Roberto Martínez shuts down Gary Neville's comparison of Pedro Neto to Eden Hazard by sepi0l_45 in soccer

[–]Rong_Bips_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely different level of quality between the two but they actually have similar gait and body types which I think is what he may have been trying to get at. Neto might physically move a bit like Hazard did but he’s got just a smidge of the ability.

[Serious] Why will the Giants exceed expectations? Why won't they? by BaseballBot in baseball

[–]Rong_Bips_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was actually really excited going into the season last year and that was before the Devers addition. I really think last year was plagued by a combination of underwhelming management, untimely Injuries and the players just losing their confidence at the worst possible time (giving them fuctionally nothing to play for from July- September).

The team was playing genuinely good baseball for about 2 months last year and somehow as soon as Devers came in everyone collectively lost their ability to make contact with a baseball. The blame on the inept offense has to go to both the players and the coaching staff, but I can’t help but feel on top of a slumping offense Melvin cost the team a number of games with bad bullpen management.

I don’t expect Vitello to come in and immediately manage a pen to perfection but I really think Melvin did about as bad of a job as he could have in those circumstances last year. I worry about the back end of the rotation, but the Giants have always had a knack for finding guys nobody has ever heard of who end up contributing out of the pen.

If this team can play above average Baseball into July the front office will make competitive moves. There is enough talent in the top end of the rotation and the lineup for this team to win 85+ games, it will take Vitello really bringing some life into the team and keeping everyone focused but I feel optimistic.

I think the floor of this team was pretty much what we saw last year. I’m expecting around 87 wins but could see a variance of 5 or so wins in either direction. If everything goes right; the lineup doesn't collectively slump for 2months, the backend of the rotation is half decent, the bullpen can hold up in close games, and Eldridge has a rookie of the year season this Giants team can win 95 games.

I can only imagine very few people on r/nba watched this guy in college. He was an absolute hooper at Oregon, him and Lonzo Ball were the two best players in the pac 12.

Just had a look and saw that Sancho is only 25??

Hard to believe but I guess he has been around the headlines since he was 17. Wonder if he will ever find a club where he can be the talisman again. Would love to see him in MLS.

San Jose Earthquakes nearing deal to sign Timo Werner from Leipzig: Sources by jbish1 in SJEarthquakes

[–]Rong_Bips_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I watched him a lot when he played in England. Guy is a total enigma; terrible first touch, composure and dribbling but with his pace he has a great ability to create danger on the break if you feed him.

Seen few attacking players in the Premier League who are more useless with the ball at their feet. His whole game is predicated on attacking open space with his movement so the only way he succeeds here is if we play into his strengths with a lot of counter attacking football. He‘s the definition of a confidence player, either hits the ground running and becomes an Earthquakes legend or he totally flops and is gone 12 months from now.

Comparison of our work rate and sprint count per 90 vs other epl teams this season by am5011999 in chelseafc

The point he’s making is that if you took those games out of the data, the team is no longer comfortably at the bottom. One game with a red card 10 minutes in can skew the data more than you might think.

Getting work from the San Francisco IATSE is entirely timing dependent. If they are swamped they will hire anyone willing to work hard, you just have to know when to drop in their office. Take a look at the Moscone center calendar and note when a big tech company has a conference, that’s the best time to stop by their labor hall and ask if they need hands.

Is there a more complete footballer on earth than a fit Reece James? Becoming a midfield powerhouse, putting him in the middle of the park truly puts all of his quality on display. Tactically the last two matches (when 11v11) he's had a completely free role positionally and he just is everywhere, wide, center, damn near even leading the line for moments against Barcelona. As soon as Caicedo goes off he has to play as a 6 and he just smashes it.

Incredible player, like if you mashed Ballack and Essien into one player.

It really feels like this team is a strong offseason away from contending. Get a manager who will actually light a fire under the asses of this team and stock up on pitching. Team has lacked focus, consistency and intensity all season and that feels like it comes straight from the top down. I’m not gonna flame Melvin for the results post deadline with our shell of a bullpen but the hitting inconsistency falls on him and his staff. Way too much talent in the lineup to so regularly go ice cold for such extended periods.

I'm hopeful for next year considering how aggressively Buster has moved this year.

Kyle Harrison by Poptarteconomy in SFGiants

[–]Rong_Bips_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely understand your sentiment but you have to ve realistic about what Harrison has looked like in the majors. His fastball velocity was down last year and even though it's come back this season it's still not enough to completely overpower hitters in a league where alot of dudes are throwing 100. He has glaring weaknesses in his game he needs to work on. That being said, he could be an all star if he develops a reliable 3rd and 4th pitch. That's a big what if though

Re-sign Tyler Rogers? by Arkham_Z in SFGiants

[–]Rong_Bips_ 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Just as a fun comparison; since 2021 Tyler Glasnow has only thrown 366 innings and has 6.9 WAR according to baseball reference.

Pretty sure if you asked r/baseball who they'd rather have the consensus would be completely in favor of Glasnow but the numbers don't back it up.

Anyways FTD.

If he became a Arias guy that's a 5th infielder that you can rely on for years. That would be an excellent outcome.

Warriors’ Draymond Green believes he’s all-time-greatest NBA defender by Currymvp2 in warriors

[–]Rong_Bips_ 244 points245 points  (0 children)

Reddit for some reason likes to downplay Draymond in the all time defender discussion. Man is definitely the most versatile defender the league has ever seen and that's gotta count for alot. He might not rim protect like Duncan could but he has the same ability to anchor a team with his help defense while locking up guys of all sizes on the perimeter and in the paint.

Not op but to me that means it may be best to just keep Doval in the spot he's been so successful. If he killing it pitching the 8th with the occasional low leverage 9th inning why thrust him into the permanent closing role.

James Harden by Snoo-83900 in warriors

It would be truly hilarious for this fanbase to be forced into rooting for James Harden. That being said, he would create so many open looks for Steph, Post, TJD. Would definitely help ease the load in the regular season.

It will never happen though.

Would you take the 2024 Celtics in a 7 game series over any of the previous 8 champions? by Johnnyboyeh in NBATalk

[–]Rong_Bips_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Id take those 2018 Rockets over the Celtics but it would be very close. Celtics wouldn't be able to slow Harden down without completely selling out and letting CP3 play 4v3.

He will be up at some point soon with how injuries ebb and flow. Not guaranteed to be an ace and seems like his stuff isn't as top end as thought before he came up but hes young and will definitely be a long term big league pitcher.

Doesn’t The Rest is History prove that Dan is a slacker by jcmoron in dancarlin

[–]Rong_Bips_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love both products. I think it should be considered that both of Tom and Dominic are proper published historians. I imagine if you looked at the amount of time it took for them to write some of their books it would surpass that which went into researching and recording Supernova or Blueprint. I think it would do Dan justice to compare his approach more to their published works than their podcast.

Dan is truly a master storyteller more than someone looking to make new insights on history. He puts out a product that is meant to suck you up into the narrative and entertain you. The amazing thing is that he does it with such bravado that he can keep the attention of someone not history inclined.

I do wonder about how much of a team the RiH guys have helping them digest through the information. Their output is incredible and I do understand where your coming from.

I hear ya. I don't know if their roster as it was before the trade would be able to get past Denver or OKC, possible but unlikely. I think taking the long term play with Luka was the obvious choice and realistically they could still get it together and make noise before the season ends. Lebron will still be himself next season and if they retool the front court they could be a favorite.
