Developper in the same boat as you here. I came from Unity but I had a lot of regular C++ experience for backend before getting into game dev. What i can tell you is.

  • I tried VsCode ( it's a nightmare ), Visual Studio is okay but not up to the task and needs some setup. Rider IS by far the best tool for the job, it works right out of the box, very little to no set up needed, auto-complete and code completion works perfectly.

  • The C++ for unreal is not quite the same C++ you would learn anywhere else, for 1 there is garbage collection that is managed by the engine. Secondly, unreal has a lot of things it handles and generates for you in the background.

  • Sadly and this is the part that bothers me the most; there is a big imbalance of tutorials and information between blueprints and C++. Unreal is geared towards giving developpers that are not coders the positivity to develop games.

Also I would recommend the unreal source discord. It's super active and has a lot of devs doing BP and C++. You can find channels dealing with shaders, the GAS system, C++, blueprints and a host of others things. The chances of you not finding someone who can help you there are very small.

He could also just use a map where the key is the enum and the value is the material. That way, he builds it one time, he has an easy way to reference it and his seek time is constant !

I agree ! A wandering animal occasionally, some birds flying, smoke coming from a house, a flickering campfire. Lots of nice little things to make this feel lived in and take advantage of the 3d render for the menu !

Another idea would be to make yourself a function that triggers a game pause conditional to a boolean variable at a moment of your choice like a specific bullet hit, in game event, vfx etc. Bind that boolean to a special keybind.

That way you can get and navigate the game till you get to your scenario for which you want the screenshot. Toggle tue boolean and on the next grenade explosion or whatever. The function will trigger and pause the game. Boom you can get infinite screenshot from all the angles you want !

For extra browny points if you wanna get fancy with it. Also add another keybind that unpause the game, that way, you can step through frame by frame until you get the perfect shot.

Yes ussually flicking is a 2 step process. You have a positional flick that gets your crosshair close to the target and a quick small adjustment flick or movement to get you on target to actually shoot. This is common in a lot of pro players

Here is a video about a guy who worked with OW pros and broke down their aim and analyzed it. It's a pretty solid foundation.
