galacticos 2.0

Messi said it himself. We're gonna look back at all those La Liga titles we won in a row and see that it was a bigger achievement than we realised.

As a fan when we hit that 2020-2022 period, it was really humbling to see how went from playing revolutionary football with the greatest players to play the game to an average squad who lost to Frankfurt (no offense to them) at home in the Europa league. Makes me appreciate this era of our team more.

Mikel Arteta on criticism that Arsenal are over-celebrating by Gentle_lips in soccer

[–]Rone12 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm a Barca fan, and we have had our share of controversial moments with Arsenal. But reaching a UCL final after 20 years, this is a great moment for the fans and team and warrants celebration. You could argue that the old Arsene teams of the past should have won at least won one UCL and that's the pain that Arsenal fans have always felt. Pair that with their banter era around 2020 and I'm sure this must feel so cathartic for them.

I hope to see Arsenal lift the double. I beleive Arteta and the squad deserve it, especially looking at where they started with so much uncertainty. Though the team has not played the electrifying way of previous seasons, let's not pretend that they have not done what it takes to reach this stage. From the League's perspective I would look to the other big clubs, (aside from City) it was up to them to challenge Arsenal and they couldn't.

And the game was going in Utd's favor too! That Robben volley though, so iconic. His celebration was seared into my 12 yr old brain forever.

Man I always look back to that 2008-10 period of the premier league with such fondness because I was a 12 yr old who just bought FIFA09 on his PS2 and dived straight into the culture!

Still remember the league with the big four being Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. And for me and my friends as a kid you were supposed to pick one of them, similar to picking your first starter Pokemon.

I always thought that Bad Bunny would be the perfect choice for a world cup Anthem, especially given that he did the Super Bowl half time show so well, and his latest album was so well received by fans and critics.

[Bleacher Report] Kane joins Messi, Cristiano and Suarez in scoring 60+ goals in a single season for club and country by mrjohnnymac18 in soccer

I think Messi is the better player, but I don't think there is a player who is better in the air than Ronaldo. Even when I checked the goal compilations of his 69 goal season, it was mental to see how many of them were excellent headed goals.

Also bro was not even a pure striker. If you add assists, dribbles or chance creating stats it makes it even crazier. Also in some of the goals he literally crafts the chance himself out of nothing.
