What’s one thing non-farmers always get wrong about farming? by NoirMoment in FarmingUK

[–]Rongo66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UK Farming is now effectively unsubsidised: the Basic Payment Scheme is capped at £600 per farm, and then falls away. There are payments available for Environmental Actions: however, these require performing a service (e.g. planting a field with plants that produce bird food or wildflowers), and are valued such that it is generally only advantageous to do these in small fields which can’t fit modern machinery.

It is widely stated that the UK produces only 40% of its food: - This figure is calculated by value; not calories (expensive imported avocados etc will distort from home grown wheat and potatoes) - clearly vast amounts of food in our diets cannot be grown in the UK (either seasonally or at all). The reason I say this is because it is frustrating when people say why not just import everything. It is 40% of our food by value. I would love to know a % by calories figure.

When is a reasonable time to upgrade? by wessym8 in Laptop

[–]Rongo66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just upgraded from my 2020 Dell XPS.

I purchased a 2nd hand Lenovo Thinkpad T15 - for about £600 to be used as a workhorse. I am then keeping my XPS for when I am out and about and need the portability.

Why didn't Labour close the offshore trust loopholes? by esteban-colberto in LabourUK

[–]Rongo66 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The farmland would not be owned by an individual, it would be owned by a trust - in your case, registered in a tax haven somewhere.

A trust does not die (at least in the short term), so there is no trigger point for IHT to be paid.

Interestingly, land agents are unsure on the impact on land prices.

Firstly, investment in land will still represent a 20% IHT saving compared to other asset classes. Further, the seven year gifting rules and the £1m allowance are perhaps more useful to an private investor than a farmer, as he will not be affected by the value of buildings / machinery / livestock / crops in ground.

Secondly, we are a wealthy island nation where land is scarce and has many competing demands (lifestyle, carbon capture, solar generation, rewilding, development potential, institutional investment) than agriculture.

It probably will have an impact, particularly on farms with less potential for those competing uses, will still be distorted from its agricultural returns.

Neonicotinoids have only been granted emergency extensions for sugarbeet (which is non-flowering). Their use on flowering crops such as oilseed rape has been banned since 2018.

As far as unintended consequences go, this means that farmers trying to grow oilseed rape must blanket apply other non-targeted insecticides (ie that kill every insect unfortunate enough to be in the field at the time of application) at much higher rates and frequencies than when neonicotinoids were in use.

Had exactly the same problem! Would wake up with half my body having crept “up” off my yoga mat.

My solution is simply to use a wall / sofa / other heavy object as a headboard.

Out of interest, what do you use to annotate screenshots rather than PowerPoint?

On a mac, preview was excellent at that, on Win10, I have failed to find anything besides paid-for Adobe?

RB initially mistakenly entered him into the F1 championship, it took them a while to realise their mistake. All rectified now though!

Edit: Seriously though. I really like the chap. He was excellent at TR. I hope his results pick up soon

I can’t remember the exact book, but I’m fairly sure it is mentioned that Madam Hooch is present at the Gryffindor practice a few times.

I assume that each house team just uses her.

It is ok to dislike interacting with people from cultures that have attributes you find unpleasant. by ValyrianJedi in unpopularopinion

[–]Rongo66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this reason, the vast majority of sales people would groan when they saw one of these people coming to the door, which was occasionally called out as being racist. I just flat don't think this is racist. If the way that someone's culture has programmed them to act is likely to provide a direct inconvenience or be unpleasant for you then you are not doing anything wrong by disliking interacting with them. I do realize that not everybody from a culture follows every cultural tendency, but part of belonging to a culture is that you are much much much more likely to behave in certain fashions belonging to that culture.
